IF the Sox were to sign another top free agent, they would only have to pay a third round draft choice, because #1 is protected and #2 went to the Yanks.

If this trade is made, Sox are definitely not trading Alexi, IMO. -
I always thought that his greatest value would be as a throw-in as part of a Kemp to White Sox trade as a way of softening Kemp's salary impact.

I'd rather have Bobby Thigpen.

Thanks, Chili. Some interesting stuff there.

QUOTE (Vance Law @ Dec 7, 2014 -> 02:43 AM) I was exaggerating Cleuluis' hitting ability, which is very limited, to point out how bad E Cabrera was with the bat last year. 263 players got at least 300 plate appearances last year and advanced stats regard Cabrera as the 8th worst in baseball last year. Regarding defense, my understanding was that Cleuluis would be an above average defensive shortstop in MLB right now. Who were the other 7 worst?

Maybe The Sox Don't Need Another Starter and Reliever
oldsox replied to Lillian's topic in Pale Hose Talk
The Rockies tried something similar to this in 2012. Starters were limited to 75 pitches, then his "Piggy Back" pitcher would come in. The two pitchers were kind of a team, I guess. Of course, it didn't work, and everyone laughed at them, especially the Denver Post. Players hated it. They did it because the pitching staff was getting bombed routinely. Who knows, if a contending team tried it, it might work. We'll probably never know. -
Read something that Baltimore is inquiring about Kemp since they lost Cruz.

Snodgress and Carroll "not offered contracts"
oldsox replied to southsider2k5's topic in Pale Hose Talk
Speaking of "Non-Tendered Contracts" I noticed that's what happened to Gordon Beckham. Angels non-tendered him and he declared free agency. That sound I hear is Southsider laughing out loud. -
Toriiii signed with Twinkies. Can't get rid of him.

QUOTE (southsider2k5 @ Dec 2, 2014 -> 08:05 AM) People, PLEASE stop using minor league errors as some sort of gauge that someone isn't able to play a position. As has been said before, plenty of MiLB SS's have had high error totals, and turned into good or great ML SS's. And since Omar was mentioned, look up his minor league fielding numbers. Right. And this includes Luis Aparicio, who had some rough edges at SS his first year. If not traded, Anderson looks like he will be the SS here for many years once he takes over. -
QUOTE (GreatScott82 @ Nov 29, 2014 -> 06:15 PM) I'm also very happy that we are trying to build a very strong rotation. Samardzija at the top of our rotation would arguably give us the best rotation in the AL central. Now, the return cost is the immediate question. Are we at the point in the organization to start dealing away top prospects? To answer that question, I would say no. This then brings me to tradable veterans. I would consider trading Alexei for him under a few conditions: 1) Billy Beane gives the Sox and Samardzija a 24 hour window for a contract extension. I would love to see a 4 year extension. 2) The Sox not only acquire Shark which would be a risky 1 year rental, but they also acquire a top prospect in return for Alexei. Let's face it, Beane would later flip Alexei for top prospects after the 2015 season. Fact of the matter is this... Sale, Samardzija, Quintana would be a Sick trio!!! How many games would that trio win in 2015 with the Sox as now constructed? Assume no major injuries to them, and they collectively get 90-100 starts.

Beane wants a great SS prospect to make up for the one he lost (Russell) when the Cubs ripped him off -
Now Donaldson and Baltimore's Machado get to play each other 19 times. Might geet interesting.

QUOTE (LDF @ Nov 28, 2014 -> 04:55 PM) then why is there alot of emphasis placed on the GG award? It gives the media something to talk about

Inciarte is a clone of Adam Eaton, isn't he? Not that that is bad.
-
I don't get whatever infatuation there is for Victorino. There is no reason to believe he will hit even .260ish with no power. Let's face it, de Aza is probably better.

Posters keep knocking Kemp's defense; I saw him botch a couple of plays in Center last season. No reason why he can't still be a very good left fielder, is there?

QUOTE (GreenSox @ Nov 25, 2014 -> 03:40 PM) The White Sox, from one angle, are in a great position with 2 superstars (teams better than us don't have that) plus 2 really good young players in Eaton and Q. What the Sox lack are solid league average or above players at 3B, OF, 2B, 2 starter spots, and on the bench. We are the inverse of the Royals...they are solid across the board, with no stars. Why are the Sox so poor at so many positions? Simple - lousy farm system. Poor drafting and ineffective development. There's not an outfielder in the system that you could even contemplate competing for real playing time this year. There are no farm pitchers, YET, who can be anything more than 5th starters next year. Solution? Keep building the farm - don't trade it. Trade Alexei - he's the guy the Sox need to trade. We don't have a 2 year window - we have 5 year window that is just beginning. He won't be here in the prime of it. Move him for young players, prospects or emerging young hitters or pitchers. That 1 sure contender (Dodgers) and 1 putative contender (Mets) are in dire need, should maximize our return. Otherwise, sign 1 starter, and get a LF (non-platoon). Guys like Gillaspie could be a useful piece to the team, especially if he can play OF. He can spell at various positions, play some DH, etc. Trading Sale shifts the window forward at least 3 years, if not more. I can see trading him, but it should be for someone ready to step into the lineup right away. Putative.......good word.

When does Moncada's fate get decided? Tough to follow the new int'l rules.

QUOTE (StRoostifer @ Nov 23, 2014 -> 06:19 PM) Nope. But LDF and I have wondered recently if things discussed here at SoxTalk end up being written about. In other words, sometimes it really seems like writers read SoxTalk related proposals/ideas here and then write about it. Writers like Levine, Heyman and Merkin come to mind, especially Levine. I've seen Levine write up articles on Sox needs and trade possibilities after other writers have already written about them, guy is a hack. Before this gets too anal, I'm not saying all writers and I'm not saying that is what's happening. Just a funny observation is all and possibly a credit to the Sox community here. I thought you were Levine.

QUOTE (SoCalSox @ Nov 22, 2014 -> 10:23 PM) Kemp is a big baby & one that can't keep healthy at that. I'm with certain posters here who would want Van Slyke. Kemp seems like he has a huge ego & I wouldn't want anything to do with that. So what. A couple of mods here have big egos, and you still participate on SoxTalk...

QUOTE (CaliSoxFanViaSWside @ Nov 22, 2014 -> 11:11 PM) I also think another reliever is next. Kemp is overkill in the lineup when we still need pitching in the rotation and the pen. Dodgers will try like hell to move Ethier and Crawford before Kemp . They want to keep Kemp. Might take awhile for Dodger to work a deal to get rid of who they want , fielding offers and paying as little of their salary's as they can. Could be Saunders from Seattle ,could be Melky , If Alexei is traded doubtful its for anything but pitching (Mets )unless Hahn waits it out to see how successful the Dodgers are at thinning their OF mess . My long shot bet Francisco Rodriguez. You're probably right, Dodgers would prefer keeping Kemp vs Ethier or Crawford. That's why they are no doubt willing to give Ethier away for next to nothing. But Kemp is a stud. You can put him out in LF and be set for five years. He would hit a ton at the Cell. What I don't know is how important is the feud between Kemp and Puig. Kemp is my choice, even at the cost of giving up Alexei.
