That's true, 4/$50M is cheaper than what it will cost for a similar pitcher next season, which is why next year it would be a really, really bad idea to do it, whereas this year it was only a really bad idea to do it.

I don't know who "stuck up" for Adam Dunn. I'm as much of a fan of Dunn as anybody, and I freely admit he hasn't lived up to his contract. If anything, he's the poster child for why signing Jimenez would have been a bad idea. I do know that a lot of people "stuck up" for Dunn by saying that the Sox shouldn't just release him, because $15M/0.4 WAR is better than $15M/0.0 WAR, but that's just because the $15M was already spent.

If we really want to make it fair, it's the salary/WAR of Jimenez vs the salary/WAR of Noesi + the salary/WAR of the second round draft pick.

If you eliminate posts about attendance or Ubaldo Jimenez that cuts out another 650K.

If somebody is indeed on the loose, then yes, the local media within a certain radius most definitely need to report his name. Did not apply in this case though. I don't agree with "we need to know who did it and why they did it." Now law enforcement needs to know, the college/business/organization on whose property this occurred needs to know, his family needs to know, but what is gained from you and I knowing anything about this guy? I'm nowhere near an expert on anything to the point that knowing the guys name/age/background gives me any more insight than not knowing.

I don't think any pitcher who costs a draft pick to sign and is in that price range is a good gamble. You either have to get an elite pitcher and give up the draft pick, or gamble on another guy like Paulino. Aside from losing the draft pick, the problem with Jimenez is that you put all your eggs in his basket for four years. You're stuck paying the money plus stuck with him taking the roster spot. With Paulino, his salary is low enough that you can just cut him loose and move on, giving the opportunity to guys like Carroll or Surkamp, or going out and finding a guy like Noesi.

I've never owned a gun. I've never even held a gun. I can't tell you what the terms shotgun, rifle, handgun, semi-automatic weapon, or automatic weapon mean for certain. I can say this: I don't think it's unreasonable to ban any weapon that allows you to get off more than 10 shots without having to take significant time to reload. The primary justifiable uses for weapons are self/property defense and for hunting, and I can't think of a need to get off more than 10 shots in those situations, though like I said, I've never used a gun so if you are aware of such situations please educate me. While I think the larger issue is how we deal with mental illness in general, as it pertains to weapons I would say that we need to find a way to prevent people with certain mental illnesses from legally owning weapons of any sort while imposing as little rights infringement as possible on the rest of us.

One month is half of the season that has been played so far. That's why I minimized the impact of DL time in my grades. It's not logical to assume that somebody who has missed half of the season to date will miss half of the rest of the season if they have already come off the DL.
