Final Four
QUOTE (caulfield12 @ Apr 5, 2014 -> 10:11 PM) Kentucky with some amazing athleticism there from Poythress. (And somehow, no turnovers for the entire 2nd half with such a young team). Well, having 6 McDonald's All-Americans in one class, what do you expect? Really don't want to see them rewarded with a National Championship again, that's not good for the sport (although the media loves to talk about it). How is it not good for the sport? Elaborate please

Final Four
QUOTE (southsider2k5 @ Apr 7, 2014 -> 10:26 AM) Yeah, I can't buy that a team with 10 losses, and 6 of those in the SEC was underseeded. Coming into the dance they had one win against a rated team, and four losses against non-rated teams. I know this team has more talent than any team in the dance, but they had not played to that talent before the tourney. Kentucky was preseason #1 as well.

The Portland White Sox?
QUOTE (HickoryHuskers @ Apr 7, 2014 -> 09:55 AM) Indy may have the market size to support a team, but I don't think it's realistic. Indiana just isn't a baseball state, and you have the Reds pretty close by with the Cubs/Sox also not too far away. I think the Indians draw like 8,000-10,000 fans per night. Is that good for a minor league team?

2014 TV thread
QUOTE (Athomeboy_2000 @ Apr 3, 2014 -> 03:35 PM) @Variety BREAKING: David Letterman retiring http://on.variety.com/1j68pel @SeanMMcNally Relevant to Letterman's retirement: Jon Stewart's contract expires mid-2015. Colbert's the end of 2014. http://nyti.ms/1hFNNtC From what I've read, it seems like Stephen Colbert is CBS' first choice. I also read that Chelsea Handler was negotiating with CBS though. I know that Craig Ferguson's contract states that he gets $9 million if he doesn't get the Late Show. My guess is that Colbert gets the Late Show, Handler gets the Late Late Show, and Ferguson takes his money and does something else. It's a shame because Ferguson is awesome but he doesn't give a s*** about his show anymore and I'm pretty sure he has like zero shot at the Late Show.

The Portland White Sox?
QUOTE (caulfield12 @ Apr 7, 2014 -> 09:43 AM) Someone said OKC and Indianapolis were the two best markets in terms of local t.v. rights/shares. Always thought Charlotte would be viable. Louisville, Salt Lake City and Buffalo used to have the biggest AAA attendance once upon a time. Las Vegas, but they have the same issues with non-permanent residents/tourism as the Florida teams do. And just too hot in the middle of the summer, unless you build a domed stadium, and nobody really wants those anymore. That said, nothing can touch the Chicago media market in terms of competitive advantage, even for the second team in a city. Las Vegas, Charlotte, and Indianapolis all have minor league teams that draw very well. I thought I heard about rumors of the Rays moving to Nashville? I think Nashville would be a great place for a pro baseball team.

Coors Field
QUOTE (SnB @ Apr 7, 2014 -> 08:14 AM) I'll be in town for a work trip this week and will be catching Tuesday's game. Any recommendations for food/drink/where to sit/etc. I believe I have parking all set up, so no worries there. And yes, I totally did schedule this trip around catching a game. Coors in awesome. There are a lot of places in the downtown to eat right there and parking was really easy when I have gone. Rocky Mountain Oyster's are good if you like that sort of thing. The Coors Brewery is about 40 minutes away in Golden, CO if you have time for a trip. It's a pretty cool place.

2014 AL Central catch-all thread
QUOTE (greg775 @ Apr 6, 2014 -> 10:24 PM) I firmly believe we have a better team on paper than Minnesota. So that's saying something this season. Sox are making progress? Well I would hope so. I think the Twins are the worst team in the AL.

4/6 White Sox @ Royals 1:10pm CT
QUOTE (greg775 @ Apr 6, 2014 -> 08:40 PM) Robin on track to be a manager of the year candidate if he can keep the team at .500. My gosh I wish we'd some how just cut Dunn so Abreu could start his DH career. Let Paulie play first the rest of his farewell season and get on with it. There's absolutely no reason to not have Abreu DH right now. He's a hitter, not a fielder. That said, tip of the cap to A. Garcia for playing better in right field today. Maybe he can improve and become a grade of C defensively. Paulie doesn't want to start every day nor should he. Jesus Christ can we stop with this please? Now if you want to argue that Dunn should be let go so that De Aza and Viciedo can play every day, I won't argue with you, but stop with the Konerko nonsense.

