QUOTE (Marty34 @ Feb 4, 2014 -> 08:00 PM) So what. Dynamite drop in Marty.

That seems like a fair estimate.

Asking Prices Beginning to Fall

QUOTE (Marty34 @ Feb 4, 2014 -> 01:27 PM) With the price these guys are going to sign for, there's no upside to waiting for next year. Are you one of these people that go to the store and buy something you don't need just because it was on sale? -
QUOTE (Joxer_Daly @ Feb 4, 2014 -> 09:34 AM) Someone else famous probably needs to die so we can move the thread on from this petty ridiculousness. Joan Mondale, 83. Is she famous enough for us to move on? Probably not. http://www.washingtonpost.com/national/joa...5267_story.html

I think that core along with cheaper veteran free agent complimentary players could be enough to win starting in 2015 or 2016. We still need to address the catching situation, which is where stop gap type FAs can come in, but overall I think the Sox have put themselves in a good position for the next few years. Of course, this is based on whether the young players develop into what we think they will. It is possible that Eaton, Davidson, Garcia, Semien and Johnson all flop and then we really aren't any better off than we were last year.

Asking Prices Beginning to Fall

The thought of signing a 37 year old Bronson Arroyo to a 3/24 contract makes me wanna barf. He is a Major League average pitcher whose main redeeming quality is that he takes the mound every 5th day and throws 200 innings. If the Sox planned on competing this year and needed a 5th starter and he could be brought in cheap, I'd say okay. But none of that is happening, so no thanks. We've been over Santana again and again. I'm done with that broken record so I won't even comment on him. My best offers to Arroyo and Santana $0/0 years. -

QUOTE (Steve9347 @ Feb 4, 2014 -> 07:59 AM) Jo lost his s*** last night. I would certainly think a fine is forthcoming. I wouldn't be entirely surprised if he also received a one game suspension. The NBA seems to hand out suspensions as often, if not more, than any other sport and I don't think they'll be too happy about a player pointing at each official and yelling f*** you one by one. I agree with Jo though. The officiating was horrendous last night, and really has been all year. -
QUOTE (LittleHurt05 @ Feb 4, 2014 -> 07:58 AM) That's just ridiculous, this isn't the NBA. Do you know what happened the last time the Sox won 79 games in a season? They drafted Chris Sale with the following year's draft pick. That mediocrity sure destroyed the franchise. Sure your odds are better of hitting on a pick when you draft in the top 3, but there are great players all over the draft and internationally. And one player doesn't determine a franchise's entire future success like in other sports. This. The development of the young players and the improvement of Viciedo, Beckham, etc. it would require for the Sox to finish anywhere near .500 is much better for the overall health of the franchise than the difference between say a 3 and a 10 draft pick. I personally feel that the Sox are going to finish around 75 wins (+/- a couple) and I am okay with that. That sets them up nicely to atleast have a chance at competing in 2015, which I think was probably their goal all along.

2013-2014 NHL thread

The abundance of Hawks games on WGN this year is really starting to irritate me. Instead of having the pleasure of watching a good Hawks victory, I had to endure the agony of watching that Bulls crapfest last night. -
QUOTE (caulfield12 @ Feb 1, 2014 -> 09:40 AM) http://espn.go.com/mlb/stats/batting/_/pos...ARBR/order/true You're missing Puig at 5.0 I'm assuming those are fWAR numbers. Puig "only" had a 4.0 fWAR.

QUOTE (Jose Abreu @ Jan 31, 2014 -> 03:46 PM) Read, buddy. I said SOME. You have not said the word "some" one time in this entire thread until this post. So why don't you read buddy. Nobody forgot Buehrle's perfect game.

QUOTE (staxx @ Jan 27, 2014 -> 03:46 PM) I don't see the sox letting Nieto going back to the nats. They'll find a way to keep him. With that being said, I think it's whoever performs the best in ST that wins the job at this point They seem to really like Nieto. If he doesn't make the opening day roster, I'd imagine the Sox will try to work out a trade. It probably wouldn't take all that much to keep him.

QUOTE (Marty34 @ Jan 31, 2014 -> 05:32 PM) It's the militant SABR bunch I worry about, ScottyDo. The others I can fend off. You might think you're fending them off, but really they're just laughing at you.

