  1. Sox take Matthew Grimes another pitcher
  2. QUOTE (Jerksticks @ Jun 8, 2010 -> 11:51 AM) Exciting time to be a Sox fan with big changes on the near horizon. We all talk about restocking the farm even while knowing our GM loves to send kids packing. So not through your eyes, but through Kenny's; who would you sacrifice a bunch of kids for? Any players not typically thought of as available? Like somebody else's Danks, Beckham etc. Not saying it's possible but Stanton from the Marlins would look good in a Sox uni. Or if you want something a bit more realistic, Derek Norris from the Nationals.
  3. QUOTE (SoxAce @ Jun 8, 2010 -> 12:00 PM) We have another Reed in our system. Sox are really stock picking on pitchers. We desperately needed it though. Behind Hudson it looks pretty bleak. Gotta think we go offense with the #114. Maybe Hunter Morris.
  4. QUOTE (b-Rye @ Jun 6, 2010 -> 09:24 PM) I don't know where to start. This team is as bad as 2007 yet there hasn't been a significant injury. Payroll is over 100 million. We have NINE guys on active roster hitting under .250, and four swirling around .200. 1. DFA Kotsay, Randy Williams, Ramon Castro, Scott Linebrink. 2. Send Gordon Beckham, Carlos Quentin to AAA and get them some easy at bats and a hitting coach (Even though it seems there AAA hitting coach sucks too.) 3. Sign Jermaine Dye NOW, get him a few weeks in AAA and have him DH/PH/OF when needed. (If he's willing, or he can stay at home and keep laughing at former team). 4. Recall Dayan Viciedo til Dye is ready, Donny Lucy, Morel 5. Make trade with Cubs. They have FIVE outfielders who could start here and make any of ours look silly. They need pen help, so say Bobby Jenks Colvin or more likely Xavier Nady. 6. Make a trade, get some prospects. Move Buehrle and AJ P. As much as I don't want them to go, they probably won't be resigned and can get back a few decent prospects. C- Tyler Flowers, Donny Lucy 1B- Paul Konerko 2B- Jayson Nix (BECKHAM) 3B- Morel (til Teahen unfortunately comes back) SS- Ramirez RF- Pierre/Quentin CF- Rios LF- Jones/Quentin DH- Dye/Viciedo/Nady/Pierre SP - Peavy Danks Floyd Garcia Hudson CL Santos SETUP Thorton Putz Torres Pena Ryan Braun I think after all those changes the team still sucks, but might have a better shot at winning. This team would atleast be .500. And a new coaching staff wouldn't hurt either, or a hell a GM that's whats to win his way, not Ozzies way. not likely
  5. QUOTE (LittleHurt05 @ Jun 5, 2010 -> 03:23 AM) Buehrle & Floyd have ERAs over 4.50, Richard & Ely have only pitched in the NL West. How good do you think they would really end up? Thank you. But arguing with all these retrospective GMs is useless, since they ALL knew Peavy was terrible.
  6. QUOTE (WCSox @ Jun 5, 2010 -> 12:46 AM) That doesn't change the fact that the players have failed the organization, not the other way around. I was agreeing with you. I was just presenting the first argument people run into when blaming players instead of coaches. To some degree it holds weight, but it boils down to this. People love simple answers. Half of the team is underperforming, half of the team won't get traded away because that's not a smart business decision. It's a complex problem, so an easy solution is to blame the manager. But to some degree it's the right system. Guillen represents his players. If his players aren't getting it done, fair or not, Guillen takes the heat. He told KW this team was alright as it is. He was comfortable giving Kotsay and Vizquel all those AB's. And the whole rotating DH. Whether or not Ozzie, KW, or the players are held accountable is another question, but I'll say it again apathy is contagious. And sometimes it's confused for loyalty.
