All New Soccer Thread ~ All Levels ~ All Leagues

QUOTE (zenryan @ Jul 17, 2013 -> 08:30 PM) July is really the perfect month as an American sports fan. Only MLB is going on and in July it can get a little boring at times. 2022 is a Winter Olympic year so a February WC might not be feasible. That's cause you live in Florida and it's always warm. In July I want to leave the house and do stuff, because in February it's goddamn cold. I guess I can watch at an outdoor beer garden in the summer though. -
You down wit OPP?

QUOTE (kitekrazy @ Jul 17, 2013 -> 12:43 PM) Some would argue that the Thome/Rowand trade set them back even more. I liked Ozzie's philosophy on that but they had the wrong people for it. The DH has always been a money pit for the Sox. I disagree, Thome was outstanding for the Sox, and Rowand starting declining soon after. And if you don't have the right players for your DH philosophy, then go with something else until you do, that was the mistake.

QUOTE (farmteam @ Jul 17, 2013 -> 04:02 PM) 2022 World Cup to be played in Winter? http://espnfc.com/news/story/_/id/1500789/...-winter?cc=5901 As an American, I think it would be awesome if it was played in February. It's cold outside here, down time in American sports, and I don't have a major rooting interest in European leagues. But FIFA can go f*** themselves, they know what they were getting into when they accepted Qatar's bribes bid. -
QUOTE (Balta1701 @ Jul 17, 2013 -> 03:54 PM) Of course..."this seemingly normal kid decided to plant a bomb in the middle of boston" really is a big part of the story. That's the main reason I flip flop on it. The intent is not to glamorize him, it's to wonder how a "teeny bopper" plants a bomb next to an 8-year old. But for a victim, they don't care about that, they just don't like to see him portrayed in that manner.

QUOTE (Alpha Dog @ Jul 17, 2013 -> 02:35 PM) With Manson they didn't go out of their way to make him look cool. The cover with the bomber asswipe looks like it could be TigerBeat. A difference between reporting and trying to find the 'softer sife of bombing'. Poor guy was failed by his family and lured into blowing up people for Islam. Almost as if they are trying to do PR for the guy. That is where your outrage, faux or otherwise, is coming from I've been going back and forth on the issue, but I think you hit it right on the head. That picture of him makes him look like a teeny bopper, it tries to make him look like you should like the kid. If they used a mugshot or maybe the picture from the security cameras, I think people would be much less upset.

QUOTE (southsider2k5 @ Jul 17, 2013 -> 02:29 PM) SportsCenter @SportsCenter 3m THIS JUST IN: Yankees 3B Alex Rodriguez said he expects to be in team's lineup Monday against Rangers. (via. @WFAN660) He's obviously not the same A-Roid he was before, but he will still be an improvement at 3B compared to what the Yankees have been throwing out there. David Adams (29 G) .536 OPS Jayson Nix (25 G) .607 OPS Kevin Youkilis (20 G) .648 OPS Chris Nelson (9 G) .521 OPS Luis Cruz (7 G) . 488 OPS Alberto Gonzalez (5 G) .394 OPS

QUOTE (LVSoxFan @ Jul 17, 2013 -> 11:07 AM) That's the way I heard it, it was basically the two sons fighting for Dad's (JR's) loyalty. KW won. It seemed like they were both jockeying for favor once we won the WS, each convinced that they were more responsible for it than the other. God I don't miss that soap opera. The franchise is still paying for Ozzie winning the Thome/Kotsay battle.

QUOTE (southsider2k5 @ Jul 17, 2013 -> 09:16 AM) The Red Wings model come to life. Hold on to your superstars, trade your 2nd and 3rd tier players for draft picks, and draft/develop well. With the current salary cap, that's the only way to do it. Hold on to your top talent, everyone else is expendable. It's why Pittsbugh has five guys talking up almost half their cap, it's why Anaheim gave Getzlaf & Perry so much cash.

QUOTE (flavum @ Jul 17, 2013 -> 09:27 AM) Usually the guy who deserves the MVP, gets it. In this case, he did not. I'm not mad about it, but there's right and wrong...and this was wrong. It's typical 2013 marketing, pre-packaged, FOX, MLB, east coast biased, crap. All the marketing BS would bother me more if Rivera wasn't such a good guy and actually seems to be geuiniely moved and appreciative of everything.

