QUOTE (winninguglyin83 @ Jul 14, 2016 -> 08:16 PM) Ranaudo seven scoreless, three hits and no walks tonight. He's more deserving than Turner. Yep. I thnk the guy has a chance at being legit MLB pitcher. Cant say the same for Turner.
-
QUOTE (Jake @ Jul 14, 2016 -> 01:13 PM) Ranaudo makes much more sense than Turner and IMO more sense than Fulmer Yep, glad someone else is on the same page as me. Ranaudo absolutely deserves the shot. He'll be out of options after this year so they might as well see what he can do for a start or two and maybe he can be a viable rotation piece or trade bait after this year.

QUOTE (Jerksticks @ Jul 14, 2016 -> 12:33 PM) Ridiculous. This has to be trolling but I'll bite. You present this like the front office said "Ajax is hurt, let's plug in Shuck amd count on 100% recovery from Ajax quickly. No need to try to improve the glaring hole." They've been trying to get an amazing center fielder long before the Jackson signing and the search hasn't stopped since they signed him. It's ludicrous to think that because of a media report NOW we know the White Sox are looking for a CFer. They've been looking for about 19 years. Not to mention that not many teams are looking or willing to sell players in May. It's hard to make a trade for a significant piece that early in the season.

QUOTE (shipps @ Jul 14, 2016 -> 11:35 AM) Why would the other guy do the jump off his shoulder move other than to just set him up for that? Iono I dont really understand wrestling. Are you implying that wrestling is fake or something?

QUOTE (Hatchetman @ Jul 14, 2016 -> 11:12 AM) he can be an idiot all he wants, just don't paralyze anyone in the process. That's true. She was at a very high risk of paralysis there. Has anybody heard? Is she in the hospital?

I'm not worried about losing Turner at all, but I think I'd rather give Anthony Ranaudo a shot. He's been pretty damn good this year (2.75 ERA before his last start where he gave up 6 ER) and they wouldn't have to expose him to waivers to send him back down. He hasn't pitched since the 8th so he should be good to go whenever. He's been bad in previous MLB callups but with him out of options next year, why not bring him up and see what he's got?

QUOTE (Dick Allen @ Jul 14, 2016 -> 09:41 AM) He does make a point. ESPN brought us the X Games, therefore, all their information must be superior. It's just as logical as any of his other posts. You mean to tell me that you have never noticed the strong correlation between skateboarding and Sabermetrics?

QUOTE (caulfield12 @ Jul 14, 2016 -> 09:19 AM) If that proprietary statistical information is so valuable, then why wouldn't ESPN or another sports information outlet like The Sporting News simply buy it and make it their own? When has ESPN ever cared about being the most statistically accurate channel/site? They cater to the casual fan. Casual fans are going to understand rWAR easier than fWAR especially when it comes to pitching Defense has evolved from Total Chances to Range Factor/UZR to Defensive Runs Saved...but each have their pluses and minuses. But to say DRS is the be-all and end-all is like saying Pythagorean is the best way to assess a manager's effectiveness or competency. I don't think anybody has ever said DRS is the be-all, end-all defensive statistic. As a matter of fact that kind of goes against what I said earlier as far as fWAR being more well regarded than rWAR. fWAR uses UZR for defensive ratings, not DRS. To totally discount another way of counting WAR doesn't make any sense when there's no more than 10-15 people at this entire site that could clearly and concisely tell the different between the two in five minutes or less to a "layman" or average baseball fan. I would be money that that is not true. ESPN has improved greatly in terms of delivering statistical information, compared to where they were even 5 or 10 years ago. Okay, I'll give you that one but they still have a hell of a long ways to go. If you took a poll and asked how many SoxTalk posters utilize FanGraphs at least once a week during the baseball season, or Baseball Prospectus, it's not going to be an extremely high number. I would guarantee you that is not true. I would bet more people on here use Fangraphs to look up a players stats than use ESPN. You are about the only person I've ever seen on here link to a players ESPN page or an ESPN stats leaders page. It doesn't help that their new site is clumsy as f***. Having ESPN's numbers more readily and easily accessible and available to the average fan makes "regular" baseball discussions more well-informed, so I'm not going to completely discount one version of WAR. Everyone is free to keep making the same arguments about which statistic is better, for example, FIP, xFIP, Siera, DIP, pFIP, etc., it's getting to be overwhelming trying to sort through all of it. And it creates more fans who are making authoritative statements who haven't even watched the player in question even play a single game. This is a valid point. There are a couple on here (not naming names) who you can tell the only baseball knowledge they have is from looking at fangraphs.