  7. QUOTE (caulfield12 @ Jun 4, 2010 -> 11:55 PM) Simple to say we should have stood pat: 1) Kept Thome for DH (although Jones has been about the same production for similar price)....but Kotsay's at-bats would have been lowered, although TMK has been one of our better hitters as of late 2) Reverse the Ely for Pierre trade...Pods stays in LF, we're not stuck with Pierre in 2011 3) Reverse the Peavy for Richard/Poreda/Russell/Carter trade 4) Never traded for Mark Teahen....Anderson/Fields/Getz don't really matter in the overall scheme of things, though Our rotation would be Danks, Buehrle, Floyd, Richard and Ely/Garcia Mitchell would be banging on the door with an MVP Year in the Southern League. Flowers would be ready to replace AJ at season's end, Viciedo for Konerko and Hudson could be brought into the back of the rotation or long man. The money saved on Peavy, Teahen and Pierre (not to mention Vizquel) could have been used on getting a real DH if they didn't want to go with Thome or Andruw Jones. They also could have signed Orlando Hudson for 2B, kept Beckham at 3B and never traded for Teahen. That would have been my move. Or bringing Uribe back. Guys lets relax a bit on wanting a re-up for the Peavy deal. He's a great pitcher. He was had for nothing. Any GM would do that deal everytime. Is Jake struggling sure but to regret sending Poreda, Richard, Russell, and Carter for him is laughable. And Ely is benefiting heavily from the NL-West.
  8. QUOTE (WCSox @ Jun 4, 2010 -> 11:47 PM) It's interesting how managers, coaches, and front office folk are always at fault, but veterans who don't perform at a level anywhere near their career numbers escape blame. You can't fire 25 players. Managers are either hated or overrated, the players make them look good. But apathy is pretty contagious.
  9. QUOTE (fathom @ Jun 4, 2010 -> 10:47 PM) 2 straight AWFUL offseasons. The Swisher trade to the Yankees was awful, and the Javy trade to the Braves has the potential to be a huge miss. I don't understand this. I thought Flowers was a good pickup for Javy. Lillibridge is garbage, but Rodriguez and Gilmore are still young talent that could come up(in a trade or through the organization.) I'd love to forget the Swisher trade (both sides) but I think you're being too hasty in writing off the Vazquez trade. This past offseason was truly disappointing in losing Dye, Thome, and Pods and trying to replace them with Jones, Teahen, and Pierre But the majority of this season's woes has been the incredible underachievement of our pitching staff. Our strength last year became our weakness this year. go figure.
  10. QUOTE (Thunderbolt @ Jun 2, 2010 -> 11:00 PM) This isn't pending, it's speculation. Kap and Fred Mitchell made it sound like it was a pretty strong source from what they were hearing. Wouldn't be surprised if it went down.
  11. QUOTE (RockRaines @ Jun 2, 2010 -> 05:38 PM) I would like to flip Konerko to the Cubs for D Lee Lee is about to be traded to the Angels. no word yet what the Cubs are getting.
  12. QUOTE (Balta1701 @ Jun 2, 2010 -> 02:49 PM) FWIW, if Williams were actually pitching well against LH and this team was actually in the race, if Ozzie kept putting him out there to face RH hitters as well as LH hitters, I'd be quite annoyed too. Right now though, Williams is just flat out bad against LH hitters as well. If he has 1 job, and he goes 2 months doing a terrible job of doing that, then he can have a target on his back. The one reason why I don't really care right now though, especially about him constantly facing RH hitters...is that almost every time he's facing RH hitters, Ozzie's just leaving him in for an inning or two when the team is already down several runs. He's getting a lot of those hitters in garbage time. So I'm just not sure I should care. It'd be nice if he could do a little bit better with guys from either side just to save the bullpen a bit more. Agreed. I sometimes feel a disconnect between Ozzie and the struggles of his players. Like, "what do you want me to do" "I have to start them". I get annoyed when he doesn't use better judgement.
