  1. QUOTE (southsider2k5 @ Jul 20, 2013 -> 09:12 AM) To be fair, the beat writers and broadcasts would be the last place you would hear something like this. That spineless group is afraid of hurting anyone's feelings. You can usually tell though. My girlfriend is a Pirates fan. We were watching the Cubs-Pirates game last year and it was one of the games where like 3 players were traded mid game. They were all hugging their teammates and Kasper speculated that they were probably traded. Again though, who knows what Sox broadcast would do because Kenny added talent all of the time haha.
  2. QUOTE (SoxPride18 @ Jul 20, 2013 -> 10:27 AM) I'd love a package built around Cecchini. Boston and Arizona are definitely the teams that we want interested. Those are two systems loaded with position players.
  3. Nick Cafardo ‏@nickcafardo 16m The Red Sox have scouted both Alex Rios and Michael Young in the past week. Will be watching Jake Peavy closely in his next couple of starts
  4. QUOTE (ChiSox_Sonix @ Jul 19, 2013 -> 01:51 PM) Stanton would cost the Pirates way more than Polanco. You're talking about Polanco + Hanson + Taillon Yes I understand that but I just meant that Polanco could be used in a deal to acquire someone like that.

  6. QUOTE (witesoxfan @ Jul 19, 2013 -> 11:59 AM) Before Garza goes, Peavy is the best pitcher on the market. Levine is high on drugs. He is injured though. I think it means there are multiple teams in the Garza hunt. Once Texas gets him, all of those teams must turn their attention to Peavy and Bud Norris. There isn't much else.
  7. QUOTE (DirtySox @ Jul 19, 2013 -> 10:55 AM) Polanco is projected to be a much better player than Barnes or Bell. He can replace Rios when that contract is up. Polanco is a stud. I don't think he's getting traded unless the Pirates went all out and got a guy like Stanton.
  8. Bruce Levine mentioned this morning that once Garza goes, Peavy becomes best SP on the market. He said scouts from 10-12 will be in attendance tomorrow night to watch Peavy pitch.
  9. QUOTE (IowaSoxFan @ Jul 19, 2013 -> 09:28 AM) Rangers want Garza in time to start tomorrow. Talking about moving on to Bud Norris if they can't get a deal done soon. Sounds like Cubs are holding out for Luke Jackson.
  10. Alexei, Rios, and cash to PIttsburgh for something like: Hanson, Kingham, Tabata, and Mercer. Is that enough? Too much? Barrett Barnes is a guy that the Sox were rumored to be taking with the draft pick that they selected Keon Barnum with. Lambo is old I do believe but he is hitting a ton of homers in their system. Also, Stetson Allie is a guy I'd take a flyer on. He didn't work out as a pitcher but he is killing the ball in A Ball as a hitter. Pittsburgh has a ton of prospects. I would think Polanco, Taillon, and Glasnow are guys that they'd like to keep but other guys should be in play.
  11. QUOTE (witesoxfan @ Jul 19, 2013 -> 09:55 AM) TRIVIA: Who was the last team to win a World Series without someone on the team making an 8 digit figure? Ummm...2005 White Sox?
  12. QUOTE (Paulstar @ Jul 18, 2013 -> 06:23 PM) Maybe someone poisoned you into thinking that strikeouts are no different than any other out. I'm not here to defend Greg but the arrogance you have for traditional stats is mind boggling. If you think strikeouts are no big deal, thats fine. But people who think they are bad aren't idiots either. Its a different school of thought, and there are arguments on both sides. But I guess only the almighty saber gods like you know how to correctly evaluate the production of players. I never said anyone was an idiot. Strikeout with a runner on 3rd and less than 2 outs is really bad. Most other situations it does not hurt you anymore than a different kind of out would. There are many people on this board who know a hell of a lot more about advanced metrics than I do by the way but I'll be the saber god if you want me to be.
  13. QUOTE (greg775 @ Jul 18, 2013 -> 11:38 PM) Would they trade Alvarez for Rios, Alexei and Crain? Throw in Mitchell if we have to? Young power hitting third baseman? Haha so you hate the way Adam Dunn plays baseball but you want Pedro Alvarez? You would hate the amount that he K's Greg.
  14. QUOTE (Eminor3rd @ Jul 18, 2013 -> 02:16 PM) Yeah, I cant imagine Anderson sticks around now. Lars Anderson was released today. Makes more sense now.
  15. Mark Gonzales ‏@MDGonzales 2m Pitchers Nick McCully and Taylor Thompson promoted from Double-A Birmingham to Charlotte. Michael Earley is also promoted to Charlotte via Mark Gonzalez.
  16. QUOTE (iamshack @ Jul 18, 2013 -> 03:04 PM) A few years ago, it was Rios he did this to. So am I wasting my time defending Adam Dunn haha? I didn't even mention that he's usually top 5 in pitches seen per plate appearance.
  17. QUOTE (TaylorStSox @ Jul 18, 2013 -> 07:52 AM) How do you know that he could have gotten more value? That's why I hate armchair GM'ing. Nobody here knows anything about the trade value of a player in any given year. It's not like Hudson was a top 10 prospect that was over matching everyone. It's not like Jackson wasn't highly sought after. It was a good trade that worked well for us. I don't know that they could have. I said I thought that they could have. Arizona is reluctant to trade Holmberg now because he has been pitching so well. I hated including Holmberg in the deal at the time and I hate it today.
