  1. I think Melky has performed reasonably well. I hate watching him in the field, but I can't complain with what his final slash line was at the end of the year. His BA was down and he didn't hit many HR's, but his lines were pretty close to or around what his career averages are.
  2. Avi almost has to start in the minors if the Sox sign a OF. Sox need a 4th OF that can competently play CF. Avi can't even handle a corner OF spot.
  3. QUOTE (CaliSoxFanViaSWside @ Dec 22, 2015 -> 09:19 PM) Would it help to know Jermaine Dye had the best year of his career with the Sox at age 32 ? I was just looking at Dye's stats from age 32 on . He had some of his best years with the Sox. One of the few guys who was hurt a lot then gets to us and gets healthy and hits more HR for the Sox then he ever had before. We always hear " this guy will hit more HR at the Cell "but we never see it actually happen very much. Even in his last year in the majors at age 35 he hit 27 HRs and a .793 OPS and .340 OBP. Dye had 44 HR's in age 32 season. , 120 RBI , 1.006 OPS, .386 OBP, .662 SLG. , OPS+ 151 Dude could still hit when he retired ( or nobody wanted him). His fielding fell of a cliff if I remember it right . Lost a couple of steps at 33 rebounded a little at 34 but still bad ,then totally lost it a lot more at 35. Jermaine Dye's age 32 season is not a reason to go out and sign Gordon. If you're looking at Gordon for 5 years, you are looking at his 32-36 age seasons. Do you really think he is going to be worth the money through the length of that contract? Gordon is an excellent player now, but I fear the last few years of that deal will be a financial burden to the organization because it's rare to see players be able to maintain their level of play into those years. Look at Jimmy Rollins, he'd be an example of a player who is a shell of his former self entering his mid 30's. I'm not arguing that Gordon is a bad pickup, his OBP would look amazing in the Sox lineup. I'd would rather have Upton for the remaining prime years of his career plus his twilight years than Gordon who has the chance to start declining fairly soon.
  4. QUOTE (bmags @ Dec 22, 2015 -> 04:33 PM) Honestly he was the one I wanted most ahead of the frazier/lawrie signings. Now I'm intrigued by the possibility of having a team with above average power, but I still think the benefits of adding a top def LFer (which improves our pitching) that also helps our offense would be incredible. But I like all of em. Any three of them is an improvement to the team, I just would prefer to not take a chance on a guy that is most likely going to start declining over the contract.
  5. Really hope this is just the Sox trying to get either Cespedes or Upton's price down. Gordon is a great player, but he is not the player I want the Sox to sign. His age is cause enough for concern for me.
  6. QUOTE (Dick Allen @ Dec 22, 2015 -> 04:12 PM) From Hahn's comments last week, it seems to me the Avi shipped has perhaps sailed. He talked about his talent, but I don't think another year of experimentation is even a thought. He admitted he needed an OF. Plus for all we know, Avi may be unwilling to cooperate and make the changes the Sox staff see fit to get him to the next level.
  7. If the Sox got Upton/Cespedes, I would send Avi to Charlotte to start the year. He doesn't really have any value at the moment. Who knows, maybe he kills it and rebuilds some trade value allowing the Sox to flip him for someone.
  8. While Cespedes prevents you from losing a draft pick, I think I would rather have Upton. He's younger and has a much better career OBP than Cespedes. Of course I'd take either assuming the Sox don't break the bank. With LaRoche and Danks off the books offer a backloaded deal and the salaries could offset.
  9. QUOTE (soxfan2014 @ Dec 13, 2015 -> 09:56 AM) I'm thinking as of now, they'll go with LaRoche to start with but he will be on a short leash. They probably want him and Abreu sharing time at first and DH against righties with Melky DHing, Eaton in left and Trayce in center against lefties. But like I said, if LaRoche isn't performing and Trayce starts off good out of the gate we'd likely see LaRoche shift into a bench role (or even released). I would disagree. The Sox rarely hold big contract players on short leases. Adam Dunn is a prime example of that. LaRoche will be no different. Look how long it took Robin to bench him last year vs. LHP.
  10. QUOTE (bmags @ Dec 13, 2015 -> 12:43 AM) Well, in their defense, their team was 3rd in team ERA last year. It had the NL bump, but, if that's weak, I'll take it. But would you really take their 3, 4, and 5 over the Sox 3, 4, and 5? On paper they have nothing special behind Arrieta and Lester.
  11. QUOTE (Pants Rowland @ Dec 12, 2015 -> 10:36 PM) I was talking to a bunch of cubs fans last night. Just to test the waters, i threw out a random trade proposal of "as cubs fans, would you trade Shwarber for Rodon straight up?" Responding "No" all around. Am I nuts to think they are nuts? I had a Cub fan tell me trading Schwarber for Q straight up was idiotic. Cubs fans like having a weak rotation.
