Confirmed: White Sox claim on Alex Rios on waivers
Maybe it's a double edged sword. He sort of wants Rios and he might also want to block off some contenders. But you're right, it's very risky.

Confirmed: White Sox claim on Alex Rios on waivers
A friend told me that Scott Merkin said that this claim is to keep Rios away from the Tigers. This was posted on his Facebook. I haven't bothered to check and befriend him on there, so can anybody confirm this?

Game Thread: 8/7 Sowers(3-7) @ Buehrle(11-5) 7:11CDT WCIU
QUOTE (NorthSideSox72 @ Aug 7, 2009 -> 04:29 PM) Looking at the radar, by my vague guesstimate, the rain should be pushing out by around 5:30 or 6:00pm. Aren't there scattered thunderstorms coming in at around 9?

Confirmed: White Sox claim on Alex Rios on waivers
QUOTE (Soxbadger @ Aug 7, 2009 -> 05:10 PM) Well thats the question, where would Rios be slotted? Would they want to bring back Pods in CF and have Rios replacing Dye? Would they have Rios in CF? Rios value as a CF is obviously a lot more. If you had to pick a position for Rios, it has to be center field.

Confirmed: White Sox claim on Alex Rios on waivers
QUOTE (Balta1701 @ Aug 7, 2009 -> 04:53 PM) And look what he did with it. Dewayne Wise is 2 for his last 2. One resulted in a home run, the other a game winning RBI single. What's Ozzie waiting for? lol

Confirmed: White Sox claim on Alex Rios on waivers
QUOTE (Balta1701 @ Aug 7, 2009 -> 04:51 PM) Both teams would make some sense, San Fran moreso, but if I was reading what you posted earlier correctly, would he have to get past the whole AL before he got to either of them? Yeah, he would have to go through the AL teams first.

QUOTE (southsider2k5 @ Aug 7, 2009 -> 04:49 PM) ESPN speculation is around San Francisco and the Mets, Sox aren't mentioned. Well they're already wrong about the Mets.

QUOTE (JDsDirtySox @ Aug 7, 2009 -> 04:35 PM) Will Carrol is reporting on twitter that there is a lot of speculation that the White Sox are the team that claimed Rios. He must have been reading the MLBTR comments.

Confirmed: White Sox claim on Alex Rios on waivers
There's only 5 teams ahead of us in the waiver order since the AL gets first dibs. 1. Royals - No 2. Orioles - No 3. Indians - No 4. A's - No 5. Twins - No 6. White Sox - Maybe 7. Mariners - No 8. Tigers - Maybe 9. Rays - No 10. Rangers - No 11. Red Sox - Maybe 12. Angels - No 13. Yankees - Maybe We're the first maybe of the bunch. If KW really wants him, there's a good chance that we claimed him.

Smoltz DFA'ed
QUOTE (GO CHI SOX! @ Aug 7, 2009 -> 04:05 PM) Wouldnt be surprised if the Tigers picked him up. Why would they? Porcello's turned it around these past few starts and they have Washburn now. Galarraga's probably better than Smoltz at this point.

Confirmed: White Sox claim on Alex Rios on waivers
QUOTE (SoxFan1 @ Aug 7, 2009 -> 04:01 PM) So he's been terrible in the OF but you want him in LF? Either way, every indication from the White Sox is that Beckham will be a 3B and for a long time. With that said, I wouldn't mind Figgins/Ramirez/Beckham/Konerko around the infield. No I want him at 3B or 2B. I thought he only played left field.

Confirmed: White Sox claim on Alex Rios on waivers
QUOTE (SoxFan1 @ Aug 7, 2009 -> 03:56 PM) Figgins has played 244 career games in CF compared to 36 in LF and 27 in RF. And he's been terrible in the outfield. His UZR/150 in the OF over the years is a -6.4. Not good. I'd rather stick him at 3B.

Confirmed: White Sox claim on Alex Rios on waivers
QUOTE (SoxFan1 @ Aug 7, 2009 -> 03:52 PM) You know, I wouldn't mind this if we could afford him, but it makes far more sense for next season than it would for this season. You're obviously not going to sit Pods. You're not going to sit Dye, Thome or Quentin either. Ozzie would have to work his magic and in order to have Rios play every day, one of CQ, Dye, and Thome would have to sit. And then you det yourself up well for next year if you want Rios in LF and Quentin in RF, with one of Thome/Dye DHing. Then you go an get Figgins for CF and you've got yourself a nice lineup. Or you could even keep Pods and keep him in LF with Rios in CF... Pods LF Beckham 3B Quentin RF Dye/Thome DH Konerko 1B Pierzynski C Rios CF Ramirez SS Getz 2B or Figgins CF Beckham 3B Quentin RF Dye/Thome DH Konerko 1B Pierzysnki C Rios LF Ramirez SS Getz 2B Rios would be the best defensive outfielder on the team if we get him. You definitely stick him in center. I don't think Figgins can play CF. He's played left before, if I remember correctly.

He can go anywhere and still suck.

Confirmed: White Sox claim on Alex Rios on waivers
QUOTE (Balta1701 @ Aug 7, 2009 -> 03:23 PM) The problem is...his contract may be fair, but he's on a team that can't afford too many fair, or especially any unfair contracts. And they have at least 1 of the latter. Like Vernon Wells... Riccardi looks really stupid right now. He's paying Wells $20 million to suck on both offense and defense.

Carl Pavano traded
QUOTE (BigSqwert @ Aug 7, 2009 -> 11:55 AM) It's a good thing that a team that we're fighting with for the division title acquired him? I was looking more short-sighted than far-sighted I guess. I was saying that it's good we won't have to face him tomorrow.

Carlos Quentin...
He's had numerous games where he's hit the ball very hard, but usually right at somebody. Just give him some time.

Does Kenny have his eye on Wagner?
It depends how much salary the Mets will pick-up. If they're even going to give us money for the buy-out next year, okay.
