  1. QUOTE (The Ginger Kid @ May 26, 2010 -> 01:19 PM) wish hriniak could help CQ Maybe I haven't noticed yet, but when did Quentin drastically change his batting stance? He doesn't crouch nearly as much as he used to and he's waving the bat over his head much like Youkillis does. When did this start?
  2. QUOTE (Jordan4life @ May 24, 2010 -> 01:02 AM) I was messin' with ya. That's just not a word you hear or see ever in life. Even Thunderbolt wouldn't bust that word out. No worries mate. I was an English major and also an a*hole.
  3. QUOTE (Jordan4life @ May 24, 2010 -> 12:41 AM) What the hell? to ameliorate (third-person singular simple present ameliorates, present participle ameliorating, simple past and past participle ameliorated) (transitive) To make better, to improve; to heal; to solve a problem. They offered some compromises in an effort to ameliorate the situation. Go to class and don't fall asleep.
  4. QUOTE (Quinarvy @ May 24, 2010 -> 12:07 AM) If Gavin turns it around, perhaps flip him and some 'spects for Fielder given his contract issue? I was thinking about this in relation to the Jenks-Phillies speculation. If the Phillies get Jenks and his money, they would surely want to get out of a large contract of their own. I was intrigued when I came across Blanton because he's essentially the same pitcher as Gavin. Innings Eater/Strong Arm/ Back of the Rotation guy. He's owed $5 Mil more than Gavin over two years (not including Floyd's club option: $9.5). If the White Sox could get Blanton for Jenks. Then turn around and deal Floyd to the Brewers(for either prospects or as a cornerstone to a Fielder trade) it could be a strong move. I don't know how much Philly values Blanton, but that extra money off the books could ameliorate Howard's contract and go long towards bringing back Werth.
  5. QUOTE (Thunderbolt @ May 23, 2010 -> 11:48 PM) Milwaukee needs a 2-3-4-5 starter. That's something. Do you think we trade them starting pitching? Given how poorly our starting staff has been, I'd hate to sell on someone low.
  6. QUOTE (Lillian @ May 23, 2010 -> 08:33 PM) There are said to be "a couple of teams" scouting the Sox. What other teams besides the Phillies? For what are they looking? I think the other team scouts that were at the Angels/White Sox game were from Milwaukee and Pittsburgh. Gotta believe Milwaukee and Pittsburgh looking for the same thing as Philadelphia, bullpen help.
  7. QUOTE (ChiSox_Sonix @ May 18, 2010 -> 12:51 PM) That's completely false. If I'm not mistaken it was a matter of a few million or a second year of deferred money in order to get Damon to come to the Sox. Teahen will make $4.75 in 2011 and $5.5 in 2012, money that could've been deferred to Damon if we had gone year for year with Teahen. We overpaid two years in order to save a few hundred thousands for the first year; $3.75(2010 salary) - $3.85(estimated arb raise).
  8. QUOTE (elrockinMT @ May 18, 2010 -> 12:37 PM) He has been very dissapointing for sure. I have to say that I never saw that trade coming You know the trade wasn't that bad, considering Teahen is hitting below his career norms and the fact we didn't give up much to get him. But the glaring mistake is restructuring his deal for 3/$14 Mil rather than going year for year. It basically handcuffs you if he struggles, which is the case know. You can't trade him, you can bench him and make him an overpaid utility man; and most importantly the money that was used for the deal could've gone to get Damon or someone else the Sox were looking at but didn't have the financial flexibility to do so.
  9. QUOTE (fathom @ May 17, 2010 -> 03:09 PM) That's going to get people excited, be careful. Any excitement we can garner from Vizquel playing second and hitting in the 2 Spot can only be a good thing, right? Im guessing it happens in the 5th. Maybe when he's on the DL, Ozzie'll be forced to play Nix/Beckham.
  10. QUOTE (Thunderbolt @ May 17, 2010 -> 02:36 PM) Vizquel... whatever, i give up, Ozzie. Someone wanna guess which inning Vizquel will get hurt trying to turn a double play?