QUOTE (caulfield12 @ Jul 14, 2016 -> 08:22 AM) And because simply having a higher WAR in a limited number of at-bats doesn't automatically mean it could be extrapolated out over a full season for a bench player. It doesn't matter. If a guy puts up 1 WAR in 10 games and then plays at replacement level the rest of the year he still puts up 1 WAR for the season. We're 85+ games into the season and there are 87 MLB outfielders that have put up a higher WAR than Puig. Somehow you want to rank Puig higher because it took him more at bats to be as productive as somebody who only plays part time? There is no justification that you can give that will say Puig has been a good player this year. And yet you want to give up resources for a basically replacement level player who is owed another $20 million over the next couple years and is a head case? And your ESPN comment is one of the funnier things I've ever read on here.

QUOTE (caulfield12 @ Jul 13, 2016 -> 05:29 PM) Well, not every prediction is going to be right...and just because a player has all the tools in the world doesn't mean they're going to take advantage of them. I remember back in 1985, I must have bought 100 Eric Davis rookie cards thinking he was going to be the next Mays/Mantle. Didn't happen. By WAR, Puig's at 1.0 (and looking at around 1.5-2.5 for a full season assuming he stays healthy and continues his recent improved play). That would place him 34th out of 53 in the category (qualified number of AB's). Not nearly up to the standards of his first two seasons, but if a bunch of "Avi Garcia could do that in his sleep in RF" posts come up, it will be pretty amusing. In the context of AL MLB outfielders, 48th-51st out of 197 total players. So, if that's not a starting outfielder, I'm not sure what is. 1. I think many here will take you more seriously if you start using fWAR instead of rWAR as most consider it superior. 2. Why do you always say things like "that would place him 34th out of 53 in the category (qualified number of AB's)? WAR is essentially a counting stat. A player who has .6 fWAR across 150 PAs is more valuable than a player with .5 across 300. You can't discount him because he doesn't qualify for whatever arbitrary minimum number of PAs you choose. That would be like stripping the guy of a home run crown because he didn't have 500 PAs. 3. Using the superior fWAR and ignoring a minimum number of PAs, Puig has a fWAR of .3 (roughly .5 to .6 over the full year). That ranks him 88th among all outfielders. That is pathetic. Saladino has put up a .2 fWAR is well less than half the number of PAs.

Jose Fernandez claims hes gonna serve one up to Ortiz if he gets the chance. s*** like that and we're really supposed to take this serious and have it mean something? Give me a break. -
QUOTE (Ezio Auditore @ Jul 12, 2016 -> 08:56 AM) Every few months, my debit card information gets compromised and a bunch of purchases get made in Georgia or Texas somewhere and I have to get a new debit card. I'm never responsible for the charges thankfully, but god damn is this annoying. Every major retail data breach (Target, Home Depot, etc.) I've had my cards compromised and had to get new ones. It's probably about the 10th call I've had to make. I've had it happen to me before too. I tried getting money out of the ATM one day and it came back insufficient funds. Checked my bank account online and it was negative up to my overdraft limit. There were a couple plane tickets to China purchased and a few odd less than a dollar purchases at random places. Apparently they make real small unnoticeable charges to verify the card number works before they make the big purchase. That's what the bank said anyways. It got straightened out pretty quickly but it sucked having to get by a few days without any money and it sucked having to explain to people why checks I had written them had bounced and why certain automatic withdrawals were returned.

QUOTE (greg775 @ Jul 11, 2016 -> 02:00 PM) Just think if we had Anderson, Semien and Trayce! Wow we'd be excited and praising our system. Instead, two horrific trades letting Trayce and Semien go. As much as we rail on our system, we had 3 studs right there home grown and let two go. Have you looked at Trayce Thompson's stats lately. He is not very good. Other than a hot two week stretch in May he has been pretty horrible this year. Take out that hot stretch and he has an anemic .202/.283/.362 slash line. He is far from a stud and probably should not be an every day player.

I haven't given two s***s about the home run derby in years but I'll probably tune in to watch Frazier. Chris Berman does his best to make the derby completely unwatchable. The day he finally gets put out to pasture will be a day for all sports fan to rejoice.