QUOTE (Marty34 @ Jan 31, 2014 -> 04:13 PM) Why suffer through another Dunn AB when you don't have to? I think he's the most entertaining guy on the team to watch hit. Sure he's going to strike out a lot, but there is still that 1 in 20 chance he's going to hit a bomb. I'd much rather watch a guy like that than a little slap hitter who hits .300.
-
QUOTE (Jose Abreu @ Jan 31, 2014 -> 06:52 AM) Because we forgot a lot of these, so I'm just making a list of everything we can remember. What's this "we" s***? The only thing that has come up so far that I don't remember vividly is AJ scoring from 1st on a ground ball. Those are the types of things that should be on this sort of list. Even the most casual fans are going to remember that Buehrle threw a perfect game or the Blackout Game. Moments like those are in no way "forgotten White Sox moments".

QUOTE (Eminor3rd @ Jan 30, 2014 -> 02:42 PM) The problem is that your junked Adam Dunn car is still the best way you currently have to get to work. Nice.
-
I love how everybody thinks that the guy who had the highest OPS on the team last year is the problem. Yea, maybe he's no longer worth the $15 million he's getting paid, but the talk of just cutting him and absorbing the cost is just ridiculous. And anybody who even suggests that Dunn was the reason the Reds and Nationals weren't making the playoffs when he was putting up his .900+ OPS seasons is a f***ing moron.

QUOTE (MexSoxFan#1 @ Jan 30, 2014 -> 09:38 AM) I was planning on going to this game but then Rose got hurt and my second favorite Bull got shipped off Marquis Teague was your second favorite player? -
QUOTE (Steve9347 @ Jan 29, 2014 -> 05:27 PM) I don't have HD televisions in my house to watch s***ty, low-definition streams that cut in and out. Exactly. Couldnt agree more. I occasionally will watch one of those feeds if a game is on WCIU or another channel that i dont get, but no way i could do it for every game.

QUOTE (Steve9347 @ Jan 29, 2014 -> 02:01 PM) A legit, oh my goodness we have a stud, starting goaltender is pretty hard to find. Crawford is not, and never has been, said guy. Sadly, he's now paid like it. The only goaltenders who will make more than Crawford (next season) are: Pekka Rinne Jonathan Quick Roberto Luongo Cam Ward Ryan Miller Kari Lehtonen Tuuka Rask Oh my, does Crawford belong nowhere near that list of talent. Don't forget Henrik Lundqvist too. His new deal pays him $8.5 million per year. *edit* his cap hit is $8.5 million per year, his actual salary next year is $11 million. -
QUOTE (Y2HH @ Jan 29, 2014 -> 01:32 PM) For two people?! I can't go to a bar/pub by myself and spend less than 20$, and that's what I spend before I'm about to play an actual league hockey game. Going out to watch a game?! That's like 2-4 hours depending on the sport...and 4-5 bud lights isn't all I'd be drinking, not to mention eating...plus tip. Must be location. I live in a town of around 1000 people and I can go to the bar and have 5 craft beers with a burger and fries for around $20 including tip. Since it's such a small town, everybody knows everybody and if you're a regular typically every 3rd or 4th beer is on the house.

QUOTE (bmags @ Jan 29, 2014 -> 01:45 PM) Thome played for 25 years? No he played 22, but if you count his split seasons as a year for each team it just adds up that way.
-
Indians. No questions asked. Personally I think it's kind of dumb for Maddux to go in with no logo. He played more years with the Braves, won 3 of his 4 Cy Young there, won his only World Series ring there and his numbers are far superior as a Brave than as a Cub.

QUOTE (Jenksismyb**** @ Jan 29, 2014 -> 10:07 AM) Not sure if that's true either. A lot of people watch ESPN. But most people watch other things. For me at this point losing ESPN wouldn't be as damaging as losing CSN or BTN. Yep, I honestly couldn't care less about losing ESPN. The only things I ever watch on there are when the Packers are on Monday night, the Bulls are on or the rare occasion the Sox are on. For those few events per year, I could make due by going to my parents or a buddies house, or going to the bar.

QUOTE (Jenksismyb**** @ Jan 29, 2014 -> 09:59 AM) Nah, that would be suicide for them. They make more money charging every cable customer in the country $5 bucks. That's why the a la carte theory is never going to happen. Everyone involved - the cable companies, networks, studios, etc. - all make more money in the current system. This. There is legislation in the works to try and force cable and satellite providers to off a la carte programming, but most of the "experts" don't think it will help anything. Because the cable channels will lose so many subscribers that are in effect forced to purchase their product due to the current cable and satellite structure, the prices that they charge per subscriber would go through the roof. Yes, you might be able to pick and choose and just pay for the 10-20 channels that most people watch with regularity, but the cost per channel would have to be so high that overall you would end up paying just as much, if not more, than the current structure. This would also have a trickle down effect to Netflix and Hulu as well. With A&E, AMC, etc losing so many subscribers, they would have to pass the costs on to Netlix and Hulu and then Netflix and Hulu's prices would end up rising as well.
