2014 Draft class
QUOTE (fathom @ May 16, 2014 -> 04:30 PM) If they were both available, I wonder if the Sox would take Aiken or Kolek? It's funny, as I seem to change my mind weekly about who I would want them to take if they had the first pick. Rodon is the safer pick of the three, but who knows how his slider adjusts to the different baseball in the majors. I would love to see one of the big name catchers fall into the 2nd round. I'm firmly on the Aiken train. Sorta kinda preferring an underslot Freeland over Rodon currently too. He's getting rave reviews. BA loves him. Getting a Chris Sale vibe from him. Lanky lefty, similar armslot, similar pitch mix too (though the change isn't stellar).

QUOTE (raBBit @ May 16, 2014 -> 04:15 PM) Wonder if someone said something to Avent with Rodon's pitch counts reverting back to an acceptable number. Not entirely sure, but it sounds like his performance tonight was underwhelming according to most industry sources.

QUOTE (winninguglyin83 @ May 15, 2014 -> 12:12 PM) just curious -- how many of the top guys will be represented by Boras? Will that influence who the Sox select? Rodon Jackson Conforto Fedde Those are the ones that are more or less "confirmed" to have Boras representation.

QUOTE (Eminor3rd @ May 14, 2014 -> 04:46 PM) I don't think anyone is saying that -- but there's legitimate reason to believe that Kolek may be one of the biggest injury risks EVER. At that point, it needs to be a consideration, IMO. Not going to post the response to your question? http://www.baseballamerica.com/college/201...prospects-chat/

QUOTE (IowaSoxFan @ May 12, 2014 -> 04:25 PM) Just going to throw this out there given Nola's ascent recently, his brother is in AA with the Marlins. Some times those familial ties have an impact with selections. I doubt they take him given the composition of the draft, but it would not shock me, especially if the Marlins want to employ the same underslot strategy that has been talked about constantly with the Sox. At this point, I think Kolek and Rodon go off the board at 1-1 and 1-2, and the Sox pick between Aiken and the field. Aiken is my number 1 so I'd be perfectly fine with that. Wouldn't snivel at Kolek or Rodon either.

QUOTE (caulfield12 @ May 10, 2014 -> 06:40 PM) But isn't take Nola another version of Broadway/McCulloch/Poreda, except at the 3 spot? Obviously, Wacha went #13 and was great, but nobody's projecting Nola as a frontline starter or ace at the big league level right now, are they? (Of course, there were critics/skeptics about Adam, too.) Poreda was not a safe pick. The consensus pitchers with frontline potential are Aiken, Rodon, and Kolek. If anyone else did they would be in the discussion with those three. Nola is being discussed because of the rumor that the Sox are considering the second tier of college arms which indeed would be sacrificing ceiling for more certainty. The theory is that they would also be garnering some financial flexibility via significant underslotting and the ability to grab multiple players with significant talent. I don't think people are necessarily arguing that it's the definite way to go, just exploring who might be the selection if not one of the big three.

QUOTE (flavum @ May 10, 2014 -> 01:38 PM) Any chance Nola gets in the conversation for the Sox after today? I like the idea of taking somebody closer to the majors. If as rumored that they aren't that into Kolek, then absolutely. Nola is in that next tier of arms. I'd still very much prefer Aiken/Rodon though.

QUOTE (raBBit @ May 10, 2014 -> 01:08 PM) When I've seen him, the secondary offerings were great. Fastball has good sinking movement as most sidearmers fastballs do. He's another guy who can fly through someone's system. Definitely one of my favorite prospects this year. If the Sox go under slot at #3, he'd be at the top of my list. He's more or less turned into the number 2 college pitcher on most draft boards. Solid three pitch mix right now, polished, pitchability type. High floor. Likely to be one of the first starting pitchers in the class to reach the majors. I could see the Twins jumping all over him if he's there at number 5.

Nola with 5 K's through 3.0 IP. Fanned 4 in a row. Has the breaking ball working. Haven't seen much of the changeup. Pounds the strike zone. A repeated knock on him is the arm slot. Almost side-arm.