So the suspect who was killed was named Micah Johnson age 25. Pretty sure it's not the same guy. -
7/8/16 - Braves @ White Sox - 7:10 - CSN+

QUOTE (SoCalSox @ Jul 8, 2016 -> 09:59 AM) Not sure I see them being 5 games back of the division with a sweep, simply because that would involve Cleveland losing 2 of their last 3 from the Yankees but 6 games back of the division in 2nd place while 2 games or less back from a wild card spot would be very ideal all things considered. I still want to be realistic & say 2 of 3 but man, it would sure be nice to get this sweep going into the break, especially with them facing Anaheim coming out of the break. You're right. I was thinking they were 6 back right now when I posted that and was giving Cleveland 2 of 3 this weekend. My bad. Either way, 6 back with 74 games to go and adding Austin Jackson and Justin Morneau after the break is not a bad spot to be in. I know a lot of people want to sell, but this team is still in it. One big trade or a couple of smaller ones and they could be sitting pretty. Just can't have another stretch like they did in late May, early June. -
5 series wins in a row, let's make it 6. With Sale and Quintana both going there is zero excuse to not win this series. Let's sweep these clowns and go into the break at 47-41 coming off a 14-5 run. If we sweep we should be within ~2 of the wild card and ~5 of the division. That would have to make us buyers. Both the division and the wild card are there for the taking. Let's root for some Tigers, Rays, Yankees, Athletics and Mariners wins this weekend! Sale vs Braves (never faced as a team) Aybar - 1-11, 1 2B, 2 K (.091/.091/.182) Francoeur - 3-21, 1 HR, 2 RBI, 3 BB, 2 K (.143/.280/.286) Markakis - 4-11, 1 2B, 3 RBI, 1 BB, 1 K (.364/.500/.455) Pierzynski - 0-3, 1 K (.000/.000/.000) Wisler vs White Sox (never faced as a team) Navarro - 3-3, 1 2B (1.000/1.000/1.333)

QUOTE (greg775 @ Jul 7, 2016 -> 02:24 PM) I knew it!! I just knew it. After seeing pictures of the guy he looked like the biggest teddy bear you could imagine. He just didn't seem the type to pull a gun out on somebody for not buying his DVD. I was thinking it had to be he felt like he was getting robbed or something we hadn't heard about. It turns out he did NOTHING wrong. This is a travesty that he was assassinated. The cops need to be charged with murder today! With no bail. These incidents are proving it's not that safe to legally carry a gun cause you will be murdered by cops if you happen to get pulled over in your car or approached. Apparently they go into killer mode when near a legally owned gun. 1. You don't know what assassinated means. A common citizen can never be assassinated. 2. This guy was no teddy bear. He was a career criminal who was convicted of sexual assault against a minor and had other arrests for assault, domestic battery, unlawful entry and felony weapon charges. 3. This guy could not legally carry or own a firearm for the reasons expressed in number 2. Do I think the cops were justified in this killing? Judging the evidence we've seen, probably not. But there are still a lot of missing pieces. That being said I really am not going to cry myself to sleep over the death of a child rapist.

Carson Fulmer "in play" for second half
lasttriptotulsa replied to Whisox05's topic in Pale Hose Talk
QUOTE (shysocks @ Jul 7, 2016 -> 09:12 AM) This is a good point. Anyway, why start his clock? Blah this gives me a bad taste. It depends on what their plan for next year is. If they are planning on Fulmer being in the Majors at the start of the season then bringing him up this year does nothing to his clock. -
QUOTE (Brian @ Jul 2, 2016 -> 05:38 PM) I waited all night for November Rain and it was the only song I was disappointed in. Piano sounded tinty, seemed like Axel forgot lines, and no Slash solo. Maybe just me. I was at the show as well. You are remembering wrong on the no Slash solo thing. All solos were present and accounted for. Overall I thought it sounded pretty good. A hard song to pull of live for sure. On a side note, Steven Adler played two songs with GNR last night in Cincy. Played Out Ta Get Me and My Michelle. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=z7sInic8ZFA He definitely has a better feel for the songs than Ferrer does though I don't think it would be possible for Adler to handle a full 2.5 hour show anymore. I think Ferrer is a good drummer he just pushes the tempo a bit much for GNR.

Who will represent the Sox at the ASG?
