  1. Fielder would put us in a financial pickle next year. He'd literally hand-cuff this team with his arbitration. You don't need a huge .400 wOBA hitter like Fielder or Dunn. You need somebody who's better than the combined .320 wOBA Kotsay and Jones are putting up. Adam LaRoche, David DeJesus, Luke Scott, they all can do that. You don't want to over-do it.
  2. I think of Daniel Hudson's ceiling as being a Shaun Marcum type pitcher.

QUOTE (Greg Hibbard @ Jul 21, 2010 -> 01:20 PM) 80% of the time he is a great closer 10% of the time he is a mediocre closer 10% of the time he is the most awful pitcher on the f***ing planet and he has pretty much always been that way, IMO Jenks was a model of consistency back in 07 and 08 before he got hurt. I'd say he's a great closer maybe 50% of the time and a mediocre one 30% of the time. With the other 20% being bad.

QUOTE (Jenksy Cat @ Jul 21, 2010 -> 01:14 PM) No, no its not and it's stupid to even compare those 2. I answered a question asking if a couple outings had inflated his numbers. They did. And a couple of innings in a game inflated Vazquez's ERA. Just saying that you can't take out extremes.

Bobby's peripherals look good, his problem is consistency.

QUOTE (ChiSox_Sonix @ Jul 21, 2010 -> 01:07 PM) See my sig That's where I got my inspirations, believe it or not.

QUOTE (Jenksy Cat @ Jul 21, 2010 -> 12:54 PM) Yep, that's a perfectly valid comparison. It's just saying that your way of making Jenks look better isn't valid.
  8. QUOTE (flavum @ Jul 21, 2010 -> 01:04 PM) Blackburn is out of the rotation. Duensing is starting Friday in Baltimore. Duensing's a decent pitcher, should bode well for the Twins. Shelly Duncan's error opens up the flood gates. 2-0 Twins, bases loaded, two down. Edit: 4-0 now.
  9. He was loading more, maybe he was trying to hit for more power? I noticed that he's changed his stance at the plate recently. He's now closed, whereas he was either slightly open or wide before.
  10. Jayson Nix = a half-way decent player.

Javier Vazquez could take one bad inning out of all of his starts and he'd be a Cy Young contender almost every year. The fact that people would bring up Jenks' bad outings just says that Jenks is wildly inconsistent and can't be relied on at all times.
  12. QUOTE (witesoxfan @ Jul 21, 2010 -> 12:38 PM) FanGraphs just did a good article on this, and how Amaro Jr apparently feels the need to maintain a good farm system while keeping a good product on the field. It has really cost the Phillies this year, because adding Lee to that team would have made them quite a bit more dangerous, and damn near unbeatable in the postseason. He traded Drabek anyhow, somebody he didn't want to trade last year. Amaro Jr. isn't exactly the smartest fish in the sea. After all, just look at that contract he gave Ryan Howard.
  13. QUOTE (Jordan4life @ Jul 21, 2010 -> 12:32 PM) Talks between the Phillies/Astros are said to be "heavy" in a deal that would send Roy Oswalt to Philadelphia. http://mlb.fanhouse.com/2010/07/21/sources...for-roy-oswalt/ Amaro Jr. gets an epic fail for not just bringing back Cliff Lee. He should have never traded him to begin with.
  14. Simply put, Lincecum's just not as good as he was a year ago. The FIP and xFIP are up with his ERA, he's no longer a super dominant pitcher. He's given up more home runs, his change-up has been much less effective than it was last year resulting in less Ks. He's also walking more people. It might be a combination of things.
  15. Twins and Indians are on right now.
  16. QUOTE (Balta1701 @ Jul 21, 2010 -> 08:02 AM) Teahen's probably not much better than Q out there in RF right now. That said, a Jones/Teahen RF platoon with Q at DH sets things up pretty darn well. Keeps Kotsay on the bench unless Konerko's getting a day off, keeps Teahen from ever having to face a LHP with his numbers against them. Teahen would be a slight upgrade over Quentin out there IMO.
  17. QUOTE (caulfield12 @ Jul 21, 2010 -> 10:58 AM) Pods was really bad (he improved his second time with us) and Rowand was simply overrated...because he dove all over the field and ran into fences, plays that Brian Anderson or Rios routinely make without breaking a sweat. Dye was never a very good defender at any point with us, because his arm was no longer a weapon. He had the reputation of having a very strong arm, but it wasn't close to what he had from around 1996-02 (not unlike Sosa, who had a great but inaccurate arm when he first came to the Sox from the Rangers). Pods was not bad, not back then. Remember, he had his groin issues starting this year, but that was in like July. This was when he was able to steal 40 bases efficiently in the first half alone. It wasn't the same Scott Podsednik back then. He had a UZR around +9 that year. Rowand was nowhere near overrated back then, UZR had him at +17, which I think led the league that year. Dye wasn't horrendous back then, he started becoming horrible in 2006. That outfield, in total, had a UZR of +22, even with Jermaine Dye's -4 UZR.
  18. That 05 left side of the infield was unstoppable. The outfield was great with Rowand in center, Pods in left, and a still alright Jermaine Dye in right. Iguchi and Konerko were more than serviceable on the right side of the infield. Plus, back then, A.J. was actually able to throw some guys out.
  19. The 05 defense was better.
  20. QUOTE (MattZakrowski @ Jul 21, 2010 -> 09:41 AM) Maybe they'd be interested in Putz. Not that I want to get rid of him, but I really want Werth. I'd do Putz + prospects not named Dan Hudson for Werth.
  21. QUOTE (Balta1701 @ Jul 21, 2010 -> 09:24 AM) They can probably find guys on the waiver wire or DFA candidates who are just as effective. Hell, they can probably attempt to pick up Jenks off the waiver wire in a couple weeks. As bad as Bobby is sometimes, he's still more consistent than Brad Lidge, who is currently their best option out of the pen.
  22. QUOTE (ChiSox_Sonix @ Jul 21, 2010 -> 09:24 AM) How much longer do we have him? One more year plus two arbit years? He makes $1.1 million next year. Then two arbitration years. The good thing is that I don't forsee Alexei becoming an incredible offensive player, so as long as he doesn't win gold gloves (which I don't think he will with Jeter and Andrus still in the league), the arbitrator isn't going to award him a lot of money if it were to go to arbitration.
  23. QUOTE (Balta1701 @ Jul 21, 2010 -> 08:00 AM) The Swisher trades... That was 2 years ago, I consider that a long time.
  24. I think Bobby Jenks would be somebody they would like. But if it's SP they want, we don't have any to give.
  25. Alexei Ramirez's WAR is now 1st in the AL among all SS. He's also third on the team among position players behind only Konerko and Rios. Alexei Ramirez has a +/- of +21. That is #1 among all SS in MLB and #1 among all position players in MLB. I knew Omar Vizquel was going to have somewhat of an effect on Alexei, but I didn't expect him to have THIS much of an effect.
