  1. QUOTE (Lemon_44 @ Nov 22, 2014 -> 02:45 PM) Contract, or not, I think it's silly to put Quintana on par with Sale or Trout. There are no metrics that could convince me otherwise. I think their contracts bear that out as well. There is a reason Trout makes what he makes and Quintana makes what he makes. I'm not saying anything bad about Quintana, to me, he's just not as good as those other guys. Hypothetically, I would guess if all 4 were on the FA market, the order in size of contracts offered would be Trout, Sale, Bruce, Quintana. Maybe I am missing your point. I don't think Balta is saying they are on the same level in terms of talent. Sale and Trout are among the 'elite' players. Q is among the 'very good' players. But Q's contract adds a level of financial flexibility that you would not normally be able to get with another player of his skill level. If Q hit free agency, he would make A LOT more than he is making now. That financial flexibility would allow a team to go out and use the money they would have normally had to invest in a player like Q into an additional area of need.
  2. QUOTE (Balta1701 @ Nov 21, 2014 -> 09:45 PM) Chris is under contract for 1 less year than Quintana, but he's put up 5.1 and 5.3 fWAR the last 2 years. If you believe Sale will repeat his last year, then Quintana is more valuable than Sale, hands down, but the difference is that Sale missed 4 weeks last year. If Sale was healthy all year last year with no difference in performance, he's a >7 fWAR pitcher, but we haven't seen that from him yet. It seems more likely with him than Quintana but that's where health comes in. But really, a good rule of thumb is...if you say "God no" to any trade proposal involving sale, you should say the exact same thing about Quintana. Sale should outperform Jose but he seems a higher injury risk based on his record, so if you weigh them about the same for trade value, Sale's trade Value and Quintana's trade value should be close enough that they're exchangeable. So, would you trade Sale as the key piece in a deal involving Jay Bruce? Literally there's no deal I can put together with the Reds roster that works, not with Cueto that close to FA. I wouldn't trade Sale as the key piece for Votto, so I wouldn't trade Quintana as the key piece for Votto. Their total value to the franchise is just about that close. The only reason you'd trade either of them is to remove the injury risk, and from the perspective of this thread, if you're worried about injury risk, how confident are you about a guy who struggled with knee injuries last year? This is approaching silly. No one with a lick of sense would trade Sale for a deal with Bruce as the centerpiece, so it's equally silly to trade Quintana for a package around him, let alone Quintana+. Great post.
  3. QUOTE (LittleHurt05 @ Nov 21, 2014 -> 09:41 PM) I refuse to trade for a Padres pitcher unless Petco Park comes with In all fairness, he did pretty well away from Petco last year.
  4. Hmmm... the 40 is full before this signing. I wonder if there is another move in the works, or will the Sox just trim some more dead weight off the roster?
  5. There is no way the Nats are going to trade Strasburg and in order to go after Scherzer. For one, the fans would form a mob. And a 1-2 punch of those two in a rotation is downright nasty. If they are going to shed salary, it's going to be Fister or Zimmermann.
  6. Wow, I like this A LOT.
  7. Sox could certainly do worse. He walks a ton, but he'd have to be a platoon player for sure.
  8. Trading Q for Bruce straight up is just not smart. I like Bruce, but he shouldn't command someone like Q coming off the year he's had (and I do not think Bruce is in decline). Bruce would certainly look nice batting behind Abreu though, talk about an upgrade from the left side of the plate. I still would not give Q up for him though. There has to be more to it than that, like the Sox also receiving a SP in return. Whether that comes from the Reds or a 3rd team is what makes this interesting.
  9. I think I'm more excited that Mitchell was kicked off the 40-Man. He honestly has no business being on it and another team would have to be nuts to claim him.
  10. I don't think he is. I think Montas has a better chance of being the closer-of-the-future then Petricka. And first and formost, I am all for Montas trying to make it to the MLB in a starting role.
  11. QUOTE (caulfield12 @ Sep 10, 2014 -> 08:08 PM) Because it's much easier to just keep Semien in that platoon role than giving up real talent for Dominguez? Just like it's probably better not to trade two starters for one in Castro unless it's abundantly clear that individual player is a HUGE upgrade at a position. Good point. I guess I don't really envision Semien being at 3B all that much.