  18. QUOTE (greg775 @ Jul 18, 2013 -> 02:52 PM) Good post, but I can't see him getting $10 million a season anytime in the future. You can blame age, but I'd blame production. Re. Dunn. It's the annual advanced stats people vs. normal stat people. When he goes 1-for-30 or strikes out 3-4 times in a game, I think that contributes to lineup lethargia and overall team s***tiness. Maybe he does have some value, but I think most people who do not follow advanced stats closely would disagree violently. To many people, Dunn is a lineup wrecker because of his Ks and long stretches of awful-ness. Most General Managers do not agree with you though. I could care less who disagrees violently. I understand Dunn's flaws. But what you are failing to grasp is the positives that he provides. Guys that take walks and hit a s***load of homers don't grown on trees. If Dunn were not on this baseball team this season they would be a lot closer to the worst record in baseball. What Dunn provides is important. The team is just so bad that what he provides doesn't really make much of a difference. There are many players on the White Sox that are a lot worse than Dunn but you insist on beating this dead horse and I don't really understand why.
  19. QUOTE (thxfrthmmrs @ Jul 18, 2013 -> 01:58 PM) That is an absurd loophole that baseball needs to fix. If we don't at any other measurements other than the market population, St. Louis definitely ranks in the upper echelon of baseball teams. This team has consistently finished in the Top 5 in attendance for the past decade, 2 world series wins in the past 7 years, currently has one of the top 5 farms systems in the league, and their team has been a perennial playoff contender every year in this century. Business wise, the most recent Forbes ranking had this team ranked 10th in terms of value (Sox at 11th), and 7th in revenue. So I do not really see how the "small" market in St. Louis is preventing the Cardinals from being a successful franchise, or the small population is preventing them from generating revenue and going out to spend $$ on free agents. I saw that St. Louis made $239 million last season which is in the top 10 in baseball. They have absolutely no business getting extra draft picks.
  20. QUOTE (Y2JImmy0 @ Jul 18, 2013 -> 02:42 PM) I don't know how to answer this. You have an agenda. You always have. Someone a long time ago poisoned you that strikeouts are bad. Dunn has value. Even when Adam Dunn was a monster there were many people who didn't like the way he played baseball. Dunn was always paid to hit 40 bombs, walk 100 times, score a bunch of runs, and have an .ops near .900. He did that job consistently for many many years. Teams were willing to live with the batting average under .230 and 120+ strikeouts a season. Dunn's .obp with the Sox has not been good enough. However, I believe he does have the 2nd highest .obp on the team and made like the 3rd fewest outs on the team last season. Every season there is a chance that Dunn will lead the league in homers, walks, and strikeouts. I would take that every time from him. If Dunn finishes his deal with the Sox the overall 4 year product will still be characterized as a disappointment. Even after probably 125+ homers in a Sox uniform all because of that 1st season. Is he overpaid? Yes. As a free agent though I still think Dunn gets a 2 year deal at $10 per season. What he offers a team is very valuable. He just should not be expected to be a team's best player. Obviously, I meant $10 million per season.
  21. QUOTE (Noonskadoodle @ Jul 18, 2013 -> 02:38 PM) If the Orioles got Dunn.... They would be scary, but I see them going after possibly more pitching. Wonder if Oakland could be interested? Although Mr Moneyball resides there. Exactly. Mr. Moneyball would have loved Dunn in his prime. He was the epitome of a perfect Billy Beane player. Homers, walks, and tons of runs scored while ignoring the strikeouts. Oakland would need a ton of money to obtain Dunn though. That is the problem.
  22. QUOTE (greg775 @ Jul 18, 2013 -> 02:25 PM) Any stat that says Adam Dunn is a good hitter has to be questioned. If he's a good hitter, why aren't teams lining up to acquire him? I'd be shocked if he doesn't just retire after the current contract expires or play for pennies. I want people on the record on this topic. Does anybody else think Adam Dunn is a "good hitter?" I say NO. I don't know how to answer this. 23. QUOTE (thxfrthmmrs @ Jul 18, 2013 -> 10:10 AM) Can someone explain why the Cardinals are in the lottery. On paper it says the 10 smallest market teams, and the 10 lowest revenue teams can participate, but the Cardinals, who is 6th in attendance last year, got a pick as well. Are they considered a small market team? I am just a little baffle. Everyone is baffled by it. Keith Law was hammering the system on twitter last night as well as many others. Oakland didn't even get a pick. It's a joke.

QUOTE (Rowand44 @ Jul 17, 2013 -> 09:23 PM) Wish there were some better looking girls but The Challenge is damn entertaining. Yes it is. I feel like the Zach and Trey team is unfair in anything physical. Guys can always get over whatever issues they had to win money. Trey is really athletic and good at things and Zach is just a freak. They will be a tough out.
  25. QUOTE (CWSpalehoseCWS @ Jul 17, 2013 -> 11:31 PM) I hate to play this game, but the Sox then traded Frasor for Webb and Jaye, both of whom look pretty damn good this year. So it may not be as bad of a trade as it seems. I still think trading Hudson for Jackson was worse than what the 2nd Jackson trade brought back; even including Hudson's 2 injuries. Completely agree. I didn't hate the 1st Jackson deal because they traded Hudson. I hated it because I thought they could have gotten so much more for Daniel Hudson and David Holmberg.
