  1. QUOTE (Eminor3rd @ Jan 11, 2012 -> 09:41 PM) Ton of interesting stuff on Cespedes' comps: http://claydavenport.com/?p=97 Wow. Interesting indeed. Seems like he should be a solid MLB player if all those projections are right.
  2. QUOTE (DirtySox @ Jan 11, 2012 -> 02:56 PM) Indeed. But that is perfectly fine. The depth in the system is awful. They need more signings like this. I'm very happy with it. I agree, it's nice to see a change.
  3. At 17, I think it's safe to safe he's a LONG ways away from making a difference. At least the Sox are spending more internationally.
  4. QUOTE (sunofgold @ Jan 10, 2012 -> 09:59 PM) Cubs got Maholm. $4.75M. He thinks that the CuBS have a chance in the Central. lol! Garza is good as gone. Hard to believe they would sign him for "insurance." But I wonder why he would pick the Cubs over Pirates, probably for the money is my guess.
  5. QUOTE (southsider2k5 @ Jan 9, 2012 -> 10:47 AM) Unsigned minor league FAs who were with Sox org last year Joe Bisenius Jason Bour Gookie Dawkins Freddy Dolsi Donny Lucy Derek Rodriguez Matt Zaleski Lucy retired.
  6. QUOTE (JPN366 @ Jan 7, 2012 -> 11:20 PM) Justin Edwards just couldn't progress. He had a horrible year in 2011, but I wish him well. Good guy. Looking over Birmingham's stats, he did have a pretty awful year, no surprise the Sox cut him. But I have to wonder, what are they thinking with Nevin Griffith? He averaged 8 BB/9 and walked more than he struck out. He was far worse. I know he's only 22, but still. Isn't that beyond helping at this point?
  7. QUOTE (caulfield12 @ Jan 7, 2012 -> 09:45 PM) Back to Moneyball. DH/1B/corner OFer's are much more easily replaced than C, SS/2B, CF. If you want to value Rizzo (still) as one of the best prospects in baseball, then the combination of Castro and Molina trumps that. We got rid of the Teahen mistake, and got a potentially very useful piece back in Zach Stewart. You never know, but there's a distinct possibility that Stewart (back in a relief role), Hernandez and Addison Reed might more than end up compensating for the losses of Santos and Frasor. We knew that Carlos Quentin had go to. You can complain all u want about losing Jackson and Buehrle, but there's also now the possibility of getting a pretty good haul back for Floyd and buying a "place holder" in the 5th spot to get us through 2012 while Molina, Castro, Axelrod, Petricka and Santiago all pitch their way onto the Top 5 prospect lists for the Sox. Sale at his upside trumps anything Buehrle could have done at 1/15th the cost. Viciedo is much cheaper than Quentin. We took someone we spent $25-50,000 on in Sergio Santos and leveraged him into a #2/3 starter for six years under cost control. If that move works out, and Castro/Stewart make it as the 4th/5th starter/s, then we've made up a lot of the ground we lost with Hudson and Gonzalez. There's no guarantees Gio could have succeeded at USCF. Plus we acquired Humber for absolutely nothing and we might have a #3/4 guy for the next 4 seasons. KW >>> Epstein/Hoyer If KW traded Beckham now or made a Zambrano move with Rios/Dunn and gave up 85% of their contracts, everyone would be screaming bloody murder...waiting until Dunn (especially) and Rios made the All-Star team in 2012 to say what a stupid move it was to sell both those guys for pennies on the dollar. Couldn't agree more with this. It'll be interesting to see how all these arms pan out. I'm actually excited for some youth insurgence on this team.
  8. QUOTE (Dick Allen @ Jan 7, 2012 -> 02:06 PM) On MLB Network yesterday, Heyman made it seem like this guy is a lock for Miami and he's going to get between $50 million and $60 million. They do have an opening in the OF, so it makes sense. I don't see how Bonafacio could play CF all year. Plus with Miami having a large Cuban community, I'd be surprised if he didn't have any interest in playing there. It would still be nice for the Sox to get him though.
  9. QUOTE (chisox2334 @ Jan 7, 2012 -> 04:24 AM) i gave the guy a day and nothing came to fruition. Now he wants the weekend lol. That and the fact no one else has picked up on it, this deal isn't happening.