  11. QUOTE (Jenks Heat @ May 17, 2010 -> 01:44 PM) What type of free agent will he be? If he is a Type A or B that is the caliber of prospect you start with then you determine his value to the other team as well. He has his shortcomings but he is still a solid catcher that has a world series on his resume. I do not know how he works with pitchers but they seem to be fine with him. He should get something decent in return, what that is I do not know but I hope it more than when KW has given away guys in the past. I paid big money for my season tickets if they f***ed up the revenue stream too bad I want to get my money's worth and pure salary dumps are BS. Either get a discussion worhty return or let him play it out and then walk. Same thing with Konerko. The Elias Rankings right now list AJ as a Type A Free Agent, why I have no idea, but that could all change as the season progresses. And as stated previously by another poster, compensation only occurs if we offer arb and he declines; which he won't. As much as I love the value AJ gives to our team, I have always had a sneaking suspicion that he dogs it at the plate. At times I can tell he really doesn't try to work a count, the pitches he swings at and how he swings gives off a careless vibe. If i remember correct, he was caught watching a Gators football game during a game they were losing. Now I'm not a big advocate of clubhouse chemistry. I subscribe to the saying that winning brings chemistry, but that is absolutely detrimental to the development of our younger guys. If the veterans don't set the effort, who will? You have to stay hungry, to quote Peavy, "You have to be dirtbag that doesn't quit". I love the intensity he brings, that's a winning mentality. You have to trade/dfa/cut the others that don't share that vision regardless of who you get back. Which I don't mean to burst anyone's bubble we won't get much for AJ. It'll purely be a culture change. Chris Davis and a low A pitcher for AJ. Lucy and Castro share starts and Flowers makes a September call-up.
  12. QUOTE (jphat007 @ May 15, 2010 -> 11:44 AM) LOL, who is going to trade for a mediocre defensive catcher that can't hit. I think it'd be great to have a firesale, but I don't think we have many pieces that other teams would want AJ has been a pretty good model of consistency. for the past 5 years he's put up line around 280/320/420. Which isn't bad at all for a catcher his age. He's very durable. Good Baseball IQ. Has a reasonable contract (~3.35 Mil if a team were to trade for him midseason) And I get sick of hearing about of his defensive incapability. Throwing out base runners isn't the only facet of defense, AJ is the one of the best, if not the best, at blocking wild pitches. He also works really well with pitchers and confuses batters with his calls. A team like Tampa Bay comes to mind, as a contender maybe looking for a veteran piece to help them get to the next level of the post season.
  13. QUOTE (Balta1701 @ May 10, 2010 -> 03:57 PM) Really, no he isn't. We tested this last year with Podsednik (a base stealing threat who actually got on base at a good clip) in the leadoff spot and Alexei (solid fastball hitter, terrible breaking ball hitter) in the 2 hole. Despite the supposed base stealing threat hitting 1st, and despite offensive guys hitting behind him, our #2 hitter saw the fewest fastballs of any #2 hitter in baseball...because everyone knew that you had to throw breaking stuff to get Alexei out. Thankfully Beckham has a better eye than Alexei. I have more faith in him taking a walk than "Trigger Happy" Ramirez.
  14. QUOTE (Balta1701 @ May 10, 2010 -> 04:09 PM) Here's another way to look at it. If we get to July and we're still 10+ games out of the race...either Thornton or Putz are both more valuable as trade-chips if they have 10 saves under their belt than if they don't have any. That's a great point, and I think if they are going to go that route that decision should be made fairly soon. I have a hard time seeing them move Thornton, with the lack of another left handed threat, but he would net a pretty good return. Who do you think closes if Thornton or Putz is moved?
  15. QUOTE (Balta1701 @ May 10, 2010 -> 03:48 PM) Incorrect. Bobby neither replaced Takatsu or dominated in the Closer's role in 2005. He was 6/8 in saves in the regular season (only 75%) and blew the save in game 2 of the WS as well. Bobby took over the Closer's role from Hermanson, who's back finally gave out after 4 months in the closing role. Hermanson took over from Takatsu. Bobby only took the closer's role by default, after Hermanson was unable to pitch. Apologies for the incorrect data. My memory isn't as good as it once was. My point was to illustrate how Santos is fearless/dominant, much like the Jenks of the past. And how I think the White Sox would be better suited to have him close games and keep everyone else in their roles, instead of plugging in Thornton/Putz at closer and subsequently moving up Williams, Linebrink, or Pena.
  16. QUOTE (fathom @ May 9, 2010 -> 02:35 PM) As "Slayer's" biggest fan on this site, I think it's obvious he needs to get sent down to AAA. He's shown absolutely no signs of breaking out of his month long slump, and you can really see the frustration in his body language on the field and in the dugout. I don't even care about how his performance is hurting the team right now, as this season is looking like a long shot. It's vitally important for this franchise that Beckham is a productive starting 2nd baseman for years to come, and he needs to go back to the minors and regain his confidence. As someone else said in the game thread, maybe a few new voices from the Charlotte hitting coach will help him out. I really respect how Ozzie has handled Beckham's struggles this season, FWIW Keep him out there, he's gonna have lumps, but you have to show confidence in him to get through it. I'm torn whether or not to move him down in the lineup. Maybe the 2 spot does bear a great level of pressure and moving him down would alleviate this, but he's gonna see a lot more fastballs (better pitches) in the 2 spot than if he were hitting 6, 7, or 8. Whatever you do you don't send him back to the minors, he's a major league talent, a move like that would be regressive in his development. I have faith he'll get it together.