QUOTE (lostfan @ Jul 17, 2013 -> 09:10 AM) I don't see any reason why Ozzie wouldn't be cool with Robin, they always have been as far as I can tell And it's not like Robin took Ozzie's job away from him. Ozzie voluntarily went to Miami.

f*** nostalgia, Sale got hosed. Even national writers agree. I hope we see Rivera in the playoffs!
-
QUOTE (Buehrle>Wood @ Jul 16, 2013 -> 07:22 PM) Almost 100 million dollars down the drain for Cano there The Yankees might have worse luck than the Sox this year. (Yet they stayed above .500)
-
I don't think I realized Robin got an invite to coach too.
-
QUOTE (Tony82087 @ Jul 16, 2013 -> 05:35 PM) Carcillo to the Kings. Adios. Good, I hated rooting for him.
-
QUOTE (SoxPride18 @ Jul 16, 2013 -> 04:11 PM) Doesn't help that he just threw a no hitter too. His price is just as high I bet. And his arm fatigue is probably high too after 148 pitches. Talk about selling high!
-
QUOTE (flavum @ Jul 16, 2013 -> 04:01 PM) Why the hell would the starter only go one inning? Stupid. Because it's Leyland's own pitcher and he doesn't want to waste his arm in an exhibition.

QUOTE (Iwritecode @ Jul 16, 2013 -> 03:35 PM) Back sometime in the early 90's when they had the rock-&-jock softball games on MTV they had a ball that was painted to look like an 8-ball. If a hitter choose to have that ball pitched to him/her and hit a home-run, it would count for 8 runs. Frank did, and he hit an 8-run homerun. I don't know how far it went but when they retrieved the ball, it literally had a dent in it. I miss Rock N Jock sporting events. When they introduced the 50-point basket above the 25-point hoop, it blew my mind.

QUOTE (pettie4sox @ Jul 16, 2013 -> 02:33 PM) I totally feel you lostfan. As a black man I always feel like I'm trying to prove myself to white people. It's not something I have intent to do but it's more inherent. Example: While riding the train, I see some idiot rapping out loud during rush hour. I feel compelled to tell him to STFU. I feel like his actions reflect poorly on me that I have to defend myself from him. It's all too weird of a feeling. I'm sure if a white person saw some other white person acting like an idiot, it probably wouldn't even phase them. Another example is when I tell people my profession, they get big eyed, like it's impossible for a black man to possess an education. It's a shame really. From distancing ourselves from the idiots and still getting treated like *******, I grow weary of the s*** on a daily basis. White people will never understand that s***. I'm not trying to be racist but it's just true. I feel like most of them see things through rose colored glasses. Whenever I am on the 80 Irving Park bus just before a Cubs game, I am usually surrounded by ignorant obnoxious white suburban Cubs fans, and I must say I am always embarassed by their actions and hope that others don't stereotype me with them too. Not the same thing, but kind of I guess.

QUOTE (greg775 @ Jul 16, 2013 -> 02:15 PM) Great post. That's all I want. Fans to blame Robin some. I like Robin. I have no problem with him continuing as manager. But his staff has failed miserably this season. That's OK. I don't want him to be fired. I'm just laughing because if the former manager had orchestrated this first half ... wow, he'd be run out of town. This team looks like it is managed by Andy the Clown, God rest Andy's soul. Why wasn't the former manager run out of town in 2007? That team was hot garbage as well.

Boobs, HJs, and mindless ignorant racism? I may have to start watching this train wreck.

QUOTE (oldsox @ Jul 16, 2013 -> 07:05 AM) All the GM's are together in New York for most of this week and on expense accounts. Something is bound to happen. Steak Dinner....BOOM!

QUOTE (The Ginger Kid @ Jul 16, 2013 -> 12:43 PM) I had hoped it would make the trade market more volatile. Too bad. Cruz and/or Peralta getting suspended definitely could have helped the Sox trade potential. Even maybe A-Rod for that matter.
-
QUOTE (southsider2k5 @ Jul 16, 2013 -> 12:30 PM) Danny Knobler @DannyKnoblerCBS 31m Weiner says players in Biogenesis not bound by penalties in basic agreement. "In theory, they could be suspended for 5 games or 500." That makes sense. They haven't tested positive, they have just been ratted out by their drug dealer.

QUOTE (Eminor3rd @ Jul 16, 2013 -> 12:23 PM) How can you say that definitively? I'm not trying to challenge you, I just want to know what people are looking at when they are deciding that RV is the reason this team is losing. Because to me, it's because they suck at hitting and defense. Is RV not requiring them to practice hitting and defense? If that's the case, then sure, but otherwise, I think the players are just f***ing sucking. All his pitching change problems combined don't add up to be nearly the problem than the team offense right now. All the baserunning gaffes usually point to the manager a little bit IMO, but obviously he can't teach players to stop being dumb. It just seems like there is a lack of focus out there on defense and on the basepaths, and usually you look at the manager to wake his guys up. Of course there is only so much Robin can do, and there is very little he can do with the offense right now.