  12. QUOTE (fathom @ Sep 10, 2014 -> 10:09 PM) He isn't even close to hitting breaking pitches of late. For as great of a season as he's had, it's disappointing to see his power completely disappear after the ASB He's probably tiring out and feeling the effects of a 162 game season. I think they play roughly 90 games or so in Cuba and the Sox's 96th game was July 13th.
  13. Why not keep Gillaspie and try trading for Dominguez? He might be easier to get than Castro. That's a R/L platoon I would like to see for the Sox.
  14. QUOTE (greg775 @ Sep 5, 2014 -> 10:31 PM) With me being too lazy to look it up, is he a top prospect or just another guy? First or second rounder? Think he has any hope to stick next year? He's 28 years old, so he's just right-handed competition for Danks. Used to be a pretty decent prospect for Oakland back in the day.
  15. QUOTE (winninguglyin83 @ Sep 2, 2014 -> 06:49 PM) Is Michael Taylor really a option for next season? I think maybe as 4th OF competition. Can't see him being anything more than that.
  16. QUOTE (Chilihead90 @ Sep 2, 2014 -> 03:50 PM) I honestly read the recaps no more then 3 or 4 times all season. That's not because they weren't informative, but rather because I went through every box score by myself anyway. Someone who doesn't have the time or patience to do so would get more use out of it. But what I DID check quite often was the FutureSox twitter account to see how some guys did each day. I would say damn near every day I would see a tweet, read it, and click the profile to see the other tweets. THEN I would go check the boxscores. The twitter account has been very helpful. I would agree with this post. I usually look up the box scores myself, so the daily recaps don't really do much for me. However, the tweets have been very enjoyable/informative.
  17. Looking at the way they handled Rodon in the minors (starting, not relieving) makes me think they had zero intention of using him in the MLB as a starter this year. Since Rodon is clearly more comfortable starting instead of relieving they must not want to take the risk by putting him in the MLB pen only to hurt his development. Look at Sale back in 2010. He started zero games in the minors, was called up, and came out of the bullpen. I think it makes sense not to force him into a role he clearly has no future with unless he busts. Makes sense in my head at least
  18. I don't like this rumor because V-Mart is having a career year and is going to demand a lot this offseason. I'd rather the Sox sign someone that can be a building block to the future, not handcuff themselves with another bad contract after finally getting rid of one (Dunn).
  19. QUOTE (Eminor3rd @ Aug 28, 2014 -> 12:23 PM) If Dunn moves, it's "cash considerations or PTBNL." So I caution, if you want Dunn to move, be prepared to accept that the best thing that will happen is someone else gets PT. That's really the only reason the Sox should be moving him. More AB's for someone with a future in this organization for the last month.
  20. QUOTE (Balta1701 @ Aug 21, 2014 -> 01:36 PM) Thank you Bowden for reading my comments from 3 weeks ago. That's what I said to myself when I read that: "wasn't this on Soxtalk not too long ago?" HAHA
  21. QUOTE (winninguglyin83 @ Aug 21, 2014 -> 06:20 PM) wanted Beckham to succeed. thought he would succeed. waited for him to succeed. Never happened. Could never hit the high fastball -- and never learned to lay off it. Didn't matter whether it was Walker, Manto or Steverson, he kept flailing and missing. Wish him the best, except against the White Sox. Could not have been said any better. I wanted Beckham to succeed really bad. He was so fun to watch against the Cubs when he got called up. Future looked bright, but he just never lived up to the hype. Glad the Sox made the smart move and freed up a spot to test Sanchez/Semien (maybe Johnson?). Now if only Dunn could be traded/DFA'd/euthanized so that DH spot can be used for the same. Wilkins really deserves a look.
  22. Finally. Maybe this is why he's sucked so bad this year.
  23. Didn't the Sox have interest in Santana when he was a free agent?
  24. QUOTE (caulfield12 @ Aug 8, 2014 -> 02:43 PM) They're not going to waive or send down Viciedo. They are much more likely to do that (DFA) with DeAza, IMO. Or simply send down Sierra until September. DeAza HAS to be living on borrowed time, one would think. Pretty sure the Sox can't send down Sierra. I think that's how the Sox got him from TOR to begin with. I hope it's De Aza.
  25. Really hope no big names for the Sox are on this list. I know the Sox have had to have juicers on past teams, it's naive to not think that, but it would still hurt if some of the bigger named players were implicated. It'll be interesting to see who this affects.
