Sox turn down trade offer for Alexei from Cardinals
LittleHurt05 replied to chisoxfan09's topic in Pale Hose Talk
I don't think the Sox would turn down this offer, and I don't think the Cardinals would make this offer. -
QUOTE (Noonskadoodle @ Jul 23, 2013 -> 03:18 PM) Dang Edwards who the Cubs acquired has thrown 160 innings & have given up 0 homers? Impressive. I wish he wasn't in the Cubs system now, because I really want to root for the kid after reading about him. 48th round pick from a real tiny town was spotted playing in a local adult bush league.

QUOTE (fathom @ Jul 23, 2013 -> 09:46 PM) Why did he pitch to Griffey Jr. in the play-in game if he was such a smart manager!! Griffey must be the all time leader of play-in game web gems.

QUOTE (Balta1701 @ Jul 23, 2013 -> 07:27 PM) If ARoid started juicing at 15-16 couldn't it have been the reason why he was a physical freak when he was 18 and drafted first? Very true. I guess we shouldn't assume anything.

QUOTE (Jake @ Jul 23, 2013 -> 06:26 PM) They're getting penalized too. The MiLB drug policy is notoriously harsh and there are many lowly MLBers and MiLB guys involved in this controversy. I guess that is true now, they did step up the MiLB policy before they could get the MLB union to agree on it. I feel like it makes more sense for those guys to do it, than some of these superstars. The difference between life in AA/AAA as opposed to MLB is huge, life-changing. Not sure when ARod started his juicing, but he was gonna be a hell of a player anyway, now he's just a moron.

Peavy to Boston, Avisail Garcia + 3 low lv specs to Sox

QUOTE (mike65 @ Jul 23, 2013 -> 05:40 PM) OK, guys, we have news or at least a rumor of news. On a Cardinals board (associated with the Post Dispatch), someone just posted that the WS want Adams, Freese, and Joe Kelly for Ramirez and Peavy. Supposedly, this was just mentioned on a Chicago sports talk radio station. The hang-up apparently is Freese, who the Cardinals don't want to trade. Take it for what it's worth. P.S. Supposedly, it is a FOX affiliated station. If Adams and Freese are gone, who plays third? -
It is the same thing in baseball. Only guys like Braun, ARod, Bonds are noticed. But a AAA pitcher who can add two mph to his fastball can suddenly make the majors. Same thing with a hitter who might need a tiny bit more pop in his bat. There are guys at those levels up to no good too, and they are taking away MLB jobs from clean players.

Peavy to Boston, Avisail Garcia + 3 low lv specs to Sox

Clay Buchholz now may not be back until September, which could get the Red Sox more interested in Peavy. -

QUOTE (Balta1701 @ Jul 23, 2013 -> 02:29 PM) and i'm sure you know you'd probably lose him to some team offering a 7 year deal. Ha, probably. And I would be fine with walking away from that (unless I were Arte Moreno). In this era, clean sluggers dont age very well, I'm sure guys with PED history will age even worse.

QUOTE (Balta1701 @ Jul 23, 2013 -> 02:14 PM) The real question is...if you're in the shoes of a GM...how much would you be willing to risk on that bet? It seems like the Yankees, for example, are going to be out >$100 million on it. The thing about the Yankees is they gave A-Rod a 10-year deal at age 31, the length killed them. Braun will be 30 at the start of 2014. If he were a free agent, I'd be willing to bet a good size 3-4 year deal on him, maybe 5. Anything past that would be too much of a gamble IMO.

QUOTE (greg775 @ Jul 23, 2013 -> 12:59 PM) No, regarding Peavy. I don't know if teams want to mess with having him on the team at all since he gets hurt so much and makes a lot of money. It might be easier to just pass on Peavy rather than have him get hurt and have to deal with all that. Peavy has been healthier than Garza recently, and the Rangers gave up a lot for him.