  17. QUOTE (fathom @ May 9, 2010 -> 08:11 PM) Doesn't seem like Bobby is too happy with possibly being removed. It will be interesting if we go with Thornton as the closer, because it would be similar to how the Cubs moved Marmol to closer. When that happens, the 7th/8th innings you used to take for granted become a lot more difficult. http://sports.espn.go.com/chicago/mlb/news/story?id=5175927 I think the best move would be to put Santos into the closer role and shifting Bobby to mid-relief/setup. It's unpopular because you'll have people say, he's too young, it'll ruin his development, etc. The man is unhittable, his stuff doesn't merit any inexperience, and he's fearless. Much like Bobby circa 2005. where his dominance ultimately demoted Takatsu, our closer at the time. It's really remarkable how history repeats itself and I hope the White Sox have learned form Bobby Jenks and apply these lessons when dealing with Sergio Santos. The lesson is closers are flash in the pan. Ride them while they're dominant and sell them at the highest trade value. But with our luck the opposite will happen and our team will have another over-paid middle reliever.
  18. QUOTE (MHizzle85 @ Apr 30, 2010 -> 03:16 AM) I don't get it. I've also been drinking all night so don't mind me. That's Socks the cat, either one of Bush or Clinton's pets. So Yankees vs. Sox. Hope it helps, but chances are you might be passed out by now. sweet dreams.
  19. Wonder if JP Ricciardi picked the Twins instead of the Sox because of spite. It's thanks to KW he works as an analyst.
  20. QUOTE (nitetrain8601 @ Mar 5, 2010 -> 06:19 PM) Honestly, the Bears should've been in on Boldin. Given the needs of the Bears starting WR > Backup RB. They should've traded for him IMHO. Overall, if you're a Bears fan, you have to be happy. I just think they should've concentrated more on skilled offense. What about going after Kevin Walter, he's a big possession receiver for the Houston Texans, he's a UFA, and is highly underrated. Oh and he's also from Lake Forest. Would be a great fit IMO. He's not a #1 but I don't think we'll need one if Martz spreads the offense around. Aroma, Bennett, Knox, Hester, Iglesias, and Walter would be a solid core for Cutler to work with. I do agree before we make any moves we need to shore up the OL (mainly LG), whether that's trading Olsen for picks we can then use to draft one or signing a FA. Shore up the OL, sign Kevin Walter, wait for a bargain in FS (fingers crossed for Atogwe) but Sharper should suffice. That would be a great offseason.

  22. QUOTE (maggsmaggs @ Feb 13, 2010 -> 11:17 AM) I believe they were high school teammates. That's interesting. I always thought Damon and AJ's swing were strikingly similar.
  23. QUOTE (Dick Allen @ Jan 3, 2010 -> 12:55 PM) Why would he be an improvement over Thome? Both Cust and Thome would be good choices for DH. But Cust is less of an injury liability.
