I actually thought Brooks Baldwin would end up our CF and was devastated when it was announced he would miss the season. Now we have an All Star CF in Peters and a super interesting guy in Brooks who will struggle to find everyday at-bats. Another awesome problem to have.

That’s true, but also why Lackey was being rumored as an option until the very end.

He’s really good at both spots. Candidly, I think he’s not as good of a defensive SS as OAA suggests (but still really good). As such, I much more open with moving him to 3B. I do hate moving Vargas off of 3B though, but ultimately a great problem to have.

As has been discussed for months, there was a clear top three in this draft and those guys go chalk to kick things off. It appears that all the talk of underslot deals at the top proved to be nothing but plays to drive prices down. And based on these bonus amounts, the agents for Roch, Emerson, & Lackey knew teams were unlikely to pass on the handful of special talents and had the leverage.

He’s incredible at 3B

All the leaks saying otherwise was noise to help build leverage…unfortunately for us it doesn’t seem like it worked.

Ugh that really sucks. Bummer they couldn’t negotiate something south of $10M here.

I think that makes more sense than Thome. College juniors are obviously much harder to float to a specific pick, so makes more sense if there is a college arm they love and were aggressive in increasing their chances in getting him.

Here are today’s slot values: 01) #001 - $11.4M 01) #034 - $2.9M 02) #041 - $2.4M 03) #077 - $1.1M 04) #105 - $0.7M I’d expect at least $1.7M of savings on our first pick. We have $1M from the 5% overage and roughly $0.4M of potential savings if we go seniors with our 9th & 10th round selections. That’s $3.1M of additional dollars to work with. Theoretically, we could allocate $1.4M to our 3rd pick and bump it up to $2.5M and take a very special talent. We could then bump our 4th & 5th round picks to the $1.5M range and get two more additional preps. That’s a six player class plus we’d still have full slot value in the 6th through 8th rounds that could go to college pitching.

Bold prediction, but Sox take Volchko with their second or third pick.