QUOTE (iamshack @ Jul 23, 2013 -> 01:41 PM) Are you assuming he's been on some form of PED's since he came into the league? I have no idea, it's hard to say. His positive test was in the 2011 NLDS, which was right after his MVP season. He didn't just come out of nowhere though, he was a high first round draft pick out of Miami. Unless he has been juicing the whole time, including his college days, I would think he has enough talent to keep hitting at a decent level.
-
QUOTE (kitekrazy @ Jul 23, 2013 -> 12:56 PM) His contract should be voided. If it were, there would be plenty of teams looking to sign him as a free agent. He may not be an MVP off of the juice, but I think he'd still be a pretty good hitter.
-
QUOTE (iamshack @ Jul 23, 2013 -> 11:13 AM) I'd be disappointed if they deal De Aza, unless they get something really nice for him...the guy seems to really be underappreciated here. Yeah I don't get it. I know he his a bit older, but with him being controlled for a few more years, isn't that the exact type of player the Sox should be looking for?

QUOTE (IowaSoxFan @ Jul 23, 2013 -> 10:37 AM) Hafner is likely DFA'ed to make room for Soriano, he will probably be their new DH. Hafner has been horrible for them. You are right, I hadn't really looked at Hafner's stats since his hot April. April: 1.104 OPS May: .584 OPS June: .578 OPS July: .470 OPS

After reading the last few paragraphs of this Jeff Passan article, I will change my opinion and say that Braun does owe Laurenzi an apology. It's one thing to use the loophole to your advantage, it's another to go this far with the blame game & accusations.
-
QUOTE (Jake @ Jul 23, 2013 -> 09:58 AM) Jesus, why not just trade for Dunn then? While 1b appears to be a more pressing need than an OF, they already have a lot of LHB. Cano, Ichiro, Gardner, Granderson will come back. Also Hafner/Overbay. That's like 5 lefty bats. With A-Rod's return on the fritz, Tex & Jeter hurt, I would think a right-handed hitter might be needed in that lineup. Just a guess.

QUOTE (Balta1701 @ Jul 23, 2013 -> 08:35 AM) I agree he gave Braun the opening. However, I refuse to acknowledge that the collector personally did anything wrong. Taking a sample home and storing it on a weekend was absolutely standard procedure in both internationally accepted and MLB approved tests. It was spelled out as an option for collectors to use. However, MLB's drug testing agreement said that it should only be used under special circumstances but did not spell out what those circumstances were. The collector followed the procedures as well as he could have. Storing the sample over the weekend was almost certainly standard procedure followed by everyone. It's normal in international testing. The collector did not do a darn thing wrong. I will give Ryan Braun's legal team credit for finding a loophole that even MLB did not realize they'd left in their agreement, and MLB deserves the blame for not clarifying the circumstances under which "weekend storage" could be used. But Braun went much farther than that in his statements, alleging he had found negative things about the past of the collector and that they had good reason to believe the sample was tampered with. Neither of those things were correct. They're so far incorrect that if Braun actually apologized to him for those statements, his apology would probably wind up evidence in a libel suit. Well it was not an international test, it was an MLB test. And while their rules were vague, you better be well versed in all potential outcomes as a course of your actions, because those technicialities are the name of the game. Sorry but I still don't see the collector as a victim in need of an apology. And what did people expect Braun to say? Millions of dollars are at stake, his livelihood is threatened (due to his own actions, yes), of course he is gonna pull out all the stops to get his name cleared. Most people would do the same.

QUOTE (JohnCangelosi @ Jul 23, 2013 -> 08:16 AM) The way the news is reporting it, it seems that he is accepting guilt for the 2011 season, and DID NOT test positive for anything the past 2 years. Can anyone confirm or deny this? Did he in fact test positive for something this year? There were no new reports of positive tests. I don't think he admitted to one specific violation. I just think with everything he has gotten into, he knows he is screwed and MLB can lay the hammer down on him eventually. Therefore he plea bargained, got a suspension when the Brewers sucked, he is battling thumb/neck injuries, and his contract is much cheaper.

QUOTE (Balta1701 @ Jul 23, 2013 -> 08:09 AM) So you're now alleging that he tampered with this sample also? Ah, that is what it sounded like. No way, Braun is guilty as can be. I am just saying that by taking the sample home, he gave Braun the opening he needed to void the test. I already found 3 FedEx offices within ten miles of Miller Park that are open very late on Saturday nights.