  13. QUOTE (Kalapse @ Jun 2, 2010 -> 02:15 PM) That's because it's not true. He's faced 57 righties and 50 lefties this season with the majority of those righties coming in long relief. Last year he faced 37 righties and 43 lefties. Almost 10 more righties than lefties. I just re-read my post and i apologize for how i phrased "10 times more" I meant "10 more than". I think when I totaled it it was somewhere of 59 righties to 50 lefties, but there might've been a flaw in my math.
  14. QUOTE (Balta1701 @ Jun 2, 2010 -> 02:11 PM) So, you think that the problem with Randy Williams is that Cooper isn't a good pitching coach? It's pretty difficult to explain yourself a number of times, when all you get is condescending feedback. But I digress. Williams isn't a very good pitcher, but his problems are location. Something that a pitching coach regularly deals with and at times can fix. I never said Cooper's at fault for Randy, just that Randy's problems can benefit from Coop's guidance. The major problem is with Ozzie letting him in against RH. RH against Randy are hitting .432 and his WHiP is 3.91. Against lefties he has a WHiP of 1.73(His WHiP would be lower if he locates his pitches better) and an OPP AVG of .250, which isn't good but isn't horrendous either. Randy's job is to face LH, if he can't do that job you don't leave him there to "redeem" himself through a RH. If he regularly can't get out LH, which he hasn't really done yet, then you demote him and call up Threets. I feel like there are other things that people are overlooking when they plainly say Randy Williams doesn't deserve a roster spot.
  15. QUOTE (Balta1701 @ Jun 2, 2010 -> 02:00 PM) Really? Sure it isn't as if he's throwing wild pitches everywhere. Cooper has helped pitchers with worse location problems than Williams. To suggest Williams doesn't belong on a ML roster is overlooking a glaring problem with coaching. Pieces are irrelevant if the template is dysfunctional.
  16. QUOTE (WCSox @ Jun 2, 2010 -> 01:55 PM) Teahen's OPS has been significantly better than Vizquel's. I realize that's a "tallest midget" comparison, but at least Teahen's is capable of an occasional extra-base hit. Agreed about his defense, though. I foresee Teahen moving to 1B or a corner OF position next year. No way. He doesn't mash enough to even be considered for a prime hitting position. Teahen next year will move to Kotsay's position, Utility RF/3B/1B position. Teahen's actually been what everyone's expected, problem is its what everyone's expected.
  17. QUOTE (southsider2k5 @ Jun 2, 2010 -> 01:48 PM) How many of those lefties has he walked? this season he's walked 9 lefties, one less than the lefties he's struck out, which is bad. He's killing himself with the walks. But his problems are fixable. And there's no excuse for Ozzie to let Williams face RHers.
  18. QUOTE (La Marr Hoyt HOF @ Jun 2, 2010 -> 12:58 PM) The guy is a cancer and curse sent from the northside to haunt our franchise, boot him back to the Cubs Yeah ship him and his hot wife out of here. This is the South Side, gimme a hefty German wife with fuzz on her lip and rollers in her hair.
  19. QUOTE (NorthSideSox72 @ Jun 2, 2010 -> 08:13 AM) Erik Threets is back off the DL in Charlotte, pitched last night. Don't be surprised if he gets a call-up soon. Won't matter who our LOOGY is unless Ozzie uses him correctly. Williams problem has been location, he walks a ton of batters. But even then if you notice his splits against LH hitting(which is the only hitting he should face) he has a serviceable OPP AVG of .250. It isn't going to blow your socks off, but it should get the job done for a LOOGY, if all he faces is LHers. Williams, however, has faced RHers 10 times more than he has faced LHers. (Righties are hitting a blistering .432 against him). It won't matter if Threets gets called up the mistake is in coaching, you help your pitchers if they can't locate pitches and most importantly, a good manager understands a player's strengths/weaknesses and plays to their strengths. It's dumbfounding how simple fundamental things escape our coaching staff. I pray for accountability.
