Weber Receives Contract Extension
UofIChiSox replied to AddisonStSox's topic in Alex’s Olde Tyme Sports Pub
QUOTE(IlliniKrush @ Jul 15, 2005 -> 05:58 PM) Bottom line is that Weber can win with good players, whether they are his or not. He doesn't even need the good players. Look what he did at SIU. with the good players, there's no reason that we wouldn't want Weber. -
QUOTE(AddisonStSox @ Jul 15, 2005 -> 03:36 PM) I was actually up at night the other day, stirring at how distant a future Illini run at the Final Four may be. I know we just extended Weber through 2011, and I'm very happy about that, but we won't see a talent level similar to that of the 2004 team for years to come. Kinda sad actually. That said, I wouldn't trade this season for anything in the world. It was one hell of a ride and I was damn proud to be a small part of it. I gotta disagree, we are only a few years from another final four in my opinion if Weber can land Sherron Collins, Eric Gordon, and Derrick Rose. If we got these three guys, we'd have a backcourt that would be right there with Williams-Brown-Head.

I'm from the Peoria area and a huge Sox fan. It happened because of good ole Sportschannel back in the day before Fox Sports Chicago/Comcast. It sucks. Peoria is basically a Cubs/Cards border town, I was at the mall last weekend, tons of Cubs and Cards stuff, not a Sox Tshirt to be had.

QUOTE(the People's Champ @ Jul 13, 2005 -> 11:57 PM) a REAL fan would have noticed that in the sig is Podsednik, not Ventura, therefore the word ROBIN, with one B would be inappropriate, whereas ROBBIN' as in robbing or stealing, which is something that Pods does best, would not be get it? But what if Ventura had been more of a stolen base threat and the pic was of him? That would be a very sticky situation.

I wonder if Radke bought it at all. I wish I was an MLB prankster
-
I wouldn't think Jenks would be traded, but with Kenny you never know. He's certainly at least a year from being an effective MLB Reliever from the looks of things.
-
Let's see, Bobby Jenks since he's any fat man's hero! Also I've heard that it's almost impossible to understand anything that comes out of Uribe's mouth, so I guess it'd be fun to have a conversation with him.

QUOTE(ZoomSlowik @ Jul 12, 2005 -> 05:57 PM) I was on the field during batting practice last year (I won it in a charity auction. looks like I got screwed on the price. Oh Well. ). That was awesome. We got there really early before the park opened, so the Sox were still taking batting practice. We were standing right next to the dugout, and whenever the players were done with their batting set they came over. They were all really cool, I think only the guys in the last group blew us off because they had to get going. I got a ball signed by Maggs, a pennant from Carlos, plus pictures with a lot of them. We also met Ozzie, KW, and the Hawk. Hawk was awesome, we asked him why he doesn't say "Grab some bench" as much anymore, and he said, "Well, normally when I say that I don't like the son of a b****" . My only complaint was that we didn't get to meet the pitchers. They're always in the bullpen early and don't always stop by the dugout apparently. However, I thought it was a blast, and well worth $300 a person. you changed my mind, that sounds awesome. $300 is a steal!

QUOTE(robinventura23 @ Jul 12, 2005 -> 05:46 PM) My favorite Bo moment was in 1993. When the Sox clinched the AL West championship. He launched a HR to LF to give the Sox the lead in the clinching game. That's gotta be the defining Bo Jackson White Sox moment, and also happens to be one of the first specific, in-game moments that I still remember watching.

What would you do if the Sox won the World Series?

QUOTE(tonyho7476 @ Jul 12, 2005 -> 05:35 PM) How cool would it be to own the 'Official White Sox World Series Video'? I would love to be able to relive this season over and over again. When the Illini were in the championship game, the thing that I was looking forward to most if we won would be the 2 minute long sports illustrated commercials about the commemorative packages for the 2005 national champion illini, complete with leatherboung book, video, and cap/tshirt/ball whatever. I'd look forward to the same thing with the Sox in the World Series. -
QUOTE(tonyho7476 @ Jul 12, 2005 -> 05:25 PM) I am going to probably due the first one...batting practice....but it kind of sounded like I wouldn't really be able to interact with the players at all...I was hoping for an autograph or two and maybe a picture...but I think I'll still do it. 2005 Baseball Fantasy Experiences Field Access for a portion of White Sox Batting Practice Price: $300 per person/$150 per child (13 years old and under) (Excluding Day games and the White Sox/Cubs Series) * VIP seats * VIP parking pass * Souvenir photo I'm confused about that one, you're just on the field while the Sox take BP? or do you actually get to step in the box and take a few swings? I would think it would be well worth it to get to take a couple swings, but not worth it otherwise.

QUOTE(Milkman delivers @ Jul 12, 2005 -> 03:14 PM) I wouldn't let Abreu off the hook. 24 homers in the first round?! Damn, Sosa did less than that and he was dead by the final round...but Abreu hit another 11 in the finals. That's just too fishy to me. It thought so too, but look at all the pitched he took. That's a lot of time that he sort of could relax. Seemed like after just about every homer he took at least one pitch. Having played baseball before, you actually do get tired pretty fast by just standing in the box and swinging at pitches thrown to you in rapid fire succession. I think he was able to hit so many homers because he took so many pitches.

