I don't see the sox letting Nieto going back to the nats. They'll find a way to keep him. With that being said, I think it's whoever performs the best in ST that wins the job at this point

I could see Garcia being Jermaine Dye 2.0

Eaton Ramirez Garcia Dunn Abreu Viciedo Davidson Beckham Nieto

QUOTE (witesoxfan @ Jan 27, 2014 -> 08:41 AM) You legitimately think that a high school prospect won't help for 6 years? Meanwhile, people have already (incorrectly) talked about Tyler Danish, a high school pick in the 2nd round, pitching in the majors this year. He could legitimately get a cup of coffee next year and could be a significant piece of the puzzle come 2016. If it's not till 2017, that's realistic too. By all standards, if said high school player is taken in the 2nd, expecting him in the majors by 2018 is completely reasonable. They may bust - that's the nature of the beast. I'd still rather have that plus the allotted money to that slot than counting on anyone past the 10th round to contribute instead. If we're taking him with the #3 overall pick, he had better not take 6 years.... I think 4 is more realistic, probably as you said with his first cup of coffee in 3.5, barring injury or anything unforseen of course.

QUOTE (Eminor3rd @ Jan 26, 2014 -> 03:48 PM) By fWAR, Santana's 2013 was his third best season. He is overrated. The big dogs are ALWAYS on the prowl for free agent pitching. Let them overpay for it. We lost 99 games and have a glut of young SPs that need innings. Why you want to create a roster logjam at the cost of $60m and an early second round pick is beyond all of us. Especially when your 2nd round pick will likely be a 1st round talent due to being such a high pick.

QUOTE (GreenSox @ Jan 25, 2014 -> 07:23 PM) Utter insanity to pay big money and a draft pick for inconsistent pitchers like Santana or Jiminez. We've made good progress. Keep doing it. edit: ERVIN santana... mind fart moment.... no reason to sign him, bad idea. What about Johan Santana? He likely wouldn't cost much due to injury issues. He might be someone i'd take a flyer on with coop/herm running the show. I'm not signing anyone that requires draft pick comp.

QUOTE (kev211 @ Jan 25, 2014 -> 07:56 PM) Just going to use this thread for this question. Do we know what jerseys the sox are going with on Sundays this year? Also I hope they keep the 1983 jerseys around in some capacity. I hope they bring back the 05 Vests

QUOTE (elrockinMT @ Jan 25, 2014 -> 03:32 PM) He will have a breakout season this year Unfortunately we have been saying this for a few years now. I hope he does, he's a great guy.

QUOTE (Balta1701 @ Jan 25, 2014 -> 02:03 PM) But a guy who is farther away is simply going to be a higher risk. A guy 4-5 years away has 4-5 years of risks of injury and other things going wrong. On top of that, guys who are near MLB ready have been playing against older, higher-quality competition already themselves, so that gets thrown into the assessment as well. True as well. I personally think that we should take Turner. I'm not sold on Hoffman and he was who I was referring to.

QUOTE (Marty34 @ Jan 25, 2014 -> 01:54 PM) My first thought after hearing this possible strategy is that they won't take Kolek even if he is the consensus pick at 3 because he's too far away from the Majors. Taking him at 3 is the total opposite of the ML-ready prospects they've acquired via trade. i don't think that's the right approach to the draft. Drafting players that are near MLB ready are usually the "safe" picks that end up being the Lance Broadways of the world. Take the best player with the highest ceiling. Don't worry about being able to contribute right now.

QUOTE (Baron @ Jan 23, 2014 -> 08:39 PM) I'm slightly disturbed that we're talking about signing Jimenez to a multi year 40 million dollar contract I can't even believe there is 6 pages of it.... If we sign someone, it'll be a Tommy Hanson on a 1 year deal with low salary. NOT 40 mil on a mediocre pitcher
-
Players at where we will be drafting for the pick we'd give up are gonna be HIGH talent players. Not even close to being worth Jimenez or anyone like that. Pass.
-
Risks like that are how you get yourself into another mess like the one we were in before this off-season. Did I want him? Yes. At that ridiculous contract? No.

QUOTE (JoshPR @ Jan 21, 2014 -> 07:11 PM) Sale, Tanaka, and Quintana make a nice 1-3. Ranks slides to 4 and let rienzo/Johnson/paulino battle for 5 I highly doubt it would be much of a battle. More than likely would be Johnson's spot to lose barring a horrible performance by him coupled with one of the other two blowing them out of the water. Johnson won't go to the bullpen and there really isn't any point in sending him to AAA when he's ready now, with a likely non-competing team.

QUOTE (RockRaines @ Jan 21, 2014 -> 03:40 PM) Guessing, false info, the internet. Pick your poison. The Sox have heard jack s***, so I assume everyone else is in the same boat. much better than them hearing that they are no longer in contention haha

QUOTE (Quinarvy @ Jan 21, 2014 -> 01:37 PM) Rock said our limit was $20M a year. If the high offer is $120M/6 from the Cubs, well "blowing away the field" could mean blowing away the Yankees, Dodgers, and Dbacks. The only people who have said anything about Tanaka regarding the Sox other than "won't happen" are Hahn, Kenny, bucket, and Rock. How can the Sox offer be blown out of the water when only the front office, Tanaka, and Close know what it is? Exactly why random twitter posts are useless right now. I'm more optimistic because of the fact that we are not seeing a ton of garbage and the sox.

Pretty surprised to see Adolfo ahead of Engel and Trey at this point. More of being high on Adolfo or tempered expectations for the other 2 right now?
-
QUOTE (Jake @ Jan 21, 2014 -> 01:10 PM) Is signing PK, Abreu, and Tanaka plus trading for Avi Garcia, Adam Eaton, and Matt Davidson enough to get an early season attendance boost? The moves that Hahn has made have probably increased the games ill go to this year from 1-3 to 5-8 already. Add in Tanaka and i'd probably consider a few more.

ShandyMan replied to The Ultimate Champion's topic in Pale Hose Talk
No reason not to give him a minor league deal. I bet it's announced around/at soxfest. -

QUOTE (Realfan @ Dec 23, 2013 -> 06:03 PM) Or Quintana. even better, considering Surkamp probably was a higher regarded prospect than either of them.
