QUOTE (Y2JImmy0 @ Jan 15, 2016 -> 12:51 PM) 3 year thing doesn't placate fans though It's at least an offer. A true "we tried!"
-
QUOTE (Baron @ Jan 15, 2016 -> 12:47 PM) That doesnt sound like he's saying the White Sox are back in. That just sounds like he's just putting the pieces together with the info from a few weeks ago. Maybe Cespedes would only accept a low year offer from the Mets. Honestly it sounds like a leak from the Sox FO to placate fans. Nightengale is their outlet for that.

QUOTE (SouthSideSale @ Jan 15, 2016 -> 12:43 PM) @BNightengale If Yoenis Cespedes would take 1- 2- or 3-year deal, the #WhiteSox also would be an alternative for the FA outfielder. The three year thing again. Joy. How I missed being reminded that the Sox won't go beyond that magic number.

QUOTE (BlackSox13 @ Jan 15, 2016 -> 08:41 AM) This article kind of makes it sound like Baltimore threw an offer at Cespedes in an attempt to get him on the cheap. Interesting take. http://www.camdenchat.com/2016/1/15/107742...yoenis-cespedes "Making sense of the Orioles interest in Yoenis Cespedes" This is my feeling as well. It's very rare that a national writer will get a leak as detailed as the years and dollar amount. It accomplishes two things for the Orioles IF Davis is truly their focus... 1) The contract offer to Cespedes is a jab at Boras and Davis. It's effectively telling the Davis camp that the Orioles don't have to spend 7/154 to acquire a big bat and there are cheaper alternatives in this market. 2) It stirs up the Cespedes market which might prevent another team from focusing on Davis themselves. Signing Cespedes to a 5/75-90 contract would be feasible for a lot of teams that thought his price tag was 100+ and an attractive alternative to a team that was thinking of beating the Orioles offer to Davis. A third purely speculative motivation is the Orioles might be more interested in Upton than Cespedes as an alternative to Davis and the offer is misdirection.
-
I know the knee-jerk reaction to this news is disappointment, but if you are Hahn and Cespedes and Upton won't budge off of 5+ years and you could get Fowler for possibly 3/40ish...wouldn't you explore it?

Jon Morosi @jonmorosi 3m3 minutes ago Source: #Orioles, #Rockies engaged in "ongoing trade talks" on Colorado outfielders. Rockies have surplus following Parra deal. @FOXSports DO IT!

Everyone else is holding their chips for the big free agents available and Dodgers just quietly doing work on the secondary market. Nicely done.

Jon Heyman @JonHeyman 39m39 minutes ago Tigers have discussed yoenis, j-up, davis, fowler, desmond. Depends on $. may just go for platooner for LF tho (ie rebury) Some fear mongering for all of you who are terrified of the Tigers.

QUOTE (fathom @ Jan 8, 2016 -> 03:06 PM) The best part about the report, if true, is that they're willing to go 4 years I think they've always been willing to go four years. They are just creating leverage for themselves. Offer three, pretend to stick to it, then "cave" and get a deal done.
-
I am not enthused by this news. Don't get me wrong, I would be very excited if we acquired him, but why would we give up top prospects to acquire him rather than just signing Cespedes/Upton? Money. Cargo is signed to a 2/37 million dollar deal and we would need to go far beyond that to land Upton/Cespedes. It just seems cheap to me to voluntarily give up young talent when equal or greater options are available in free agency.
-
QUOTE (SoxPride18 @ Jan 7, 2016 -> 03:33 PM) Well, if true, makes 0 sense. It's no coincidence these tweets are coming from Nightengale and no one else. It's intentional leaks, now the only question is why?
-
QUOTE (caulfield12 @ Jan 7, 2016 -> 10:31 AM) Right, they're paying almost exactly the same as we pay Melky Cabrera to "patrol" LF for the next two seasons. Not really, Melky got three years at 14M AAV for his age 30, 31, and 32 season. Gordon signed for four years at 19M AAV for his age 32, 33, 34, and 35 seasons. Gordon is much better, but they aren't making close to the same salary and Gordon will be much older when his deal runs out.
-
QUOTE (caulfield12 @ Jan 7, 2016 -> 10:15 AM) Lol. The Royals gave Gordon $91 at five years. This just isn't true. Mutual option means mutual (which basically means team), so you can only factor in the 4 million dollar buyout. The only thing that option can be counted on now is the buyout, which is four million. So the real guaranteed money is approximately 4/76.