  10. BA updated their transactions, no real losses for the Sox with their latest round of releases: - RHP Jamaal Hollis - RHP Sam Phippen - Stephen Sauer - Justin Edwards - 2B Drew Lee They also signed 3B Corey Smith; career minor leaguer.
  11. QUOTE (NorthSideSox72 @ Jan 6, 2012 -> 10:45 PM) Just confirmed, Bruney DID re-sign, per CSN Chicago: Brian Bruney: The Sox brought Bruney back on a minor-league contract with an invite to spring training after the righty posted a 5.87 ERA with the Sox in 2011. He had some decent results in the majors before regressing hard in his final few games, after which he was designated for assignment. He doesn't have much upside, but at least the Sox will be aware of what they're getting if he winds up in the 2012 bullpen. Ahh, thanks for that. I remember hearing he was interested in returning, but I never saw an official press release or something.
  12. QUOTE (NorthSideSox72 @ Jan 6, 2012 -> 10:31 PM) I doubt he picks up any FA's, unless they are at the minimum on minor league deals... Definite: Crain, Ohman, Thornton (unless traded), Reed Probable (IMO): Stewart If Thornton is traded, then add one of: Quintana, Santiago, Veal Then add one or two of the following (in no particular order): Dylan Axelrod (though I'd prefer he be starting in Charlotte, and may be in the rotation if Floyd is traded) Anthony Carter Deunte Heath Gregori Infante Nate Jones Jhan Marinez Dan Remenowsky Miguel Socolovich Brian Bruney Those are the guys who will see game innings in ST. Should be a fun horse race to watch. Socolovich is no longer in the organization. And I don't think Bruney was resigned. You could add Stults to the LHP group. Either way that's a big group of mediocre pitchers I've ever seen, and I bet this team has a revolving door of sorts for some spots in the bullpen.
  13. QUOTE (justBLAZE @ Jan 5, 2012 -> 11:23 PM) This guy picked it up, and looks like confirmed it from a different source. https://twitter.com/#!/Farrellball Guess we all get to wait until tomorrow.
  14. QUOTE (Elgin Slim @ Jan 5, 2012 -> 10:20 PM) Goldstein was on the Score and said that these rumors were complete crap, and there have been no talks between Sox/Jays about Floyd. Just some dude making stuff up and others running with the crap. I tweeted the rumor to him, looks like he looked into it. Too bad there is anything to this at all. Seemed like the Sox would have got two nice pitchers for the future. I would have really liked to have seen what Coop could do with Drabek.
  15. If true, that's not too bad of a return. Drabek is still fairly young, and reminds me a lot of Floyd when we first got him. Not to familiar with McGuire, but his stats look pretty decent. Looks like I'll be on Twitter and here all night...
  16. QUOTE (Crash73 @ Dec 26, 2011 -> 06:56 PM) C'mon! Very few sports people in HISTORY, have wanted to see his own team fail. Are you telling me Oz wouldn't have been happy with another WS ring? Ozzie said all he cares about is money and his dream for a yacht. I wish I could find a link, but he said a WS ring doesn't get you a free plane ticket to Spain. Money does, and he only cares about money. Ozzie is nuts if you ask me. I don't think he wanted to see the team fail, but he definitely wanted KW to fail. Plus had they been successful he would have had a harder time going to Miami and leaving the Sox.
  17. QUOTE (caulfield12 @ Dec 23, 2011 -> 10:20 PM) Cooper MIGHT NOT be able to fix Heath (no relation to Phillips). Maybe Greg Walker can? At least we know Heath will be able to dominate any Braves hitters.
  18. QUOTE (caulfield12 @ Dec 23, 2011 -> 09:39 PM) 1. Reed 2. Crain 3. Frasor OR Zach Stewart There's always the chance someone emerges from out of nowhere (like a Scott Radinsky or Boone Logan) and makes the team, but usually it's LH relievers who can jump like that. Soptic is getting some hype just like Nathan Jones did in the past, but there aren't many examples of RH relievers appearing out of thin air. Jenks and Santos are about as good for examples as any, and both were our pet projects. I think Crain is going to get the job, and Reed will take over middle of the year. Although, maybe they begin the year with a closer-by-committee?
