Not a home run... So second and third, no outs. That was one real close call.

Chris Sale and Tony Pena in a tie game? Really? Was that bullpen that tired from yesterday?

White Sox Acquire Edwin Jackson
QUOTE (iamshack @ Aug 6, 2010 -> 05:09 PM) I don't think it has anything to do with Danks, in particular. I think the market for young stud pitchers, especially lefthanders is so ridiculous that it requires you to have a lot of cheap pieces elsewhere on your roster if you want to keep a guy or a few guys like Danks around. Secondly, I think that most of the time these ginormous contracts for pitchers end up coming back to haunt you. The Peavy contract makes this awfully difficult too. My instinct would be to trade him after this season. If you can get a Nick Markakis-type player back for him, I say why not? Sell high on Danks.

Your Level of "Baseball Knowledge" ?
QUOTE (J.Reedfan8 @ Aug 6, 2010 -> 05:08 PM) You are in the middle.. perhaps approaching the borderline retarded stage thanks to more advanced saber knowing. Those dudes are just on another planet of stupidity however. Oh phew.

QUOTE (J.Reedfan8 @ Aug 6, 2010 -> 05:03 PM) Obviously guys like Tmar, flippedoutpunk, jhonnydanks, etc.. are extremely intelligent people of Baseball knowledge. Guys like qwerty, Kalapse, etc.. are borderline retarded. Am I borderline retarded?

2010 MLB Catch-All Thread
QUOTE (scenario @ Aug 6, 2010 -> 09:58 AM) The Dodgers loss to the Padres last night had a familiar ring to it... Octavio Dotel gave up a couple of runs in the 9th... Scotty Pods misplayed a ball resulting in an inside-the-park homerun. God, I miss those days. It's like 2009 all over again...for the Dodgers.

2010 AL Central Catch-All
QUOTE (witesoxfan @ Aug 5, 2010 -> 02:08 PM) Oh yeah, and since the Royals are still in the AL Central, Jose Guillen was DFA'ed. No, the Sox should not pick him up. .236/.305/.369/.674 in his last 352 PAs .242/.277/.335/.613 in his last 174 PAs .175/.224/.299/.523 in his last 107 PAs .073/.093/.122/.215 in his last 43 PAs It is possible to be worse than Kotsay. Another $36 million wasted by Dayton Moore.

Your Level of "Baseball Knowledge" ?
Things I don't know 1. Historical stuff - I'm not old enough to tell you how many bases Nellie Fox stole in 1959. 2. Prospects and farm systems - Outside of the Sox and the top guys, I don't know much of anything. Goes for College Baseball as well. Things I do know 1. Sabermetrics - name any advanced stat that you don't understand and I can probably explain it to you. 2. Current state of baseball - I know (or pretend to know) the talent level of pretty much every player in the Majors. 3. I also pretend to know a little bit about pitching mechanics...

Video Game Catch-All Thread
QUOTE (ChWRoCk2 @ Aug 6, 2010 -> 02:14 PM) I haven't had madden since '08 but I hear that they will be providing an update so that you can choose to call your own plays or let madden do it. I want to say October 3rd is the date for the update, but don't quote me. I got a quick question regarding Amazon's pre order. I pre-ordered madden and will get it on release date with the 20 dollar video game credit, am I then able to use that credit on another video game I am going to pre order (reach) and then receive another 20 dollar credit? Can't believe it would work that way but if it does that is sick. I think that should work.

The Stealth Elf does it again!
QUOTE (southsider2k5 @ Aug 6, 2010 -> 02:10 PM) There was a ton of talk about him being a bust. I think some people were concerned. At least I didn't think he was going to be a bust. You don't become a bust at 21 with only one pro season under your belt.

Greinke very candid about frustration with Royals
QUOTE (Balta1701 @ Aug 6, 2010 -> 02:05 PM) So...you'd apply that description to the D-Backs front office? I liked Josh Byrnes. This DiPoto guy's an idiot though.

August White Sox Catch-All Thread
QUOTE (BigSqwert @ Aug 6, 2010 -> 12:02 PM) The Quotable Ozzie Guillen from The Onion The colorful White Sox manager is in the spotlight for comments about supposed favoritism toward Asian players, but it isn't the first time he's had something to say. * 2006: "I very much love the people and the fans of Chicago, because they pay me very much to play a baseball manager in Chicago, even though I very much hate the people and fans in Chicago" * 2006: "I don't give s*** about the home-field advantages for the World Series. You know what I care about? Where the f*** is the Smash Mouth? Why aren't they here for singing the 'All Star' song? I love that s***" * 2007: "I love Dustin Pedroia. He is very good hitter. And he has a strong back, so he could be climbed up on and I sit on his shoulders and ride around on him like riding a little horse that loves me and eats apples and I have to pitch around because he is a good hitter" * 2008: "I never say one bad thing about those stupid f***ing Cubs fans. Not a single word about those mother-s***ting pieces of f***" * 2008: "If we win the World Series, I will quit baseball and run for mayor mostly on a campaign platform of minimizing the city's budget, while still raising revenues with strategic tax plan for Chicago businesses" * 2009: "Wrigley Field makes me puke. When I eat a little bit of the ivy on the wall it make me puke barf everywhere" * 2010: It's not the fair for Japanese players have the interpreter. I want the interpreter so I can understand what the f*** it is I am talk about" Awesome.

