  1. QUOTE (NorthSideSox72 @ May 22, 2013 -> 08:56 AM) And in this case, that is fine. I think if they had demoted him based purely on performance, going A+ to A, would not have made any sense. But he's been out of play for a while now. And I'll throw this out there, TIFWIW... reading his Twitter account, seeing his quotes in interviews... I have makeup concerns with him right now. Maturity issues, principally. Not unexpected for a 19 year old 1st rounder, but, I think he's got some learning to do. And that will have as much effect on him as any mechanical issues. Not sure if going to Kannapolis is the right move though. Maybe he goes there and dominates and fixes what ails him by gaining more confidence. OTOH, he could go down there and keep the same bad habits while still dominating and never fixing his flaws. I know the strikeout rate in Winston-Salem is awful but I think the idea is that the struggles in WS will cause him to change and fix the strikeout issues. I don't have the answer. Just throwing it out there.
  2. QUOTE (Noonskadoodle @ May 23, 2013 -> 08:59 AM) FARRRRR from it. You honestly think the way he managed the pen yesterday was fine? Running Omo FREAKIN grosso out there for TWO innings in a 1 run game? Letting him load the bases up before going to get him after he already allowed 2 guys aboard the previous inning. Then you have a guy in Lindstrom who has been getting ground balls consistently all season out of the pen who you could bring in when in that bases loaded situation, but instead you bring in a guy who throws one of the straightest fastballs in the game? I am one who usually backs RV & tries to defend him when ppl get on him, but I couldn't believe what I was watching last night. & to say it didn't matter the Sox only scored 2 runs.....really?....you knew they were only gonna score 2 runs in the 7th inning? Using Omogrosso for a 2nd inning was fine. Whatever. How about this concept: Score some runs and it won't matter. Buchholz was awesome last night. Tip the cap.
  3. No Hamilton today and Pujols go to DH. Dan Hayes ‏@DanHayesCSN 53m Angels with a new lineup minus Hamilton: Aybar SS, Trout CF, Pujols DH, Trumbo RF, Kendrick 2B, Callaspo 3B, Harris 1B, Iannetta C, Shuck LF
  4. QUOTE (southsider2k5 @ May 18, 2013 -> 02:25 PM) Sorry Bilek, if the Sox win, the person who made that game thread, keeps making them until the team loses. Soxtalk tradition. I am sure that will be the reason if the Sox lose. I posted in the other thread. Wasted my time I guess.
  5. QUOTE (fathom @ May 18, 2013 -> 01:52 PM) Greene and Wells I like Wells vs LHP but that's probably the move. Do we get a straight RL platoon at 3B with Keppinger and Gillaspie then do you think?
  6. Scott Merkin ‏@scottmerkin 14m If things go well for John Danks tonight in Buffalo, look for him to start Friday against the Marlins at home Merkin also mentioned that Robin and the staff discussed a 6 man rotation and it sounds unlikely. Merkin thinks that the rotation will be Peavy and the 4 lefties. What does this do to Axelrod? Does he become the long man with Omogrosso going back to Charlotte? Also, Beckham and Angel Sanchez should be back within a week as well. Who goes down or gets DFA'd to make room?
  7. Guys is there any consensus on how much say KW will have on the draft? I know that he has been doing a lot of scouting this year. In past years, I would have thought that if Stanford OF Austin Wilson is available, he would automatically be the pick. Now they could go in any direction and it wouldn't shock me. I would be excited if they took Wilson. I loved him coming out of HS and Stanford hitters notoriously have questions because of that coaching staff there. What does the board think about if Wilson was the pick at #17?
  8. QUOTE (fathom @ May 16, 2013 -> 12:10 PM) Keith Law has a mock draft up also, but I'm not an ESPN insider. Keith Law has the Sox taking Jacksonville RHP Chris Anderson. 6'4 225 lbs. Law mentions that he has also heard the Sox linked to Gonzaga LHP Marco Gonzales but mentions that it seems too early to take him.
  9. QUOTE (KyYlE23 @ May 15, 2013 -> 01:46 PM) Span I will give you, but Revere wasnt expensive. The guy has only been in the majors a few years, they had a few arb years left, FA in 2018. he is only making 515K right now Revere was not expensive. He did have a .313 bop though and did not walk very much. With the glut of OF's in their system, they wanted the pitching.
  10. QUOTE (witesoxfan @ May 15, 2013 -> 11:33 AM) That's a silly question to ask. Is Chris Sale going to be on the team the next time the Sox win the World Series? Probably not, so let's trade him. Matt Adams has a .858 OPS in his career. He also has only been up to the plate 126 times. He has 8 walks and 30 strikeouts. None of these are popping out to me, and the only thing that does is that he's inflated his numbers due to 35 plate appearances this year. He put up solid numbers in the minors, but nothing that indicates to me that he is going to be even an .850 OPS bat. .298/.373/.503/.876, 20 homers, 50 walks, 85 strikeouts, 23 years old, split between AA and AAA (Int'l League) .300/.357/.566/.923, 32 homers, 40 walks, 90 strikeouts, 22 years old, only done in AA. These are Matt Adams' numbers. The first player then played the next 2 years in the PCL and put up an OPS around .950 with better strikeout and walk numbers...and Soxtalk collectively freaked out because Brandon Allen was going to be the next big thing. He's now in his 5th MLB organization and 6th organization overall (as he spent a small amount of time in Japan too). So would I trade Alexei Ramirez, a guy who is a top 3 defensive shortstop who shows good contact ability, straight up for a 1B prospect who could very easily be a dime a dozen AAAA? No chance in hell. I'd consider dealing Ramirez to the Cardinals at some point in time, but it's going to cost them more than Matt Adams, that's for goddamn sure. If Chris Sale isn't on their next World Series team then what are we doing here? The goal should be to get back to the World Series. It's a failure otherwise. If they aren't going back within the next 6 years while Sale is here then they may as well trade everyone like Marty is suggesting.
