QUOTE (southsider2k5 @ Nov 6, 2012 -> 09:59 AM) In search of the next Quintana or Veal? http://www.baseballamerica.com/blog/prospe...ee-agents-2012/ I know I am Captain Obvious with this but those were two very sweet signings. I liked the Veal one at the time but didn't know much about Quintana.

2012-2013 MLB off season tracker thread

Today is the start of the GM Meeting. While they aren't as active as the winter meetings, things still get done there. I believe that Santos deal last year and the Garcia for Floyd/Gio was also done at the GM Meetings. -

QUOTE (danman31 @ Nov 3, 2012 -> 11:25 AM) I saw Aaron Bailey play last night. It was his first game back since spraining his knee midseason. He can run, but he wasn't impressive through the air. I don't know how much of that was rust though. They don't really let him throw very often. With what Illinois has I would bet that he plays a lot as a Frosh net year. However, if he has aspirations to make a career out of football it will be at a different position. He had plenty of offers to attend better football schools but they would not commit to him playing QB. He is a brick s***house though. If you went to the game not knowing who he was you would assume he was their MLB. Real good kid too. -
QUOTE (greg775 @ Nov 2, 2012 -> 01:38 PM) I think the Sox would be doing handstands in joy if somebody would take Dunn and his contract off the Sox hands. Do you all at least agree on that? I always thought Bulls fans were generally the dumbest in Chicago. Comments like this make me think otherwise. Enjoy Dan Johnson starting DH.

QUOTE (bucket-of-suck @ Nov 2, 2012 -> 03:10 AM) Asking price for Headley is atronomical. Talks would begin and end with Sale. If that's the case then I would bet that Headley stays with SD. They would have to accept less than that from someone, especially with teams knowing that they want to play Gyorko at 3B at some point.

QUOTE (SOXOBAMA @ Nov 2, 2012 -> 10:14 AM) Jon Heyman @JonHeymanCBS #cubs and #redsox among teams in on Dan Haren trade talks. north siders a new entry. If the Cubs got Haren they would bank on him being good and receiving a prospect or two at the deadline for him. Probably not a bad move for a team that has $$ to spend on a rebuilding effort. -
Sox organizational meetings this weekend

QUOTE (elrockinMT @ Nov 2, 2012 -> 10:38 AM) Be interesting to see if we the fans get any info after the meetings concerning team priorities I'd rather not have any of the information and have them do their jobs well. It will be curious to see if info is generally as secretive with Hahn in charge. Obviously, the Youkilis move was talked about forever but Liriano and Myers fit the old MO. All of a sudden there were tweets and those players were on the White Sox. I wonder if that will change at all. -
QUOTE (Dick Allen @ Nov 2, 2012 -> 09:03 AM) He shouldn't be batting 3rd, and if you think Adam Dunn is worth $15 million a year, you should be an agent. I am assuming you would have Rios bat 3rd then correct? Dunn was on base 220 times in 649 PA's. He made 429 outs on the season. Hit 41 homers and walked 108 times. Rios was on base 219 times in 640 PA's. He made 421 outs on the season. Rios had 184 hits and walked 29 times. Dunn on the other hand only had 110 hits. This is where the walks and HR's come into play. Dunn had a down year and his OBP and OPS were way down. But he still was on base about as much as Rios.

QUOTE (Dick Allen @ Nov 2, 2012 -> 07:48 AM) If you pay someone $15 million a year, the thought is for him to do the damage, not try leave it up to someone else. If it doesn't translate into runs, its a pretty meaningless event. Not all walks are created equal. If you think with the same line ups if every player walked the exact same time Adam Dunn walked, the runs created would be the same, I think you're way off. You can get hung up Dunn's walks all you want, but the truth is for most slow footed guys, walks aren't nearly as productive as they are for others. Not that they are totally unproductive, but Adam Dunn walking 105 times isn't nearly as valuable as say Alejandro De Aza walking 105 times. \ Did it bother you when Frank Thomas did it? Frank would frequently take a walk instead of driving in a run. I suppose Frank should have been giving himself up to drive and drive in the runs?