2014 Draft class
QUOTE (Joshua Strong @ Apr 6, 2014 -> 11:06 PM) I think Jackson is the best position player in the draft, I think if the Sox were to draft him that we would be willing to sign under slot a al Carlos Correa so the White Sox would be able to sign better players later in the draft. If I were Rick Hahn, Alex Jackson would be the pick at #3 because the ceiling is so high and there is just too much poetential with the bat. Aiken and Kolek wouldn't look bad at #3 either. I understand the philosophy but I think the Sox should do what they do. Draft the best pitcher. Then draft more pitching. If you can load up on arms you can always trade for already developed position players from other organizations.

QUOTE (flavum @ Apr 6, 2014 -> 02:37 PM) Hawkins homer from yesterday http://www.milb.com/multimedia/vpp.jsp?con...99&sid=milb I posted this and his previous day's HR in the 4/5 thread if you want to see them both.

4/6 Games
QUOTE (Chilihead90 @ Apr 7, 2014 -> 01:22 AM) I see videos posted of his defense every day on twitter. Apparently he's just sick with the glove. I guess a Jose Igelsias, Didi Gregorious type if he can get even a marginal bat to get him to the majors. Stoltz used Brendan Ryan as the comparison for Rondon.

2014 Draft class
QUOTE (maggsmaggs @ Apr 6, 2014 -> 11:06 AM) Is that right? Then, nevermind, that would be a horrible idea. For example, say a team has $10 million to spend in the first 10 rounds. Lets pretend that the 1st pick holds a slotted $$ figure of $6 million. That means that if you don't sign your 1st round pick, the team would only have $4 million to spend on the rest of the draft. This happened to the Pirates a couple years ago. They drafted Appel 8th overall. After signing the rest of their draft class, they only had the $3.8 million available to sign Appel that was the slot value of that selection. They got another top ten pick the next year however.

Who's buying this excuse for Hawkins' 2013 struggles?
QUOTE (southside hitman @ Apr 6, 2014 -> 11:07 AM) Laughable he's "eyeing" AA after three games, he was completely overmatched by High A all last season. I would be fine with him staying in Winston-Salem for the majority of the season. If he's tearing it up and they want to give him a taste of Birmingham for the playoffs or something, that's a different story. He doesn't deserve/need a promotion until then. Didn't he play the end of the season at Birmingham as an 18 year old in his first season? I don't think it's unrealistic that he thought he had a chance to get back there. I think it's unrealistic. But I'm not a teenager.

2014 Films Thread
QUOTE (caulfield12 @ Apr 6, 2014 -> 12:50 AM) Tony or Jose? Single Mom's Club B+...got ravaged by critics, but this is one of his better non-Madea movies, and Zulay Henao (Colombian) is smoking hot. Had never seen her before. Amazing for 34 or 35. Mr. Peabody & Sherman B...fond memories of this cartoon from growing up. Captain America: Winter Soldier...A/A- just a notch behind Avengers, Redford's addition ads some gravitas, as well as Sam Wilson...not a huge Black Widow fan, but she was more tolerable in this one. Did a really good job of tying in the past of our country with the future globalized/your enemy can be anywhere feeling that has prevailed since 9/11. Bad Words....well done, Jason Bateman...unfortunately it won't be seen by many until it comes out on DVD...Bateman at his surly/snippy/sarcastic best, really enjoyed the interaction throughout the film with the Indian contestant. You could see the "reveal" coming a bit early, but it was still eminently watchable and pretty cleverly done. Always enjoy Allison Janney in whatever she does. Divergent: B/B-...flatter, less charismatic versions of Katniss and Peeta (well, actually, I like FOUR in the Divergent series a lot more than Miss Everdeen's love interests, but Woodley isn't quite Jennifer Lawrence in terms of taking over a screen and making you pay attention to her)...really, what I mean to say is that this story feels a bit flat coming on the heels of Twilight and Hunger Games, but it still did well enough to make sure the entire trilogy makes it to screen. Liked Shailene more in THE DESCENDANTS with Clooney. Caulfield, did you ever read The Giver? Divergent is similar to Lois Lowry's novel.