  19. QUOTE (JPN366 @ Dec 22, 2011 -> 03:10 PM) I saw him in 2010. He's an okay reliever who deserves a long look in ST, but he wasn't worth protecting over Terry Doyle. That one's gonna bite KW on the a$$. The Braves simply cut him loose before the 2010 season due to him soliciting a prostitute and getting caught in a sting. Do you have any info on his stuff? All I can find is his fastball tops out around 96, but that was in an article from years ago when he was still with the Braves. His K rate seems to get better and better each year, but that walk rate is downright scary... I did find a video of him pitching this offseason:
  20. QUOTE (Tex @ Dec 22, 2011 -> 09:37 PM) If Danks extended with the Sox for Coop, did Mark go to Miami for Ozzie? I'm sure the familiarity was a factor. But remember, the Sox didn't even offer Buehrle a contract, so technically he didn't pick the Marlins over the Sox.
  21. QUOTE (DirtySox @ Dec 19, 2011 -> 10:24 PM) Kenny has already stated that more salary needs to be moved. I'm getting the feeling that he is only referring to Thornton. What are the chances the Sox try to go after Danks after next season? I was thinking about it. Pierzynski is off the books, Peavy's buyout is surely to be picked up. And if Thornton is moved, would that free up enough cash to give Danks a long-term deal with the money he's possible looking for? Obviously the Sox would have to hope their offer matches what other teams are willing to give, but call me crazy for thinking this *could* maybe be an option. There really doesn't seem to be all that much interest in him, and moving him for a less than ideal package seems kind of moot at this point. Everything on twitter seems directed at Gio/Garza.
  22. Good read. I've always been on the fence when it came to Jackson, but it seems like he was pretty clear of the whole thing. Pretty cool to see how he goes into that much detail about his batting stance.
  23. Some minor moves I haven't seen posted: SS Ray Olmedo and LHP Eric Stults were both signed to minor league deals. Olmedo is obviously a Triple-A filler. Stults got a spring training invite though. I could see him battling for a spot if/when Thornton is moved. Not exactly what I would call impressive...
  24. QUOTE (Kalapse @ Jul 9, 2010 -> 09:43 PM) Yeah because the Marlins want some terrible, mid 30's reliever? Give me a break. They're looking for good, young, cheap talent and that's exactly what Jor. Danks, Retherford, Morel and Marquez are. Danks is a toolsy outfielder who at the very bare minimum is a good national league 4th outfielder thanks to his speed and defense and thanks to his athleticism and pedigree he has some very nice upside. Retherford is a very versatile, grindy ballplayer who reminds me of Craig Counsell and I'm sure the Marlins would love to have that guy back only 15 years younger, well that's what CJ is. Morel is an excellent defensive 3B with a great eye, very good contact numbers and should develop some power, if he reaches his full potential he's a borderline all-star 3B, something the Marlins could use. Jeff Marquez is a left handed starter who could easily work out of the pen as a long man or a good lefty MR. Talented left handed pitching is hard to find and that's what we have here. There's no good reason why they wouldn't do this deal, they can't afford Johnson long term. That's a certainty and they should strike while the iron is hot: he's on a roll right now but that won't last forever, they should get the best package of young talent they can before he reverts back to his normal self. Trust me, they'd bite. Marquez is a RHP. Regardless, I still don't see how they would part with Johnson for that. Morel is the only piece to that trade that has upside. Danks is heating up again, but he hasn't shown much other than speed and his glove.
  25. QUOTE (PMD @ Jul 9, 2010 -> 06:11 AM) JUst checked that one out on I-Tunes, and that's it!! Thanks!!! So far I've got the classics: Let's Go White Sox, Na Na Hey Hey, Sweet Home Chicago, Thunderstruck and Back in Black. For the players I've got Paulie's "Harvester of Sorrow," Jenk's "Boom" and I use Metallica's "Of Wolf and Man" for AJP. The rest I found on the Sox site: http://mlb.mlb.com/cws/fan_forum/atbat_music.jsp Thanks for the link. I can never find that on the site, I don't know why.
