2014 Draft class
As I've said previously I really like Nola. Safe is tossed around a lot with negative connotation around here, but the safe draft prospect at 3 is much different than taking the safe player at 15 to 20. Nola still has upside. I'm still unsure who I'd want between an underslot Nola and a slot or higher Rodon. Though I wouldn't be disappointed with either.

QUOTE (Chilihead90 @ Jun 4, 2014 -> 03:13 AM) I want Gillaspie or Reetz with our 2nd pick. Gillaspie will likely be off the board. Reetz might be around for the Sox in the 3rd round.

Pitching prospects with strikeouts make me very happy.

Encouraging starts by both Lowry and Danish thus far.

QUOTE (Buehrle>Wood @ Jun 1, 2014 -> 11:47 AM) That article is free and has Aiken going 1 and Kolek to us. Pretty sure this is just the mock they put up on Friday. Not sure why it has today's date on it. It reads identical as far as I can tell.

QUOTE (chisoxfan310 @ May 31, 2014 -> 11:32 AM) Is it possible that with Rodon, they could make a deal where he makes less and is promised a late call-up this season (even if it is in the bullpen just to get experience)? Like how the Sox handled Chris Sale. Not out of the question I'd say.

QUOTE (The Ultimate Champion @ May 31, 2014 -> 10:21 AM) I still want Kolek the most & am liking that there's more out there now about the Sox wanting him. The Nola stuff was scary to me. IF Kenny/Rick/Jerry feel they'll get Rodon at a price which allows them to still make use of their overall draft figure (because IMO it's absurd to blow that $9M wad on pretty much one guy) then one of the three, I'll take that all day. Rodon has all the talent, just the threat of demanding a #1 bonus or something, that scares me. Especially when there's deep pitching overall in the draft. I think Nola is being undersold a bit. Plenty of publications think he's worthy of the number 3 pick. He might not have an ace ceiling, but maybe a number 2. He can touch mid 90's, has pinpoint command, and 2 plus pitches with a chance for 3. Do the White Sox thing and work on a cutter, see what happens. He could likely be placed in the rotation next year and hold his own. He will be one of the first draft picks of this class in the majors without question. The arm slot seems to be the only knock on him from what I can tell. I wouldn't take him over an Aiken or Rodon, but perhaps over Kolek. I would not be unhappy with a Nola selection. Especially if he's underslotted to spread some money around.

keithlaw @keithlaw 2m Heard from a scout at the regional that Tyler Beede looked the best he has all season in his outing last night.

Beede was filthy last night. 8.0 IP 4 H 0 R 2 BB 14 SO. If those command issues ever get straightened out he's going to be real good. If the Sox were picking later in the 1st round, he would be an ideal target. Video compilation showing each strikeout from last night. http://www.vucommodores.com/allaccess/?media=447832

Tons of college baseball on today. Looks like you can stream all of it on ESPN3 if you have access to it. Aaron Nola is the only player still playing that could be in the mix at 1-3. He pitches tonight at 7.

While I'd prefer Aiken, I'm okay with Kolek too. I think some around here are a bit too down on him. If the Sox think highly of him I'm sure they've done there due diligence and don't think he's at immediate risk of blowing his elbow out, or are confident in being able to smooth out anything that concerns them. It also sounds like they might be able to garner a bit of financial flexibility with the pick as well.

QUOTE (Bigsoxhurt35 @ May 26, 2014 -> 08:17 PM) Ventura is getting knocked around by the Astros. He's still young obviously but so far he's not blowing anyone away until he gets his command. But I like him a lot He's getting knocked around because he's injured. Was sitting around 90 before he was pulled. Might have to add him to the TJ epidemic of 2014.

Possible Suitors for Gordon Beckham
QUOTE (caulfield12 @ May 26, 2014 -> 03:19 PM) 17,075 on Memorial Day? REALLY? Were all of those fans Yankees' fans the last two days? DJ marketing the Chris Sale start hard, lol. Saying how he would buy a ticket if he wasn't already coming to the game. Great defensive play by Conor, two nice swings by Viciedo and Gillaspie to tack on some more runs hopefully. This thread is about Gordon Beckham.

QUOTE (LDF @ May 24, 2014 -> 07:52 PM) if I remember correctly, he was never going to be a big strikeout kind of pitcher, mostly grounder and put outs. Not going to make a big deal out of this particularly because Danish is only 19 in High-A, but pitching prospects for the most part need to show a proclivity for the strikeout. Strikeouts are a significant barometer for future success, especially at lower levels as competition only gets better as you move up. Even your pitch to contact sinker types strike people out in the minors. Extreme cases like Brandon Webb even had K/9's in the range of 7 to 9 throughout his progression. There are obviously outliers and exceptions to the rule, but a lack of strikeouts should raise some concern. Once again, not really worried about Danish. He's 19, on an innings limit, and is only working at 88 to 91 so far. Just hoping that more swing and miss shows up as he hones his craft.