QUOTE (greg775 @ Nov 1, 2012 -> 01:49 PM) I don't personally hate Dunn and don't sense hatred per se on here. He contributed to a lot of wins last year, both halves. I'm thinking he stunk down the stretch as did most of our players/pitchers. I just don't like his style. I never understood why these big brutes never try to hit to all fields. That shift victimized him a lot. And personally his strikeouts are annoying. I don't hate him and applaud him for his game winning type hits last year but I wish he'd go far away. Do you think flyouts, groundouts, line outs, pop outs, etc are annoying as well? Go and research how many players on the Sox committed more outs than Dunn. You'll most likely find the data quite interesting.

2012-2013 Sox off season Catch-All thread

Does anyone think the Sox will sniff around Ichiro again? What about a guy like Grady Sizemore? Sizemore has been destroyed by injuries, but if he didn't cost anything, Id consider taking a shot. -
QUOTE (oldsox @ Nov 1, 2012 -> 09:53 AM) Who would want him at $28 large over 2 yrs? The Dunn hate is and always will be mind boggling to me. The White Sox should trade Dunn and then what? They would be looking for another LH power bat to replace him with. Some of the people that post on this board don't deserve to see a winning team. Dunn's .OBP was down last year and he will always strike out a ton. But 40 + HR's annually and over 100 walks is something that is not given enough credit on this board and in most places. People need to get over the fact that their eyes tell them that a strikeout is the worst thing in the world. All the bad players that have come through town and people hate the guy that will end his career near 600 homers.

QUOTE (Lillian @ Nov 1, 2012 -> 09:54 AM) Moustakas would be a great addition, and provide a left handed bat, but I suspect that it would take a lot more than Gavin Floyd to get him. He is still very young and has tremendous potential, and of course, he will be cost controlled for a few more years, which makes him very attractive. Did I miss the news somewhere that KC wanted to deal Moustakas? Why would they trade him? Hosmer, Butler, Myers, and Moustakas is a nice group to build around. And they have more coming. Not to mention Perez. Was it mentioned somewhere that they would deal Moose for pitching because of the depth on offense?

QUOTE (greg775 @ Oct 27, 2012 -> 11:55 PM) Cool Immy. Can Benet beat Oswego? Do u like Benet's team? Benet is pretty good. 7A is an absolute b****, but they should get past Oswego. -
QUOTE (Jake @ Oct 26, 2012 -> 01:57 PM) The same information that is available to everyone else. That KW has been a GM for more than a decade and has won many more trades than he has lost. I have no reason to believe that a completely inexperienced Rick Hahn will be effective at the myriad of things that go into working out a trade. The stuff today has made it completely unclear to me who has control. It does seem that to some extent JR probably wants to get further away from personnel decisions and is probably going to give KW some of the veto power that JR once held. I think it is fairly clear who has the control. Hahn takes over the day to day operations and will be in charge. KW gets to do a lot more scouting and development type stuff along with Team President type things. Obviously, Kenny will have input on major trades but that was to be expected. I like the analytical shift in philosophy that I think Hahn has though.

Sox Blogger Call: Open Discussion with Brooks Boyer
Y2Jimmy0 replied to NorthSideSox72's topic in Pale Hose Talk
Q: How many fans in the survey talked about the on-field product – the team performance? How big a deal was that? Brooks: A year ago, I would have said it had to be near the top… but as it turns out, in the survey, team performance didn’t even make the top 4. Fans said they’d rather see a team that is competitive and fun and plays hard, represents the fan base well, than one that wins but doesn’t deliver those other things. Surprising but true. Obviously it was mentioned in some surveys, and obviously it is a big part of things, but not as big as they thought it would be. I still have to think that winning does matter. The White Sox were in 1st place when this survey was given. It's pretty tough for those fans to use the winning excuse when the team is in 1st place. I'd like to see if it would be in the top 4 when the team is bad. -
In typical KW fashion, will his big offseason move be A-Rod?
Y2Jimmy0 replied to caulfield12's topic in Pale Hose Talk
QUOTE (Steve9347 @ Oct 17, 2012 -> 11:17 AM) He won't snag A-Rod, but I guarantee he tries to get Ichiro. Yeah I thought the same thing. Kenny tried to get Ichiro this year. Of course he will try again. -
QUOTE (greg775 @ Oct 16, 2012 -> 04:10 PM) That's probably a pretty good point. I know when I go to a game I don't wanna sit in the upper tank. Hey here's a good one for you. I have some friends coming up from Chicago to go to the Kansas-Texas football game. No way I am going to pay money for Kansas football tickets for god sakes with the stands half full. So my rich car dealer, a very nice guy, gave me four tickets for the game. I looked at the ticket and they are 80 bucks a pop. Can you imagine??? Kansas football. 80 bucks a ticket. My car dealer gave me 320 bucks of goods for free. Nice guy, but my god, how could anybody pay 80 bucks to go see a Kansas football game!? When I go I usually sit in the Upper Deck. I love getting seats on stub hub for the first couple rows behind home plate in the UD. The seats are good and the Burrito stand and Import beers stand is right by the seats.

