Always take the BPA early in the draft. If we need a starting pitching in 2020, we can either go out and sign one or use some of our prospect currency to acquire one.
-
The situation is somewhat similar, although I think Rodon was a far superior prospect than Singer ever was. And even without those issues, Mize would have passed Singer as the premier prospect in the draft.
-
Same draft, but I’m far more worried we pull a Fulmer with our Happ right there for the taking. I continue to have a bad feeling that we’ll have our choice of Madrigal & Singer, go with the pitcher, and the Reds immediately take Nick at #5 and together they live happily ever after. Speaking of the 2015 draft, I’m not sure there is better evidence to go position player when picking early: Dansby Swanson Alex Bregman Brendan Rodgers Dillon Tate Kyle Tucker Tyler Jay Andrew Benintendi Carson Fulmer Ian Happ I know it’s one draft, but every team that picked a position player is happy right now (maybe not Arizona lol) and those that picked pitchers are probably filled with great regret. I get the top guys in this draft might not be of the same caliber overall, but I still feel there is far more certainty with Madrigal & Bohm than a second tier pitcher like Singer. Pitching is just too risky to take that high unless it’s of the elite variety.

Just over 34 hours until the draft starts. Can’t fucking wait.
-
That’s exactly the type of offensive profile I’m envisioning and that’s a hell of a player when you factor in his defense.

Dam, you’re one of my favorite posters on this board and I respected your initial position on this topic, but now it just seems like you’re willing to give this guy free passes all around all in the name of value. I think it’s perfectly reasonable for people to not want to touch this guy with a 10 foot pole, just as I think an argument can be made for giving the guy a second chance. I’m fine with you wanting to select him, I just think it feels a bit cheap to presume his innocence as a reason why.
-
But when you have all the evidence to prove your innocence why are you even worried about jail, especially as a minor? And I’m not even suggesting that he’s without question guilty, I just think it’s odd that someone would say all the evidence suggests he’s innocent but he still took a plea. More than anything I’m just curious about what that evidence is to better educate myself on the case.
-
Calling someone a meathead because they don’t want to draft someone who at bare minimum pleaded guilty to molesting a six year old child seems a bit egregious.
-
Not when they have overwhelming evidence that suggests they are innocent.
-
Not to derail this thread any further, but what is all this evidence that suggests he is innocent and why did he ever accept a plea deal if so much favorable evidence existed?
-
Then why do you think most organizations will pass on him? Is everyone blowing this out of proportion? Right or wrong, all I know is I’m the father of three young children and I would be unable to cheer or support him. He’s obviously no threat to my children and may be a completely different person, but I’m unable to overlook his actions regardless of the reasons. And I know many others on this board feel the same way. I’m all for second chances in life, but this one area people typically can’t be rational about and I fully admit I’m guilty of that. But I’m less concerned about fan outrage and far more worried about the clubhouse impacts. There will be teammates who will not want this dude around and that’s where problems could arise IMO.
-
Dam, you’re trying to be objective here and I can respect that, but most people aren’t going to care about recidivism rates and I think you’re making a bit of a leap assuming he was an abused child himself even if that’s what research & statistics would suggest. The fact is he abused a six year old girl multiple times when he was 16 years old. Whether you think he’s a changed man or not, the vast majority of his teammates and fans will think otherwise or simply will be unable to overlook what he did. I really think you’re asking for trouble adding someone like him and I this draft will be proof of that.
-
Who’s your top four right now fathom?
-
He deserves a chance to pursue a MLB career, but at the same time front offices deserve the right to not draft players they feel have character flaws or provide risk to their organization.
-
Because I think it’s a very bad idea to add someone with that type of baggage into a baseball clubhouse. I think many players would have issues with him and it’s simply not worth the trouble. Despite his value there is a reason most if not all teams are going to pass on him.
-
I want nothing to do with Heimlich, but he should have no baring on our draft strategy regardless. Draft Madrigal for the reasons you mentioned, not because someone comparable to Singer with significant baggage might be available later in the draft.
-
Agreed. If he hadn’t taken that liner off his head he probably wouldn’t need another minor league start, but that obviously was going to set him back.

Nick Hostetler Draft History
Chicago White Sox replied to Chicago White Sox's topic in FutureSox Board
I thought Hostetler said he had some high school guys in the 3rd round they were targeting but they all got scooped right before their pick and they ended up going with Gonzalez. Looking at the draft results, six high schoolers went in the first 11 picks of the 3rd round: Enlow, Hearherly, House, Tarnok, Allen, & Pearson. I honestly can’t recall if we were connected to any those guys. -

Here’s a quote from Hostetler on Sheets shortly after the draft: “We were sweating a few picks. We weren’t sure he would get to us. Contact with the agent finally got him to us, and we were very happy about it.” Seems like they were targeting him all along (pretty sure they said they had a 1st round grade on him) and threw his agent an overslot offer to block some of the teams ahead of them from selecting him. -
Aren’t we allowed to go over by like 5% or has that amount changed under the new CBA? I mean, I would be pretty disappointed if we didn’t at least use all our base bonus pool.

Burdi has three plus pitches including a legit 80 grade fastball. He has a chance to be the best reliever in baseball IMO. I’m a huge fan of Hamilton & Johnson, but they are simply not on the same level as Burdi.

Sounds like they kind of pushed him to their spot, but still seems odd to me. -

It will be interesting to see how Abbott develops this year. Will obviously take some time with him given his water polo background, but the system desperately needs more wild cards like him. In fact, looking back at these three drafts, the biggest issue I have is not selecting enough high school guys. I really hope that changes with this year’s draft. Even just three legit high school picks would be a nice change of pace.