  12. QUOTE (Alexeihyeess @ Dec 11, 2015 -> 08:16 PM) I just want to see him play in a Sox uniform. If he sucks, oh well he sucks. I just don't want him thrown into some package to get Todd Frazier or some other bum that will do us exactly the way Dunn and LaRoche did. I really think there's superstar potential locked in there somewhere. Superstar is a bit of a reach. We're talking about a career .247 hitter in the minors. I like Thompson, but I don't see him as anything more than the White Sox version of Drew Stubbs. If the Sox have a good offer on the table for him, I would not mind selling high on him. Although I like the idea of keeping him on the team to play CF and shifting Eaton to one of the corners.
  13. QUOTE (WhiteSoxLifer @ Dec 6, 2015 -> 07:45 PM) http://chicago.cbslocal.com/2015/12/06/don...eff-samardzija/ Cooper on shark At least he took the blame. I think Samardzija and Coop we just not a good fit much in the same way Swisher and Walker couldn't work together.
  14. QUOTE (SoxPride18 @ Dec 6, 2015 -> 04:19 PM) Why? They have Jansen who is a beast. Also, going after Iwakuma. Could always flip Jansen to the Cubs.
  15. Turner will end up being the equivalent of Drabek next year. Although I think he has a much better chance to stick with the club out of the pen than Drabek did.
  16. QUOTE (DashFan @ Dec 4, 2015 -> 02:07 PM) Keeping Flowers for his "pitch framing" while he is horrible at literally every other facet of the game is the statistical equivalent of pissing on my shoes and telling me it's raining. You win this thread.
  17. QUOTE (Dick Allen @ Dec 2, 2015 -> 08:41 PM) Segura is horrible In his defense he has been through a lot with the death of his son. He hasn't quite been the same since it happened.
  18. Trading Anderson might make sense if the Sox then turn around and trade Q to restock the farm. I'm not at all advocating for this, but it seems like a logical potential move.
  19. Kind of surprised by this. I kind of liked the idea of a Flower/Avila platoon on paper. Others have beat me to it, but Lucroy is the catcher that instantly popped into my head as a potential trade target. I wonder if Milwaukee would be willing to trade him after the disaster of a season they had this year. Navarro is a slight offensive upgrade over Flowers, but he seems like a stopgap type of player for a position the Sox have zero depth at.
  20. QUOTE (flavum @ Nov 28, 2015 -> 09:30 AM) Any guesses on non-tenders this coming Wednesday? I could see Webb, Carroll, and Brantly non-tendered, but not sure if they really have to given their current 40-man. Carroll hands down. Don't see him sticking on the 40. But I wouldn't be surprised if Smith is removed either. Brantly is younger and at least has MLB experience. Smith did not exactly light the world on fire last year and is known to suffer in the defense department. He did not even earn a September call-up last year which I think has to say something in regards to how the Sox view him.
  21. Even if he was to leave the Royals, why would he have any desire to come to the Sox? I know money talks, but between the Royals, the Cubs, and the Sox, which team would you be more compelled to sign with from an organization standpoint?
  22. QUOTE (BlackSox13 @ Oct 24, 2015 -> 08:23 PM) My initial thought was " f*** that!". However, a straight up trade of Melky for Montero could be doable with Montero owed 28M and Melky 29MM through '17. The Sox could shift Eaton to LF and put Thompson in CF with Avi/Shuck/FA in RF. But does that trade really make the Sox any better? Thompson is far from a sure thing and his hot bat in September was polar opposite of what he's done in the minors.
  23. QUOTE (Chicago White Sox @ Oct 16, 2015 -> 07:05 AM) Both of those guys are worth significantly more than Frazier. If the Sox do go after Todd, it better for be minor leaguers. I'd actually be ok with a package like Montas, Micah (if the Sox seem Sanchez as our 2B), & Guerrero. I think we can afford to trade some minor league pitching as long as we hold onto Fulmer & Adams and as I mentioned Micah could be blocked. I don't think that deal would have gotten it done a few years ago, but it today's environment where prospects are coveted it just might work. Still risky given Frazier is only under control for 2 years and the upside of us guys involved on our end. Micah's inability to stay heathy is worrisome IMO because his success is dependent on those legs... That alone should make the Sox trade him while he still might have some potential value to someone. Sanchez is nothing special, but his D more than makes up or at the very least equals out his lack of hitting. I'd be perfectly fine with the Sox trading Micah in a package - and I was a huge Micah supporter in ST.
  24. QUOTE (Vance Law @ Oct 9, 2015 -> 06:48 PM) They aren't trading Quintana. In other news: The Rockies aren't trading Arenado. He had a hell of a year, but he is only a career .250-ish hitter away from Coors. I think he's not *quite* as good as his stats this year suggest. But I'd still probably make that trade if it was on the table.
  25. QUOTE (lasttriptotulsa @ Oct 8, 2015 -> 12:18 PM) Against RHP, LaRoche had a .697 OPS with 12 HRs and 37 RBIs. Shuck had a .694 OPS with O HRs and 14 RBIs. How exactly would replacing LaRoche's bat with Shucks help anything? Not exactly a strong argument because of the sample size, but Shuck had an OPS of .931 with runners in scoring position while LaRoche had a measly .631 OPS. When Shuck was in the lineup I always felt he at least had a chance to get on base despite being a average 4th OF. LaRoche was an automatic out this year. The Sox would have been better off batting the pitcher.