Who's buying this excuse for Hawkins' 2013 struggles?
QUOTE (maggsmaggs @ Apr 6, 2014 -> 09:03 AM) Haha, I couldn't help but laugh at this quote: Then, why did the Sox send him to High-A right away? I mean, if they want a kid to slow down, then go slow with his placement. Hawkins was a raw 18-year-old with oozing talent, but a flawed swing and a lot to learn. He should have been in Low-A last year. The quote just seems so misguided, like let's blame the kid when the organization was equally fast-tracking him. It's an interesting debate. Some would say that he needed to fail so that his bad habits would become exposed. If he went back to Kannapolis he may have continued to rake while continuing to exhibit bad habits at the plate. The results were awful at WS last year but if that is the reason why he changed something it may have worked for the better, no? I don't really have an opinion on which is better without knowing the kid or seeing him in person but it is interesting.

2014 Draft class
QUOTE (Jake @ Apr 5, 2014 -> 06:14 PM) I see no reason to take Hoffman at 3 and if it is with Rodon on the board, it is unconscionable Wait why shouldn't they take Jeff Hoffman at #3?

2014 Draft class
QUOTE (maggsmaggs @ Apr 6, 2014 -> 09:05 AM) Here is an interesting thought. What if next year's draft is better than this year? Maybe you take Rodon, don't sign him and "blame" Boras and next year, you get the 4th pick in addition to the one we earn from this year. I could see that as a possibility if the draft class were just bad, which does not seem the case this year. You also lose the ability to spend the pick value of that 1st rounder though which is something like $6 million.

4/5 Games
Here are Hawkin's Homers from the last nights and some video on Tim Anderson courtesy of Nathaniel Stoltz. Nathaniel Stoltz @stoltz_baseball 3h First, here's Courtney Hawkins' mammoth blast from yesterday: Nathaniel Stoltz @stoltz_baseball 3h You can't really see where the ball lands in the video. It ended up landing on the concourse to the right of the wooden roof. Nathaniel Stoltz @stoltz_baseball 2h Here's Courtney Hawkins' homer from tonight: … Note to Carolina League pitchers: No offspeed stuff in the zone to him! Here's the video: Also: Hawkins strikes out here but actually takes some breaking balls: Now onto Tim Anderson. Nathaniel Stoltz @stoltz_baseball 2h Took seven viewings to see it, but Tim Anderson's talent was crystal clear tonight on both sides of the ball. Nathaniel Stoltz @stoltz_baseball 2h Here's Anderson ripping a double to right-center: Nathaniel Stoltz @stoltz_baseball 2h And here Anderson pulls a single: Nathaniel Stoltz @stoltz_baseball 1h Here's Anderson going oppo for a triple: Everyone wanted him to go for the inside-the-parker.

4/5 Games
QUOTE (caulfield12 @ Apr 5, 2014 -> 09:43 PM) Just doesn't seem like he has that dominating type of stuff...maybe a 5th, but more likely long relief or set-up. Hawkins is the minor league version of Dunn...three outcomes (well, fewer walks). May and Barnum both struggling out of the gate, Barnum still hitless. Nice to see Anderson with all the extra base hits. Hopefully by the time he reaches the majors, he's a 15-18 homer guy with 30 steal potential. And, most importantly, sticking at SS instead of 2B or CF. Micah Johnson 2 for 3, but I don't think he's going to put up more than 50-60 steals this season in AA. I don't think anyone has any idea as to what Hawkins is yet. It's a tad soon to be labeling him as a 3 outcome guy. And if he turns into that guy he will have a very successful career.

Matt Davidson
QUOTE (BaconOnAStick @ Apr 6, 2014 -> 12:16 AM) He'll still see major league action this year of course, but I think Conor Gillaspie will have an, at the very least, marginally better major league career. (I don't see him panning out like everyone else thinks it's a sure thing) Well that's quite the shot in the dark

4/5- White Sox @ Royals 1:10 PM CT
QUOTE (greg775 @ Apr 5, 2014 -> 04:27 PM) Too late for this year unless they turn some starters into relievers. Just think when we do get a slim lead, who the hell is going to close it out? Still, if DeAza just puts the ball in play we might have stole a game. The fans were restless and booing Wade at that point. Maybe we'd have stolen one. It's tough to "enjoy the youth" when you actually watch the entire game and your favorite team appears to have a chance to beat the heavily favored team and blows it. The highlight of that game from a Sox standpoint was the throw by Nieto to nail Dyson. Lot of lowlights. The highlight for me was Ramirez continuing to hit so that the Sox can trade him.

4/5- White Sox @ Royals 1:10 PM CT
Man people living and dying with these games already? This team isn't going to be very good. Enjoy the youth and take the good times with the struggles otherwise it's going to be a long year. I'm looking forward to that Winston Salem game later.
