Manaea to Padres, Sox were in on him
Luzardo had a 5+ FIP for the Marlins

Luzardo??

Manaea to Padres, Sox were in on him
I wouldn’t worry about payroll salary since that includes a straight lined portion of his signing bonus.

Manaea to Padres, Sox were in on him
Guaranteed money is only $1M different, but the CBT and cash impact is quite bit less for this year.

Rockies @ Whitesox - NBCSCH 3:05
I would have thought the same, but he was consistently batting Harrison 7th before the Pollock trade.

Manaea to Padres, Sox were in on him
I think we have close to $20M in CBT space, I think the bigger concern is cash payroll, but we did open up some with the Kimbrel trade.

Rockies @ Whitesox - NBCSCH 3:05
He was batting below Harrison before the injury though

I have a feeling this is going to annoy for a good part of the season.

That may be the plan, but it’s a huge risk to go with what got now. I really hope Hahn has an ace up his sleeve here.

Manaea to Padres, Sox were in on him
Oh I’m not saying they should have traded those two, just saying there was a way to get a deal done if the Sox were compelled to. Not sure where they go to from here if they’re unwilling to trade Vaughn or tap into multiple pieces at the very top end of the system.

That’s what they’re doing, unfortunately it takes time though and the pandemic really fucked over the first wave in Thompson & Dalquist. Hopefully they and Kelly can rebound this year because we invested a ton in those three kids.

Baseball America has a 45 FV grade on the kid the Padres gave up, while Montgomery & Kath are 55 FV guys and Popeye is a 50 FV. I know their valuations aren’t the end all be all, but Montgomery at minimum is a far superior prospect IMO. Now, Popeye is probably a fair comp, although he’s already proven himself at a level higher and I’d like to think that makes him a little bit more valuable. Regardless, this wasn’t a massive package like some were speculating and it’s one we could have beaten. Let’s say Popeye is off the table, I still think something like Ramos + Thompson would arguably be a better combo than what the A’s got here and still provided them with youth (although they haven’t been entirely focused on younger prospects in their trades).

Yeah, luckily most GMs don’t just leverage stat lines from a rookie season when evaluating young players and will consider scouting reports, prospect pedigree, development time, etc to develop their own go-forward projections.

In my opinion, the Sox could have easily beaten this if they wanted to. And it’s very clear they’re aware that they need another starter. As such, perhaps there is a different starting pitcher they are close on? Obviously Montas is an option, but the Reds still have Castillo & Mahnle. The problem there is you’re probably talking Vaughn or bust, although the Reds didn’t exactly get a haul for two years of Gray.

Why the Sox should NOT trade for Sean Manaea
The price was steep?

Lance Lynn has slight tendon tear, 4 weeks no throwing off mound
The Pilkington giveaway? I was one of a handful of people on this board who actually liked Pilkington and even I didn’t have an issue trading him for Hernandez because he was a low floor prospect who would have needed to be protected on the 40 man. I don’t recall you ever complaining once about “giving away” Pilkington when the trade was first made.

And Josh Nelson was saying on Twitter Manaea would cost Colson Montgomery…lol No idea how we couldn’t find a package better than what the Padres gave up here.

Manaea to Padres, Sox were in on him
If Hahn trades Vaughn for Montas then I’m moving to Asheville to get even farther from this god forsaken franchise.

Manaea to Padres, Sox were in on him
Doesn’t seem like something we couldn’t have beaten.

@VAfan - Still feel like we shouldn’t trade for Manaea?

What have you diagnosed him with?

Offseason Part 3 - Because Part 2 Was a Dud
Yeah, kind of important for the Mets to weigh in on a trade involving them
-
Offseason Part 3 - Because Part 2 Was a Dud
So you must hate Pollock & Engel then?
-
Offseason Part 3 - Because Part 2 Was a Dud
I think it’s totally fair to call out Madrigal for his lack of durability, but the kid was a valuable hitter when he played which is the point ChiSox59 was making. It’s silly to say that rate based stats aren’t important.

Not sure I follow.