Greinke very candid about frustration with Royals
QUOTE (Balta1701 @ Aug 6, 2010 -> 09:22 AM) You'll note though...Ankiel...got traded! The deal didn't bring back a top of the league prospect, but it did bring back some guys who might be MLB caliber filler players at some point, and even that can be valuable. If I were sitting in Moore's chair, I'd be trying to draft as well as I can, develop guys in the minors as much as I can...but then I'd also be taking some money and signing some guys in FA to fill things I considered obvious holes or places where I'd rather not bring up my young talent just yet (develop them more in the minors and push back their Arb years). I'd go after guys that aren't hugely expensive, even if I have to overpay a little to get them to KC, and I'd go after guys that for whatever reason might be able to play well enough to turn themselves into trade-bait. That way, maybe I sign one guy and he winds up being a complete waste, but maybe I sign an Ankiel/Podsednik, get a couple wins out of them, and then deal them for more young roster filler pieces to a desperate team at the deadline. If I draft well and can fill in top line players through the draft, I can round out my roster with other cheap guys by that technique. I know that he got traded, got some decent prospects back too. The problem with Moore is that he takes whatever little money he has and wastes it on bad baseball players. Instead of signing Kelly Johnson to a similar deal the Diamondbacks offered him, he signs Rick Ankiel. His evaluation of major league talent sucks. And frankly, his management of minor league talent also sucked up until this year. He's kept Kila the Hawaiian dude trapped down in the minors for the past three years. Who did he play in favor of him? Oh...you know, two DFA candidates in Jose Guillen and Mike Jacobs. And I won't even start to talk about Alex Gordon. He's had ML ready players on this team and in the system, instead of letting them play, he's blocking them with replacement level players.

Greinke very candid about frustration with Royals
QUOTE (Chicago White Sox @ Aug 6, 2010 -> 01:12 PM) I'll tell you what, I have no idea why teams like the Royals don't stock up on veteran relievers in the offseason, even if they have to overpay a little. As long as the deals are for one year, these guys are easy to move at the deadline and if they're performing well, can give you quite a haul. The Pirates' signing of Octavio Dotel is a perfect example. They tried and they failed. Kyle Farnsworth, Juan Cruz, etc...

QUOTE (JoeCoolMan24 @ Aug 6, 2010 -> 01:28 PM) Lol, now a 4th person has chimed in on Kotsay's defense... "Hey, THE SHOW, are you still bummed Kotsay was in yesterday's game?" ugh.. My point exactly...

Ozzie was just jealous that Buck Showalter had lineup cards with player's pictures on them. He's jealous of Buck's computer skillz.

The Stealth Elf does it again!
QUOTE (Princess Dye @ Aug 6, 2010 -> 01:25 PM) Sample size on Viciedo and Lillibridge still small. These two guys were killed mercilessly here but months ago, now they're heroes. Kotsay has had a lot of at-bats and hasnt produced. Easy target. I don't love having him as our left handed bat, but I dont know that putting our bench righties against RHP nonstop is the answer either. Who killed Viciedo...? People killing Lillibridge last year was more than warranted, he's a completely different type of player now.

The Stealth Elf does it again!
As of this moment, people are just pissed that Kotsay is taking away playing time from Viciedo, as Shack said above.

Help me before I go insane....
QUOTE (ptatc @ Aug 6, 2010 -> 10:46 AM) Or maybe the short sightedness is for the people that only look at the first 4 months of this season not his career. He has been a decent player his whole career. He is having a bad year so far, but what is to say he won't play closer to his career averages for the rest of the season? I'm not a big Kotsay fan in the full time DH role because he is a decent unspectacular player but the unrelentless bashing is getting old. Calling people baseball stupid because their opinion is different is going to the extreme. Are you really trying to defend people who think one good game makes them right when Kotsay has been absolutely horrible for the past 4 months? What he has done in the past is the past, he's no longer the 3-4 WAR player he was with Oakland and San Diego. At this point in his career, he's a .700 OPS hitter, a good bench player and nothing more.

Help me before I go insane....
QUOTE (chiguy79 @ Aug 6, 2010 -> 10:12 AM) What matters is what KW thinks: Meanwhile, Guillen received a note from general manager Ken Williams praising him on sticking with Kotsay, who was 5-for-42 before his three-hit game raised his overall average to .223. Kotsay's homer was his first since June 8 against the Tigers. You too Kenny? God damn it. Where is Rick Hahn when you need him?

Help me before I go insane....
QUOTE (lostfan @ Aug 6, 2010 -> 06:35 AM) You don't look dumb. One good game doesn't alleviate Kotsay's overall badness. Some people only believe in a few days, not four months. These are the people who are legitimately baseball stupid.

Greinke very candid about frustration with Royals
QUOTE (Balta1701 @ Aug 6, 2010 -> 07:56 AM) You can make some legit complaints about keeping guys in the minors for too long...but really, there's a lot to like with how they've operated this season. Their minors suddenly look nearly loaded with talented guys They signed guys who blocked their young players...then dealt those guys for additional youth They held onto the guys under their control and waited for a great offer (Which they didn't get). Legitimately they need to start looking to move Greinke this offseason or next season. They didn't need to waste any of the money they used on those terrible veteran players, such as Ankiel and Jason Kendall. Did I mention anything about Yuniesky Betancourt?