  11. QUOTE (Y2JImmy0 @ May 15, 2013 -> 11:19 AM) Again, I will ask the question. Would you trade Ramirez straight up right now for Mike Adams? If the answer is no then that is lunacy. I want the better asset. Young power hitting 1B who is cost controlled for the next 6 years is more valuable to this team than a 32 year old SS with a bad contract who gets on base at a .300 clip. I like Ramirez but lets not be crazy here. Is Alexei Ramirez going to be on the team the next time the Sox win the World Series? Probably not. Obviously, I meant Matt Adams.
  12. QUOTE (witesoxfan @ May 15, 2013 -> 11:15 AM) You're right, Flowers to shortstop! As a fan, I care who plays shortstop. I really don't think there are many logical candidates out there to play SS right now who will be available this offseason who are better than Alexei. Again, I will ask the question.
  13. QUOTE (southsider2k5 @ May 15, 2013 -> 10:09 AM) Are you ready for the Jeff Keppinger or Tyler Greene era? So does this mean you wouldn't trade Ramirez for Matt Adams?
  14. QUOTE (Jordan4life @ May 15, 2013 -> 09:57 AM) Matt Adams has been mentioned about thirty times in this thread. Is there anything more to this other than it being fathom's unrealistic fantasy? The Sox could never swindle the Cardinals like that. Probably not. He doesn't really have a full time spot for them though.
  15. QUOTE (KyYlE23 @ May 15, 2013 -> 08:45 AM) It isnt as if Rizzo has a Soriano albatross contract. It is a long contract, and he is paid well but not outlandish. It will most likely work out for both sides I look at the Ryan Howard deal. If I recall correctly, Howard made south of $1 million for 3 straight years. He was then awarded upwards of $11 million for the nect 3 years in salary arbitration. Rizzo's arb numbers could be fairly high if he's as good as they think. It's a no brainer for the Cubs.
  16. QUOTE (Steve9347 @ May 14, 2013 -> 05:04 PM) I'm still confused as to why the collusion that resulted from the whole San Diego being f***ed by two buddies goes unpunished. Was San Diego going to play Rizzo as a DH? They like Yonder Alonso better in that ballpark. Also, Andrew Cashner has looked pretty damn good so far this year. Granted, it was a deal made between friends but it wasn't completely lopsided.
  17. QUOTE (TaylorStSox @ May 15, 2013 -> 09:19 AM) If we trade Ramirez, who plays SS? Can Carlos Sanchez play SS? I have no idea. But if you could make that trade you'd make it. Adams is a potential middle of the order impact bat for the next 5-8 years. It's just more valuable.
  18. Dishing out money in the offseason to Curtis Granderson and Brian McCann sounds like a realistic option to me. Let's just pretend that the Sox could get Matt Adams for Ramirez as well. If the Sox added Granderson, McCann, and Adams to their offense, they'd be able to compete with the pitching that they have. They need to spend some $$ though. The pitching is too good to completely tear it down in my opinion. Peavy, Sale, Quintana, Danks, Santiago, Axelrod, and Erik Johnson is some nice depth. You could even afford to deal one of Quintana/Santiago to acquire some offense.
  19. QUOTE (southsider2k5 @ May 9, 2013 -> 09:58 AM) The Sox don't pick HS pitchers. Yeah they usually don't. Hadn't taken HS bats in the 1st round either in awhile until last year. I saw the Sox linked to Matt Smoral a lot last year as well. This may be changing. I just don't think it's a good idea to always pass on HS pitchers because you missed on Kris Honel.
  20. QUOTE (fathom @ May 3, 2013 -> 09:31 PM) Non-Sox, but Appel is pitching on espnu right now. He looks fantastic. I don't think the Cubs pass on Appel. He could be up and in their rotation by mid season next year.
  21. The Sox have no choice but to do the half and half rebuild/retool thing. I have seen good points on here though. I don't think they trade Rios or Peavy unless they are blown away by an offer. OTOH, some of the bullpen pieces should be shopped and dealt away (Crain, Thornton, Lindstrom). I would even trade Konerko if you could get something back in return. De Aza should be available and I would deal Ramirez for a good return as well. The surplus of pitching is nice as well as the intriguing starts by Erik Johnson and Chris Beck. If the Sox added McCann, Morales types in the offseason and made one big trade including one of the young pitchers (Quintana) with Beckham and more, they could compete next year. They would have a better offense and a rotation that includes Sale, Danks, Peavy, Santiago/Quintana, and hopefully Erik Johnson. It could work. I would be on board with the full blown rebuild but many would not be. It's probably not possible with this fanbase.
  22. QUOTE (caulfield12 @ May 5, 2013 -> 12:17 AM) http://www.chicagotribune.com/sports/baseb...0,2019906.story Wonder if he becomes a superstar or the next Prior? Last time they took a PAC-10 pitcher in the first 2 picks...worked beautifully and then, well... You can't worry about that. I think if Appel is on the board, he should be the pick. He could be in the Cubs rotation as early as next season. I would not be surprised to see the Cubs with a rotation of David Price, Samardjiza, and Appel next season.
  23. QUOTE (The Ginger Kid @ May 5, 2013 -> 09:28 PM) Funny but this is when I miss ozzies candor. He would absolutely call out this terrible defense. And someone Ozzie "calling out" the terrible defense would make it better? I think not.
  24. Now it's all a moot point because Santiago will most likely be taking Floyd's spot in the rotation for the rest of the season.