  20. QUOTE (whitesoxfan101 @ Jun 1, 2010 -> 09:23 PM) http://www.suntimes.com/sports/baseball/wh...T-sox01.article I know most around here don't like Cowley, but do you agree with him? I know this much: his ideas to "clean up the mess" aren't things I necessarily agree with. Don't know how realistic it is for the White Sox to try and sign Cliff Lee. Giving that higher market teams could easily up their offers and chase the Sox out of bidding. If we're rebuilding the staff, we should look into bargain arms like Lilly or Kuroda. I'd be in for trading Buehrle or Floyd, but it'll be difficult to get value for them. Saying Hudson can replicate what Floyd is doing now, seems a bit irrational. I have no doubt Hudson will become a great pitcher, but relying on him to come a be a solid #3-4 next year(his rookie year) is posing more questions than answering them. As for the bullpen, it's a no brainer to try and trade Bobby and if you can't non-tender him. IMO there are better options out there than Putz. Fix the bullpen top down. Who closes, Santos or Thornton? If it's Santos all you do is find RHSU. If its Thornton find LHSU. The rest will fall in place. I would argue in finding a good mop up guy, like go figure the one we non-tendered(Carasco). Would've helped some struggling SP this year if we still had him. Now the offense. I agree trade Konerko and AJ. Wouldn't be opposed to re-signing Konerko at a discount. Crawford, Dunn, or even Werth could be a stretch but would go tremendously to helping the offense, but would try and find bargains like Conor Jackson(possible non-tender), Cristian Guzman, or even Jim Thome(would help Beckham as a mentor). I think Cowley is failing to mention a change of personnel. If Ozzie stays, his coaches need to be reassessed. Walker and Cox should be let go. I agree with Joe, KW should start thinking about 2011 but some of his suggestions are unrealistic.
  21. Per Scot Gregor: Daily Herald Don't know if I love the deal for the White Sox considering Kosuke makes $13.5 Mil next year, making $13 this year, and Carlos is in his arb years. But if the Cubs happen to kick in money say ~$5 Mil, i think it becomes intriguing. Fukudome has a good average, gets on base, and also LH. We can temper our expectations, in that he will never be a cleanup hitter like the Cubs initially thought. Although if there ever was a trade that would risk KW getting burned, wouldn't this be it? Quentin to the Cubs. If he were to attain anything close to 2008 numbers, we wouldn't here the end of it from those idiots. What do you guys think?
  22. QUOTE (TitoMB @ May 27, 2010 -> 08:34 PM) Agreed. Easily the worst ad campaign in the last few years. Energy BBDO, the ad agency the Sox have worked with since 2007, have joined with the San Jose Group, new Hispanic agency, to deliver the new ad campaign. Energy BBDO have done great work for the White Sox including one of my favorites, "Share the Passion Show the Swagger" and last year's "White Sox Traditions". Because of this partnership with SJG, the current campaign has to translate well in both English and Spanish models. This can seem like a good way to get your message across cultural lines, but the results are always the same, bland. Why? Context. The same message delivered in American markets must remain constant in Spanish markets, there's no room for deviation, hence no personality in the campaign. Because what we, Americans, might find funny; Spanish audiences won't. And Vice-Versa. So what you're left with is a cookie-cutter safe idea that can be "plugged" into several markets without context incongruity. If I can chime, "Good Guys Wear Black" is head and shoulders above "The Kids Can Play". But nothing beats "Grinder Ball Rules" in 2005, when we won it all. "Win or Die Trying"
  23. QUOTE (Thunderbolt @ May 26, 2010 -> 01:51 PM) We should of traded his ass when we could . This is the price of loyalty. This is why we should trade Thornton now or next year. Have Santos close for a few years and then trade him. In baseball you're always blessed with second chances and you're measured by how much you've learned the first time around.
