For most of my life I had the same name as the pope (although I was born about 10 months before the first one took the name) yet I never got a nickname from it. Only one person every really called me "the pope" but it never stuck.

Go to a Cubs game and convince one of their fans that it's the jersey of some up-and-coming prospect in the minors and sell it for $100.

QUOTE (The Baconator @ Mar 1, 2013 -> 10:35 AM) I lost a bet a while ago and have to wear a cubs jersey to work for a day. Today is the day I finally had to pay up. Mortifying sitting around in a Derek Lee jersey all day. Where there any stipulations about wearing something over it? or maybe inside out?

Jeff Passan breaks down Loria's letter to the fans. -
We completely gutted and re-did our kitchen about 3 years ago. We checked prices at the major stores like Lowes, Home Depot and Menard's and then we checked with a couple of local places. We found a local place that we liked and they offered financing with 0% interest for 18 months. So we jumped on that. We were originally just going to get new cabinets and counter-tops and re-paint the walls but there was wallpaper on the wall and it was almost impossible to scrap off. So we decided to just tear it all down and have them put up new drywall. After that we started getting project creep. With the walls already down we decided to get the electrical re-wired (brought up to code) and added a few new outlets. We also added more lighting in the ceiling. All stuff that was needed anyway. We did some of the work ourselves like buying and staining the trim, painting the walls, and buying all the new outlets, sink, microwave, ceiling fan and garbage disposal ourselves and just letting them install it all. We even bought and stained some wood so they could build us a new pantry door. All in all I think we spent somewhere around $6000. We didn't get any top of the line stuff though. Basic cabinets/counter-top. Basic stainless steel sink. Lowes and Home Depot wanted that much just for the cabinets and counters. So we got a really good deal.

QUOTE (qwerty @ Feb 15, 2013 -> 11:49 PM) True troll right here. http://www.imdb.com/user/ur7969168/comment...ful&start=0 I actually thought that his review for The Road was pretty good. That's basically how I felt when I read the book.

QUOTE (Swingandalongonetoleft @ Feb 14, 2013 -> 12:08 PM) ^^ He is (or was) managing something somewhere in Indiana, so there is that. The mustache is probably good for 3-4 WAR(M?), maybe more. This popped into my head the other day for some reason but I don't remember the last time a coach won a championship in Chicago and he didn't have some sort of facial hair. Ditka had a mustache, Quenneville had a mustache, Phil Jackson always had a mustache or a full beard during the playoffs and Ozzie usually had a goatee. I believe all of the current coaches except Q are clean-shaven. Now think about which team has the best chance to win a championship right now... /end half-joking conspiracy theory

QUOTE (Tuna @ Feb 10, 2013 -> 11:02 AM) Just bought a car last week. Pay attention to the details. Gap insurance sounded like a great idea until I found out the next day that my insurance company already covered that. Weil Cadillac - $1,000 Tuna - 0 We called our insurance company and got a quote for the gap insurance before we signed the paperwork. Then when the finance guy brought it up and quoted us a higher amount, we told him the amount our insurance company would charge us for it. Then he lowered his quote to below what the insurance company offered. I’m just afraid I’m going to have to actually use it before too long. I’ve already gotten hit once last September and came within inches of getting hit twice within the last week. I haven’t even owned the car a full year yet…

QUOTE (Y2HH @ Feb 8, 2013 -> 12:32 PM) Fixed. Actually it's the top-loading one which doesn't suffer from that malady nearly as much as the front-loading one.

QUOTE (RockRaines @ Feb 8, 2013 -> 11:24 AM) My original nintendo from when I was a little kid still functions perfectly as well as the accessories like the power pad and power glove. Thats f***ing staying power. Mine does too. In fact my daughter and I spent last weekend playing Super Mario 3.

QUOTE (Balta1701 @ Feb 6, 2013 -> 06:13 PM) (This isn't actually why they're losing money. They're losing money because Congress passed a law a few years ago requiring them to pre-fund their pension plan out to 75 years by 2016, something that I'm pretty sure no one has to do anywhere. Without that enormous pension pre-funding, the USPS would actually be operating at a profit right now, despite being required to maintain saturday delivery and maintaining unprofitable post offices throughout the country in rural areas). The first time I read this I couldn't believe it was true. They are literally funding pensions for future employees that haven't even been born yet.

