QUOTE (NorthSideSox72 @ Dec 5, 2013 -> 09:26 AM) The paranoia of some Sox fans astounds me. It's not paranoia. It's a lack of faith in an organization that has made many bad personnel decisions and has not been very successful recently. From Mackowiak in CF, to letting Ozzie keep Tank in the minors, Kotsay/Thome, Sale back to the bullpen, Santiago as closer, etc. Add to the fact that the owner forced this move upon the young, new GM and I don't like it. The Sox don't owe Konerko a damn thing, as his 16,000 square foot in Scottsdale can attest to. I don't buy that such loyalty moves help in free agency either, money talks, that's what matters. The Marlins treat their players like crap, yet they managed to sign the second best catcher available.

QUOTE (witesoxfan @ Dec 5, 2013 -> 09:10 AM) If the Sox had intentions of being seriously competitive, then yes, I'd agree. Right now, I ultimately believe this move to be meaningless. They know they are going to struggle/suck this year. If they win 80 games, people will be doing jumping jacks. This is a move to give a veteran player and a guy who has been with the organization almost 15 years a farewell, even if he does not believe it to be a farewell. I'm sure that the Sox will have an offer out to Buehrle too. If he were the 12th pitcher on the roster 3-4 years from now, would you be this upset? Is he taking away innings from a top young player that the Sox paid $68 million to? If so, I'll be just as upset. Yesterday they said that PK may face some tough right-handers in place of Abreu. How is he supposed to learn how to hit against a Verlander or Scherzer if he isn't allowed to face them?

QUOTE (scs787 @ Dec 5, 2013 -> 08:44 AM) Adam Dunn is the 2nd most important player in our franchise's future? Yup, just slightly behind Donnie Veal.

QUOTE (NorthSideSox72 @ Dec 5, 2013 -> 08:57 AM) I find it amazing there are people who actually think Konerko is going to take significant at bats away from Abreu. Or even more hilarious, that they think Konerko will take over starting time if Abreu struggles in April/May. There is no foundation for this in reality. We are not talking about a Brent Morel, or even a Brian Anderson here - this is a guy with a $63M contract. There is zero chance he sits in 2013. He'll play at least 130 game, probably more like 130-140, maybe even 150. Konerko's being on the team has zero effect on that - that is what would have happened either way. There are plenty of good reasons to dislike the PK14 signing. Irrational fears about benching a guy they just signed for $63M is not one of them. You have more faith in the White Sox organization and management than I do.

QUOTE (scs787 @ Dec 5, 2013 -> 08:37 AM) And how often do AL teams pinch hit? How many defensive replacements do you need? Leury or Danks can play CF while ADA shifts to LF in late game situations, where else do you need a defensive replacement? Do you want to fill the bench with LH hitters? Danks very well could be on the bench. I just don't think this is anything to be upset about, like another poster said, would you rather have PK or Angel Sanchez/Tyler Greene? Sanchez or Greene because they aren't taking away at-bats from the 2nd most important player in the franchise's future.

Does Abreu speak much English? Didn't he have a translator at the press conference? If they are gonna try to sell us on this "mentor" BS, I hope the two can at least communicate verbally.

QUOTE (Buehrle>Wood @ Dec 4, 2013 -> 08:03 PM) They don't really base it on how you finished last year. I think they more base it on how good you are supposed to be in the upcoming season, so the match ups are as relatively even as can be. Of course it's not a perfect science with a limited number of teams and leads to some routs. -

QUOTE (PlaySumFnJurny @ Dec 4, 2013 -> 04:44 PM) Greg Doyel is kind of a troll, but I've been wondering this same thing : http://www.cbssports.com/general/writer/gr...buckeyes-do-not 1. No one likes Urban Meyer 2. Ohio State got routed in a final several years ago (not that it should matter) 3. FSU has looked more impressive beating up their s***ty conference than OSU and their closer games against their s***ty conference. Either way, they both deserve the final if they win Saturday, then they can decide it on the field. -
QUOTE (Eminor3rd @ Dec 4, 2013 -> 02:07 PM) But at what cost? Nearly every team in the league has moved to utilizing the DH as a way to utilize depth effectively. The early innovators of this (A's, Rays) have seen great success, and there are so few monster DH bats left in the game. That roster spot is valuable -- especially if it allows some younger guys to get the PT they need. That's my other issue with this signing. The DH spot could be used to give guys like Avisail or Tank a day of rest, but keep their bats in the lineup. Now you can't.

The only way Paulie gets traded is if Paul Goldschmidt has a serious injury and the DBacks think they can stay in the hunt. He's not going anywhere else and the best 1b in baseball already plays there.

I thought loyalty to free agents was so important to players.?

QUOTE (Jenksismyb**** @ Dec 4, 2013 -> 10:53 AM) I half agree with you. Yes, expectations are out of whack. We can't really expect to be OSU over night. But I also don't think it's wrong to expect a bowl game every year, even if history says that's an unlikely goal. It's 6 f***ing wins. You're guaranteed 3 a year playing crap opponents. How hard is it really to go 3-6 the rest of the way? There really is no excuse for any Big Ten program not to be a bowl eligible team almost every year. I agree, but the last 20 years says differently. What blows my mind, is that from 2000-2009, Illinois made two bowl games, but both were BCS bowls. twice you managed to make the BCS, yet the other 8 seasons you couldn't even win 6 games once? You almost have to try to fail that bad. -
QUOTE (KyYlE23 @ Dec 4, 2013 -> 11:02 AM) Ok, deal Dunn, Gillaspie, and Beckham to Astros for.....stuff. Then sign Cano. Done. /Phil Rogers You forgot about Grandy. No Phil Rogers sentence is complete without a Granderson comment.

This move is all JR. Sucks to see Hahn have his hands tied by his owner already.

QUOTE (flavum @ Dec 4, 2013 -> 10:35 AM) You get 324 starts between 1B and DH. Maybe it can work with something like this... Abreu- 140 Dunn- 108 Konerko-76 Nahh...this is going to be bad. I just don't see Konerko coming back to only play half the season, nor do I see Robin benching Dunn. This is gonna be bad.

QUOTE (witesoxfan @ Dec 4, 2013 -> 09:17 AM) They weren't winning anything this year anyways. I just wanted him to retire because I think he's finished. With both Dunn and Konerko on the roster, they will take away at bats from Abreu. That could affect his development and adjustment period to MLB, which could hurt the teams future chances of winning.

First Tim Beckman, now Paul Konerko. I guess not hurting people's feelings is more important than winning.

QUOTE (Soxfest @ Dec 4, 2013 -> 01:12 AM) Maybe more to come. A source tells Jeff Passan of Yahoo Sports (on Twitter) that the Yankees not only believe they've got room for Ellsbury and Robinson Cano or Shin-Soo Choo, they still plan on signing at least one starting pitcher as well. Per Mlbrumors The A-Rod suspension is one of the best things to ever happen to them

Wait a second, Syracuse, Pitt, and Notre Dame are in the ACC? So confused. I used to get into this challenge, but once the Big Ten won it, I lost interest in the other games. -

QUOTE (StRoostifer @ Dec 3, 2013 -> 10:30 PM) Financially speaking it makes perfect sense. Not sure how Can would feel about hitting at Safeco. Would have think the power numbers take a hit. More importantly, what does Jay-Z think about the Pacific Northwest? -
Any Summer Heights High fans out there watching the new Ja'mie show? What a trainwreck, but I can't stop watching it.