QUOTE (The Ultimate Champion @ Oct 16, 2012 -> 09:03 AM) Also, if I'm Kenny and I'm thinking about possibly moving Viciedo in a big deal for a right-handed ace, I'm going under the radar and targeting Brandon Morrow. Love the Brandon Morrow idea. Problem is, I think Toronto is going to add rather than subtract. I would not be surprised if Toronto is still where Floyd ends up.

QUOTE (Paint it Black @ Oct 15, 2012 -> 06:53 PM) I worked for the Cougars in High School. I admit I'm not a marketing expert, but most people who go to those games are people with small kids who can let them run around without any hassle (hell it's why my dad took me to so many games there as a kid). Also, the Cougars do a ton of business with corporate events/parties. I can't tell you how many guests we had ask me "Hey who are the Cougars affiliated with" or "Who they playing tonight" followed up with "who are they affiliated with." I also ask this, the White Sox have not had a great track record of developing talents recently, nor do they particular draft well OR sign a ton of international talent. How the hell are you going to make any new fans out in the western burbs if you really are not sending good talent there? And that all assumes that people going to Cougars game pay attention. I guess I just don't see any Cub fans or someone who doesn't follow baseball suddenly become a White Sox fan because the low A affiliate is playing in their backyard. With that said, my parents still live out in St. Charles and I would go to tons of games if the White Sox were involved, but I would consider myself pretty diehard. I understand your point but it could sway a young fan in my opinion. I have White Sox and Cubs fans in my family. I could have gone either way. When I was a kid, Frank Thomas came up. I am a White Sox fan because of Frank Thomas. What if a guy like Courtney Hawkins is awesome. If the Sox affilaite was in say Schaumburg, it is possible that a young kid could reasonably have Hawkins (or any other spect) as his/her favorite player. I know that isnt a scenario that is extremely common but it is reasonable.

Earlier in the thread people were talking about trading one of the bad OBP guys. Can Carlos Sanchez play SS? Will he hit enough? If the Sox could get a nice return for Alexei, is it worth it to go with Sanchez and save money to re-sign guys?

QUOTE (flippedoutpunk @ Oct 15, 2012 -> 06:03 PM) The sox need to appeal to the sometimes annoying casual baseball fan if they want to sell close to 30k a night. This is where the Cubs are so successful. Im guilty of having gone to more Cubs games this season than Sox games, and I get tickets free with my military I.D. with the Sox. I hate how after a white sox winner theres nothing left to do except take the red line home and hope to Allah that no one notices my iPhone and tries to rob me of my prized possessions. The Cubs games you get a chance to watch the great game of baseball (played not so greatly) and look forward to post-game festivities with some exploration of the rest of wrigleyville if you please. I have an easier time convincing friends and family to go with me to a Cubs game than a Sox game for this reason. I am the opposite of this. Living in the SW Burbs, I love just getting in my car after the game and heading home. I have never once felt threatened right near US Cellular Field either. Im not opposed to going to Wrigley but the food at the cell is better and its a hell of a lot easier to get there.

QUOTE (Marty34 @ Oct 14, 2012 -> 11:38 AM) The Yankees not selling out postseason games and the Sox attendance problems have a lot in common. Both teams have old cores that their fans have tired of. In other words, it's time to find good young players. BTW, the Jets game against the Texans Monday night had higher ratings than the Yankees/O's playoff game locally. Of course it did. It's the NFL. I would recommend baseball only have playoff games on Tuesday, Wednesday, Friday and Saturday if they want to win the ratings.