QUOTE (Dick Allen @ Jan 7, 2016 -> 10:06 AM) How many teams offered Gordon 4 years other than KC? What are the current offers for Cespedes? What are the offers for Upton? What was the Sox best offer for Gordon? If you answered I really don't know to these questions, any whining about the White Sox and how they are NEGOTIATING currently with free agents is premature. +1. Sox aren't going to blow everything else away. Obviously Cespedes and Upton don't have a stack of 5-6 years offers or they would of signed by now. Hahn is trying to take advantage of the market and do the best deal for the team. If the market of those guys progresses to point where Sox need to offer 5-6 years and they don't, then feel free to complain.

Prospect Perspective: Finishing college while playing pro ball
royoung replied to NorthSideSox72's topic in Pale Hose Talk
This is excellent! I am always amazed and very appreciative that prospects would be willing to write guest posts for us. I scouted and met Brad down in Winston-Salem this past August and he is very much a prospect and also a great guy. -
QUOTE (Jose Paniagua @ Jan 6, 2016 -> 03:11 PM) Buster Olney @Buster_ESPN 8s8 seconds ago Theres' been contact between O's & Justin Upton's camp. Matchup makes sense, especially if he goes Nelson Cruz route and takes 1-year deal. I would kick my dog if Upton or Cespedes signed a short "prove it" deal and it wasn't with the Sox. EDIT: I have a really big dog. So he'd be fine. Please don't call PETA

QUOTE (Jose Paniagua @ Jan 6, 2016 -> 02:45 PM) Great stuff in here http://m.mlb.com/news/article/161178212/wh...th-gordon-in-kc I wish any of it was actually based on sources, however, it's Phil Rodgers.

QUOTE (SouthSideSale @ Jan 6, 2016 -> 10:43 AM) Interesting seeing the Orioles tied to Upton after Jesse Sanchez reported White Sox and Orioles were favorites. Sanchez reported Sox and Orioles were favorites for Yo. The Sox need Davis to stop screwing around and take the Orioles money.
-
QUOTE (fathom @ Jan 6, 2016 -> 08:44 AM) Doesn't sound like he ever had real interest in going elsewhere Not sure who was using who...if the Sox were engaging Gordon to drive up the price for KC or if Gordon was just flirting with the Sox to get more from KC...

QUOTE (Frank_Thomas35 @ Jan 6, 2016 -> 08:40 AM) The Royals have reached agreement on a deal that will bring star left fielder Alex Gordon back to Kansas City, MLB.com’s Jeffrey Flanagan reports on Twitter. An official announcement could come later today, assuming Gordon passes his physical. Per MLBTR This Alex Gordon ballgame is Ovah That sucks

QUOTE (ChiSox59 @ Jan 4, 2016 -> 10:41 AM) It is not in the best interest of the Sox to do anything crazy right now. Let the market come to them. No point in offering a 4/$90M deal to Gordon if the next best offer is 4/$70M. Relatively crazy, so to speak. It's been reported Gordon's heart might be in Kansas City, so if Sox really want him, probably would have to beat any Royals offer handily. Since Gordon is the oldest of the three and has the most value tied to his defense, the years is the most important part of his offer than the AAV IMO. For example I would be more pleased with a 3/70 deal with Gordon than say a 4/85 or certainly a 5/100.
-
QUOTE (BlackSox13 @ Jan 4, 2016 -> 10:27 AM) Yes, I think it was along the lines of 4/50-54M IIRC. It might be in the best interest of the Sox to throw some crazy AAV numbers to these guys over a three year deal. After all, a 3-4 year deal would be in line for when the contracts for our core players starts to run out. Abreu (2019), Sale (2019), Quintana (2020), Eaton (2021), and Rodon (2021).
-
QUOTE (NorthSideSox72 @ Jan 4, 2016 -> 10:14 AM) The depth of potentially interesting talent is still good, but that key T10 talent has slid back. Probably why the Sox are excited about those three selections in the first fifty picks of the 2016 draft.
-
QUOTE (Eminor3rd @ Jan 4, 2016 -> 10:03 AM) Unfortunately it's ideal for a lot of teams, Royals included. If Gordon ends up signing for 3/60 with options/opt-outs, I don't think he'll do it with the White Sox. Wasn't the Royals offer 12-13 million per year though?

http://www.baseballamerica.com/minors/chic...p-10-prospects/ Baseball America just released their top ten White Sox prospects for 2016 and they have a shocker at #10.