QUOTE(SoxFan101 @ Jul 12, 2005 -> 03:14 PM) You would think the Royals would do more with him, Is Bo a big sox fan? I'll admit not having much knowledge around baseball, but from what I've seen with the Sox, it seems like we do much more to honor former players, even those that are not hall of fame caliber than most other teams. Also, when Bo was at KC they had the biggest star in their history, George Brett, so maybe he was overshadowed some?

QUOTE(southsider2k5 @ Jul 12, 2005 -> 03:06 PM) Amazing because it was all natural. Yeah, I should have dropped that part in too.

ESPN Loser Has This To Say about the Sox
UofIChiSox replied to Southside hitmen's topic in Pale Hose Talk
QUOTE(bschmaranz @ Jul 12, 2005 -> 02:10 PM) Did anyone actually READ the article or did they just notice the White Sox stuff? The guy is a comedy writer, nothing else. He's not working for ESPN because he's a statistician, he's there for humor. You guys take this stuff too literally. I did, that's why I was trying to defend him. He even ADMITS to Being a Red Sox fan, only watching the American League. Hell, we haven't played the Red Sox so he's probably NEVER EVEN SEEN US PLAY. Those should be enough red flags for you to figure out that this isn't a serious baseball analysis article. He probably looked at some stats, looked at the standings and bam, wrote up some comedy. -
Also, after what's happened with Rogers, I would think he'd be more careful now than ever because of all of the negative pub he's gotten.

QUOTE(daa84 @ Jul 12, 2005 -> 02:25 PM) its how it is. come on i mean they are gonna call it like they see it. at first they didnt see it as a good trade, or the sox as a good team. now they do. of course they are gonna flip flop like that. yes they were wrong about this team in the first place, but dont slam them for changing their minds now, because now they realize that the chisox are good. good lord, people on this message board will go to any length toj ust complain about something. at first people complain that media bashed the trade. now that they give it some credit you wanna go and say that the media is hypocritical. no. they were wrong, realized their mistakes, and now say what is truly correct. if you are gonna bash, bash for being wrong, not for "jumping on the bandwagon" sheesh Analysts like Gammons and BBTN crew are paid to voice their opinions on national TV. Sometimes those opinions change over time, so of course they are going to flip flop and sometimes or even often be wrong.

Doesn't Bo come to Sox spring training still to be a guest instructor sometimes though? I think he has more continuing ties with us than the Royals. Also, I know Jose Canseco is not the most looked up to guy, but he speaks very highly of Bo Jackson in his book. He talks about how amazed he was with Bo because he was the only guy in baseball bigger and faster than Jose.

One of the reasons we have a good record is that we get 2 or 3 wins and it's enough to win a lot of games.

QUOTE(SoxFan1 @ Jul 12, 2005 -> 03:50 AM) Another guy had a Sox hat on. It was a TV celebrity. Anybody have more info on who that was?
-
There's nobody who could do a good job calling the home run derby though. it's repetitive. Berman ends up just doing a bunch of oh's and ah's and trying to work in a back, back, back........ I really don't have much interest in this if there are no White Sox involved.

UofIChiSox replied to crash's topic in Pale Hose Talk
I don't know what I'd do, I'm sure I'd have had a better idea if the Illini could have beat UNC, then I would have known my reaction to that, and been able to multiply it by roughly pi (3.14), I think. -

QUOTE(Sox Hustler @ Jul 12, 2005 -> 03:41 AM) I really don't care about getting any love from ESPN but even after what we've done we still don't get the benefit of the doubt. This is pretty bad, this guy has no f***ing clue, as long as Carrie Wood K's 300 and loses 15 with a 4.50 hes still 10 times better than Garland, according to him. The guy is a writer for ESPN Page 2, supposed to combine humor and sports. he's not a straight up baseball analyst. Almost all of his articles are only half serious anyhow. -

First off, I'm a big fan of Simmons' stuff, he's hilarious a lot of the time. Hell, even though I don't neccessarily agree with these dubious honors, the fact that he came up with them is pretty funny. For the Napolean Dynamite one, nobody expected the Sox to be where they are, so what are we?? A surprise. Furthermore in today's game most great teams have a couple great players and role players around them, whereas we have a lot of good players, but no megastars. it really sort of is an inexplicable success. nobody figured we could win and we are. Then for the Garland thing, it's hard to blame the guy, Garland has been a mediocre starter for what, four seasons? All of a sudden he has a good half season. I think he's figured his stuff out and won't collapse, but I can't blame somebody for taking the "I'll believe it when I see it" approach. -
Bret Boone isn't what he once was, but he's still better than what the Twins had. I don't think this will be a big enough acquisition to put them over the top though.