  24. QUOTE (caulfield12 @ Dec 28, 2009 -> 09:47 AM) Whoever gets Xavier Nady gets the best value of the offseason; 5. Are the Pirates still in the league? Updates on nine 1. Troy Glaus, 1B, Braves - A low-risk, high-reward signing, Glaus has tremendous power (five 30-homer seasons - two of 40 - and four 100-RBI seasons), and if he is healthy after back and shoulder injuries diminished his career the past few years, he could be a monster. Glaus is agile enough to be a decent first baseman and a heck of a target for his infielders. The one negative trend for the Braves is the lack of commitment to payroll that the owners are making. They had to pass on their own free agents Mike Gonzalez and Rafael Soriano for cheaper versions in Billy Wagner and Takashi Saito. And they traded a good pitcher (Vazquez) for Melky Cabrera. 2. Kerry Wood, RHP, Indians - The Indians would love to move his $10 million salary and $11 million option for 2011, but with a glut of reliever/closer types out there, there has been no cry for Wood, who still can bring it. Wood might be enticing to the Red Sox if they decide to expand their budget. 3. Fausto Carmona, RHP, Indians - The Tribe would say he’s not available, but baseball executives don’t buy it. Carmona has been an enigma at times, but as one longtime National League talent evaluator said, “He’s got one of the best three sinkers in the game.’’ Not a front-end starter, but if a team needs a middle-to-back-end guy, the rebuilding Indians would have to listen. 4. Dan Uggla, 2B, Marlins - There’s no doubt the Marlins are planning another payroll dump, and Uggla would appear to be at the center of it. There was a lot of early talk about him going to the Giants, but that seems to have quieted down. Some scouts believe Uggla is best suited for the American League as a DH or someone you can move around, like a Mark DeRosa. The Marlins, who receive a ton in revenue-sharing and central-fund money, are looking to keep their profit margin high. 5. Jon Garland, RHP, free agent - A market is beginning to develop, and Texas appears to be the early leader. Another mid-to-back-end rotation guy that is probably better off in the NL, but that doesn’t mean an AL team won’t take the plunge if the price is reasonable. 6. Orlando Hudson, 2B, free agent - Seems he was the hot name for a long time, but that has quieted. The Mets remain the most interested, but until they are able to move Luis Castillo - a big if - the Mets may only be able to dream about a Jose Reyes-Hudson DP combo. 7. Vladimir Guerrero, DH, free agent - His choices are limited by what are seen as diminished skills in the outfield. Suffice to say he will be somewhere. Now that the Rangers have pulled out of the Mike Lowell deal, Guerrero could be a candidate for them. However, Jermaine Dye might interest Texas more (and maybe the Mets), considering he still can play the outfield. 8. Russell Branyan, 1B, free agent - An interesting bat to consider. Seattle may re-sign him if it’s for one year, but Branyan wants to cash in on his career year. So far, it’s not happening. He’s out there with guys like Jack Cust, Adam LaRoche, Aubrey Huff, Carlos Delgado, Jim Thome, and Hank Blalock. So the competition is fierce. 9. Miguel Tejada, 3B/SS, free agent - Still a very good bat who would be more valuable at third base. He may have the Mitchell Report stigma, but he loves to play the game and is a great teammate. Tejada could be a good fit for the Twins, who are trying to come up with a third baseman. He remains a good fit for the Rangers in a modified Lowell role (DH, 3B, and fill-in SS). He would have been a decent fit for Boston had Lowell gone in a deal. from boston.com WHITE SOX DH POSSIBILITIES 1) Andruw Jones/Kotsay platoon 2) Xavier Nady 3) Dan Uggla 4) Orlando Hudson 5) Vlad the Impaler 6) Russell Branyan 7) Jack Cust 8) Adam LaRoche 9) Aubrey Huff 10) Carlos Farmer in the Delgado 11) Jim Thome 12) Hank Blalock 13) Jeremy Hermida 14) Eric Hinske 15) Miggy Tejada I'm voting for Hermida, if KW can pry him loose and the Red Sox get off to a slow start and can't afford to play him if he's struggling. You know I'm in the minority here, but I'm pulling for Jack Cust. His K-rate is atrocious, but he did hit 25 homers in OAKLAND! He can draw a walk and (the thing that puts him over the top of Thome or Vlad) he still has fresh legs. Vlad has knee problems and Thome is a well-known base clogger. Cust stole 4 bases last year, which is nothing to brag about, but it's 2 more than Vlad or Thome did combined. Given that his home run totals would increase slightly with a move to a park like the Cell and I think Cust is a good choice for DH. Cust, Jones, Quentin rotate DH responsibilities according to opponent pitching; with Jones covering RF when Carlos is the DH; Cust is only played as a DH.
  25. QUOTE (southsider2k5 @ Jan 2, 2010 -> 09:35 AM) As crazy as it sound, right now Gavin Floyd might be the least likely pitcher to get traded on the Sox team. Out of the starters, Danks would be the most likely, as he has refused to sign an extension to this point. Gavin was almost traded to the Orioles for Brian Roberts, before the O's signed him to that ridiculous deal. So I wouldn't say he isn't likely to get traded. Gavin's a good pitcher, and one of my favorite players, but I think the organization knows he's not much more than a back of the rotation guy and he has tremendous value to a team looking for SP, as I mentioned the Nationals. I think the White Sox have more faith and promise with Danks and Hudson. Now Hudson still too young to project entirely, but from the small sample we got to see against ML hitting; he was dominant borderline unhittable. It'll be interesting to see how he progresses. With Danks(and his brother) dropping Boras, I think there's enough goodwill to sign him to an extension. Whether it happens this year or next is still up in the air, but ultimately I think it happens. I think he'll get close to the Lester-deal, probably same years less money
