The more and more I watch Taj, the more I want him traded. Asik's size is vital and he's been huge on defense today. Defense is playing well again. Heat only had 14 points that quarter.

I'm assuming they're having a hard time adjusting to Noah playing D...or something like that. Makes no sense, but the defense has been horrid these past two games.

QUOTE (ptatc @ Feb 24, 2011 -> 04:32 PM) Puljols is the better hitter. However, from the position stand point the better defense at a more important position would probably win out. I'm referring to the whole career not just as the players are today. As far as the WAR goes, I still think it's an invalid stat. It makes for good discussion and is probably the best attempt to compare players over different eras and comparing the value of pitchers and position players. However, as a way to compare position players to position players in the same timeframe, I'm not a big fan from a statistical point of view. Positioning is actually one of the things that WAR does the best, IMO. Its gray areas are defense and the concept of replacement value (not consistent in every system).

QUOTE (Brian @ Feb 24, 2011 -> 04:26 PM) Gerald Wallace is a sweet pickup for Portland. Wonder if the Bulls thought of that. What's the point? They'd have no where to play him. That's unless you want Deng at the 2.

QUOTE (ptatc @ Feb 24, 2011 -> 04:11 PM) Rodriguez is close enough that I'll take his offense with good to great defense SS or 3B as opposed to Puljols at 1B. A-Rod was once a great defender. He's pretty mediocre now. Pujols' defense hasn't regressed as fast since he's a 1B. Plus, WAR takes positioning into account and A-Rod has a a 1.5 win advantage every season from positioning alone. He had a 2 win advantage as a SS. Yet Pujols still has a higher WAR count in the past 10 seasons. I think that should say something about Albert's offensive and defensive abilities.

QUOTE (ptatc @ Feb 24, 2011 -> 03:59 PM) I would disagree with that. I would take Alex Rodriguez, KenGriffey Jr. and Barry Bonds before him and that's just position players. There are a number of pitchers i would probably put ahead of him as well. Depending on your definition of modern area Hank Aaron, Mickey Mantle and Roberto Clemente were all superior players compared to him. He's definitely been the best player in the past decade. http://www.fangraphs.com/leaders.aspx?pos=...=2001&ind=0 A-Rod is close and Manny is close offensively, but Pujols bests those guys by a decent margin.

QUOTE (Soxbadger @ Feb 24, 2011 -> 03:12 PM) Talk about a completely unprovable and most likely wrong statement. From all reports, teams wanted ASIK. But hey you probably would have said that Minnesota was crazy for trading Mayo for Love. After all Mayo was a superstar in the making, Love was just a solid big man. Just about everyone thought Minnesota was crazy for making that trade.

QUOTE (Soxbadger @ Feb 24, 2011 -> 02:27 PM) I think Mayo isnt starting because of stats like 75% from the free throw line and 40% shooting from the field. You can blame a coach or system all you want, but a great player will put the ball in the hoop in any system. Maybe if his stats were great but his numbers were low I could buy it, but his stats are bad so I can definitely see him not playing as much as last year. Mayo's not a great player though. He's a a slightly above average player with the potential to become an all-star. If you deter his development by sitting him in favor of Xavier Henry and then freakin' Tony Allen, I don't know how that's going to help him. Mayo's rate stats as a starter are much better than when he's on the bench. He's shooting 41% from the field and 41% from 3 when he starts, in comparison to 37 and 31 percent off the bench. I can't find the TS% or eFG% of the games where he starts without actually calculating it myself, but just eyeballing it, they're a lot better than his overall numbers this year. Benching him has really screwed his game up. This was a great buy low situation. To evaluate him just based on how badly he's played coming off the bench isn't fair to Mayo.

QUOTE (whitesoxfan99 @ Feb 24, 2011 -> 02:23 PM) Awful trade for the Celtics. I don't get how adding a combo 3/4 possibly that won't start and getting rid of a very good defensive C possibly improves that team. Especially since they just made it easier for the Heat to match up with them. Plus, the O'Neals aren't exactly the healthiest duo of big men.

QUOTE (fathom @ Feb 24, 2011 -> 02:19 PM) It's still crazy to me how much the Bulls shooting guard position this year resembles the rotation DH from last year's Sox team. Will there be a Manny Ramirez out there that's bought out by his team? Bogans = Kotsay...lol. And Kyle Korver can be Andruw Jones.

QUOTE (Soxbadger @ Feb 24, 2011 -> 02:19 PM) Mayo has scary trends which have turned me off on him. No excuse for being a 85%+ free throw shooter as a rookie and now at 75%. Stats like that make me question a palyers dedication. Maybe it's because his coach is misusing him. Mayo should be starting on just about every NBA team, but his coach tends to think Tony Allen deserves more playing time. I'd be pissed off and uninterested if I were him too.

QUOTE (Soxbadger @ Feb 24, 2011 -> 02:12 PM) They are both 41st at their respective positions. Not sure how you can say thats low for a Center, but not low for a Guard? Because PER overvalues the defensive abilities of bigs. The only defensive stats that go into PER are steals and blocks and I'm pretty sure Asik has a decent amount of blocks. You also have to take into account how misused Mayo has been this season. 12 PER is not his true talent. His true talent is more like 15-16 at this point, which is right up there with Luol Deng.

QUOTE (Soxbadger @ Feb 24, 2011 -> 02:09 PM) Asik per = 11.44 (41st Center) May per = 12.39 (41st SG) How is that homer talk? Centers are more scarce than guards. if you look at them statistically they are pretty similar. The only thing Mayo is much better at is hype. I loved him in HS, thought hed be great in College and have wanted him in the pros. But no way am I giving up a young talented Center on a risk like Mayo. They can have 1st round picks or whatever. An 11 PER for a big man is pretty low.

QUOTE (Jordan4life @ Feb 23, 2011 -> 07:36 PM) Yup. 2009 was indeed an outlier. 30+ HR allowed is pretty much a lock for Garza. He gave up 28 last year in one of the most pitcher friendly parks in baseball. I would be surprised if he didn't give up 35.
