  1. With the latter type of violence, there is almost no risk to the average American. You don't go into neighborhoods where gang violence occurs, so while the concept of gang violence might be disturbing, it doesn't affect you personally. With the former type of violence, we care more because we go to schools, malls, and movie theaters where this kind of stuff happens, even though it's still a small percentage of gun deaths in the nation.
  2. I had this argument with a couple friends on FB last night. They are both left wing and very excited to be rid of Cantor. I noted that the guy that beat him is even farther right, and unlike the Mourdock/Lugar fiasco in Indiana, moving farther to the right is not going to cost the Republicans this election. Cantor and Boehner are two of the main reasons that I ever got to go back to work. A few more people like Brat in the House, and the government shutdown might still be going.
  3. If Dodgers ate half the money, yes.
  4. The exact same thing can be used to describe many Christians.
  5. Probably not on the same day.
  6. They all believe different things about them though.
  7. Disclaimer: I didn't watch the game and only saw the boxscore and read this discussion. If you look at all of Sale's innings this year, you can probably count on one hand the number of them where he allowed 3+ baserunners in an inning. Once that point was reached, it should have been pretty obvious that Sale was no longer himself. Now, I'm not going to go out and proclaim that Robin is a terrible manager because of this decision, but it seems evident that a pitching change needed to be made.
  8. Some people have started following and giving structure to that belief. That's the point.
  9. Sox lineup: Eaton 8, Beckham 4, Gillaspie 5, Abreu 3, Dunn DH, Ramirez 6, Viciedo 9, DeAza 7, Flowers 2; Noesi 1
  10. Yes, but they probably had a few guys in the same boat who were HS guys they really liked but weren't likely to sign. At least one of them will still be there in Round 14. Rounds 11-13 are still good spots to find talent that you can sign. By Round 14 you aren't sacrificing as much to take him.
  11. It's not in MLB's best interests to allow kids to re-enter the draft every year. They get their first shot out of HS. If they choose not to sign, they don't get their second shot for 3 more years, which would be after the third year of college for most kids. Then if you still don't sign you can be drafted again the following year.
  12. I just wonder what Rodon gains by waiting to sign? He signs now and there is a very good chance he gets a September call-up. He waits a month to sign and he delays free agency by a lot more than a month. How much over slot does he have to get to make it worth it?
  13. I don't know. Are they even from the same 'hood?
  14. I don't think this argument has been brought to the forefront for "so many". I see very, very few others suggesting that we entirely do away with civil marriage. I think that marriage equality making the headlines that it has provided the platform for people to reach an audience that wouldn't have listened previously.
  15. We should have scrapped the idea of civil marriage a long time ago. The gay marriage debate simply serves as an impetus to bring the issue to the forefront.
  16. Yes, like everything else in the legal system judges need criteria that can be consistently applied, and there needs to be an appeals process when judges seem to vary too far outside the lines.
  17. It's a consistently-applied regulation and it cuts down on divorces. Sounds like a win-win.
  18. Only 21% of the people are incredibly stupid. I think this country is making some progress!
  19. Or maybe everybody should have to file a petition and have a judge determine that they are fit for marriage. Maybe that cuts down on the divorce rate.