QUOTE (CrimsonWeltall @ Feb 6, 2013 -> 01:31 PM) The stock answer would be that being homosexual is not a sin, but engaging in homosexual acts is. That's exactly what somebody else told me a few days ago. I don't see how you separate the two things. Isn't the very definition of being a homosexual engaging in homosexual acts? Can you really consider yourself to be a homosexual if you only engage in heterosexual acts?

QUOTE (God Loves The Infantry @ Feb 6, 2013 -> 08:08 AM) Homosexuality is forgiveable How is being something God made you a sin and how is one forgiven for it considering it’s not something one can change?

QUOTE (Iwritecode @ Jan 15, 2013 -> 12:38 PM) We should be getting a couple thousand back. Although we did add another dependent this year so it might be more. We'll be putting it towards getting gutters on the house and remodeling our bathroom. Apparently this isn't true. We have a 16-year-old who's mother signed over temporary custody to us last June. So we have legal guardianship, she's under 17 and we've had her for over 6 months. But because she wasn't placed with us through an adoption agency, we aren't allowed to claim her as a dependent.

I'll probably be putting my pop-up up on craigslist again this year since we didn't have any buyers for it last year. It'll be nice to get a little extra money and get it out of the driveway. Opening weekend isn't until April 12 for our campground but we are counting down the days until we can get back out there and open our trailer up for the summer.

QUOTE (pittshoganerkoff @ Jan 24, 2013 -> 11:56 AM) Overall, as a parent, I've found just about everything I've learned in school to be useful as I spend time every night helping my kids with their homework. I'm just the opposite. I try to help my kids with their homework and sometimes I can't because it's stuff I haven't even thought about much less used in 20 years. The math stuff they come home with I can usually figure out if I look at it but I usually don't know any real-world applications for it. The English homework I'm just lost on. Subject verbs vs. objective verbs... Compound subjects... prepositional phrases... I did learn keyboarding in HS so that's good but probably 80% of the rest of it has been pretty useless so far. Especially my electives. Marketing, Spanish, electronics, programming (on Apple computers). I've forgotten most of it.

I got curious so I did some research. Since Wrigley was built, the Cubs have played in the World Series 6 times, but in 1918 they played in Comiskey. So in 5 World Series, the Cubs have only won 2 games as the home team. One in 1935 and one in 1945.

QUOTE (DukeNukeEm @ Jan 21, 2013 -> 10:26 AM) I made it to "Companies that want better workers need to pay more". That's just not how it works, at every job I've ever had you start out with a relatively low wage then prove yourself to be worth a higher wage. When you see a job for $11/hour dont look at that, think about how you can make it $16/hour within a couple years. I had that same train of thought at my first job. But some companies start you out low and then give really low raises so you never really get anywhere. When I first got hired I was making a relatively low salary of $26,000. Being only 20 years old and not even out of college, that was a lot of money to me. Divide it out and it's $12.50/hour When I got let go 11 years later I was making around $33,000. That's only $15.86/hour. So my pay increased a little over $3/hour over 11 years.

QUOTE (ptatc @ Jan 17, 2013 -> 10:03 AM) This could be part of the program . One day a wek as work starts there is an information session on these types of things. Even in the current system. Maybe they should make it mandatory to go to an information session on this type of thing. When I was unemployed I was required to go to some sort of training seminar one time. Most of it focused on how to use the IDES website for job searching but it was fairly worthless. -

QUOTE (southsider2k5 @ Jan 10, 2013 -> 02:16 PM) Cook the beef until fully browned. Once that happens, get a strainer and put the beef in there with a bowl underneath. The fat drips through the strainer into the bowl. You can even take a spatchela and smash the beef down to squeeze out more fat. It ends up way less greasy. That's what I've always done. I just assumed everyone else did the same thing.
