The Dodgers and Browns are such hilariously bad examples. There's no politician in Chicago (possibly Illinois?) that holds as much power over urban development as Robert Moses (who disliked baseball) when O'Malley wanted to move the Dodgers one neighborhood over. Art Modell maneuvered himself into a hole and ended up with an expensive, decaying stadium. The best recent comparison is the A's, and look how well that's going for them.

This is like saying the Yankees hat is bland. Two contrasting colors using a good design is clean. Becoming the 14th MLB team to use red as a color is bland. As for it not being a black and white world: I'm not sure if you're going for the world being morally gray, which makes no sense in context of baseball, or fashion not being black and white, which is exactly why their current brand is fashionable.

People are so giddy about a rebrand, thinking it'd be a throw back to a past uniform. If there's a rebrand, it's going to be a modern, minimalist logo (look at the NBA losing all flavor). Keep the classic looking that could skyrocket in popularity (moreso than it already has) by fielding a good team.

If I had to guess, it's cause his friends were still around, so he might have been doing whatever he could to try to put the dying embers of that team on his back and keep the band together.
