Are White Sox fans being "silly" thinking we are going to get Harper?
Other than Nola & Hoskins, they haven’t developed much. They just have more of their young guys already on the roster, whereas we have a signicant amount of reinforcements coming. I’d agree they are ahead of us, but not substantially.

Yankees sign Adam Ottavino: 3yr/27m
I agree with bmags, I’m not sure enough of the young relievers showed enough to be handed spots next year. I have no problem of adding one more high-end guy. For example, Ottavino, Colome, Jones, & Fry could make up a pretty nice back-end of a bullpen. That let’s you ease Hamilton & Frare (or Bummer) into high leverage situations. If those young guys prove they’re capable of taking on more important roles, you suddenly have some veteran relievers to trade. If not, the next set of young arms get an opportunity. To me, that’s the best way for us to develop a bullpen.

Sox trade with Rangers?
If he’s a free agent in 2021, then you’d only get two years of control out of him. And quite frankly, he’s going to cost way too much prospect currency to make sense for us.

Update per Heyman: White Sox one of 3 teams meeting Machado
And based on rumors, he doesn’t even have a huge market. I think the Sox & Phillies would both prefer to play him at 3B. The Yankees could probaly go either way depending on when Didi returns. At pthis point, Machado demanding he play SS could cost him money if it scares off even one team. I really don’t think he has the leverage to make a demand like that.

I don’t think we know for sure that he’s dead-set on playing. I know I personally think that was to increase his market and he’ll go wherever the money is now, but that’s just my speculation.

Yankees sign Adam Ottavino: 3yr/27m
Lol...I convinced myself that Ottavino is the real deal after reading that Fangraphs about what he did last offseason and now want him. But Hahn specifically mentioned Colome in his comments, saying they valued the flexibility he provides by only being guaranteed one year but potentially having two years of control.

Yankees sign Adam Ottavino: 3yr/27m
Hahn made some comments recently that suggested it was a year too early to add a reliever that will require a long-term deal. I guess we’ll see if there’s any truth to that, but I’m starting to think Ottavino isn’t a real possibility.

I would certainly offer him less if he was adamant on playing SS.

Update per Heyman: White Sox one of 3 teams meeting Machado
We aren’t his team, so he has no obligation to sign with us to play a position he doesn’t want to play. That doesn’t make him selfish in the slightest. That’s like calling a guy who wants to close selfish for not signing with a team that wants him to be a setup man. Also, didn’t he play some 3B for the Dodgers down the stretch? This borderline hatred some people on the board have for Machado is simply bizarre IMO.

Update per Heyman: White Sox one of 3 teams meeting Machado
Lopez wore down significantly as the season moved along? Did you even watch him last year? His best month was far & away September and his second best was August. He was a much improved pitcher down the stretch. He was also was 24 years old in his first major league season. To suggest he might ultimately be a bullpen guy based on his 2018 performance is quite frankly ridiculous.

100% agree. Our organization is completely irrelevant both nationally & locally. We need to do something to put us on the map and reinvigorate the fanbase. Investing in Harper not only improves our chances of winning, but gives us the star power this franchise has been lacking since an in his prime Frank Thomas. If that means we have to pay a premium above what his on-field production suggests then that’s the cost of doing business. Like you said Dick, a Harper addition will pay for itself.

And the whole reason we had to rebuild in the first place is we lacked guys who could provide 2 to 3 WAR seasons. Our system should be deep enough now to provide players like that. What we need on top of that is star level players. Not using our financial flexibility to add a player like that, even if it would be a slight overpay, would be incredibly short-sighted.

Seems like you care more about surplus value than actually winning baseball games. They’re also 26 years old and just entering their prime. You are paying fthem for their future production and not what they’ve done in the past.
