QUOTE(whitesoxfan101 @ Oct 24, 2006 -> 11:51 PM) My response to you is then is this. I know he's a solution to LF and a stud, but is Crawford a leadoff man solution? I know his OBP was solid last year with that high average, but he doesn't walk all that much, has a lousy career OBP, and the small OF at The Cell will turn some doubles and triples at the Trop into outs, lowering the average and OBP. It's a good question. Crawford's a lot more like Grady Sizemore than he is a Scott Podsednik. I think the impressive thing with him this season is that his OBP went up 17 points to .348. Podsednik in 2005 had a .351 OBP. At the Cell you could see that power rise even more, so he could possibly go from hitting 18HR's this season, to say 20-25 next season with around 55 steals, and an OBP around the .340-.345 mark, which would make him a very valuable commodity for us, I came up with the idea of trading John Danks (acquired as part of the Contreras deal) and Josh Fields for him. Whether Tampa would go for that I don't know, but it's an interesting scenario.

QUOTE(southsider2k5 @ Oct 24, 2006 -> 09:54 PM) So the Dow goes over 12,100 yesterday with another big trading day... Don't expect much right now as the fed is meeting which means zzzzzz from stocks until the announcement is made. The big note from yesterday in the world of big round numbers is that Berkshire Hathaway closed at $100,000 per Class A share yesterday for the first time ever. When Warren Buffett took over the company in 1965 the stock was at $18 a share, or a return of 555,500% on that original share price... not bad. Now that's what you call a nice investment. The big stocks down here the last year or 2 in our sharemarket have basically been the steel stocks. A company like BHP Bilition 2 years ago was about $14 a share. Now it's worth $28, basically just because of the huge demand for steel in countries like China. Rio Tinto's another as 2 years ago that was about $38 now it's almost $80. And our All Ordinaries Index have been reaching records highs over the past couple of months from time to time as well.

QUOTE(whitesoxfan101 @ Oct 24, 2006 -> 11:46 PM) All the info in that post confused the hell outta me to be honest, but it reminds me that man I can't wait to see what we do this offseason. Haha, yeah I've sort been posting that scenario a bit over the past week. Basically what I came up with was moving 2 starters, to allow you to trade for Crawford and find a 5th starter from somewhere. Getting a guy like Saito makes that possible. But I think first and foremost, KW is going to get a nice piece for the bullpen and that guy will probably be Justin Speier.

Any realistic way to upgrade the starting pitching?

QUOTE(whitesoxfan101 @ Oct 24, 2006 -> 11:44 PM) Yeah, the Phils will regret the Moyer deal, but not because of the age and money like people think is why it'll end up dumb. They'll regret it when he gives up 30 homers or so the next 2 years and sees his ERA up around 5. He gave up 33 HR's this season, and only 13 of those were at Safeco in 15 starts. I wouldn't be suprised moving from pitching half his games at Safeco to Citizens Bell, plus being a year older, that number rises to around 40 next season. But it shows how much of a premium and in demand getting starting pitching is. -
QUOTE(whitesoxfan101 @ Oct 24, 2006 -> 11:38 PM) Saito had better numbers than Matsuzaka?? Sign him up, after all, our last signing from Japan has gone pretty well. I just read a recent article that said the Seibu Lions were expecting Saito to join their rotation next season, so not sure what the deal is with him being posted or not. He was brutal in 04, but good in 05 (haven't seen his stats for this season FWIW). But it gives credence to the thought of trading Garcia to say the Mets or Padres for Milledge or Carillo / more prospects, and possibly dealing another starter like Contreras to get you that stud prospect to help you acquire Carl Crawford, then you could sign a Saito to fill in as that 5th starter while you let the likes of Broadway to be able to continue their development down at AAA.

QUOTE(greg775 @ Oct 24, 2006 -> 05:17 PM) We desperately need somebody like Kenny Rogers/Jamie Moyer. What do you guys have against signing Redman to a cheap deal and see what he can do as a veteran? Sometimes it's about more than numbers. He didn't pitch that bad this past year with woeful (except against the Sox) KC. Jamie Moyer!? That's the Jamie Moyer with the extreme flyball ratio, who gets lit up when he's not pitching in good pitching environments, so in other words, Moyer at the Cell would be a nightmare. And Redman didn't pitch that bad this season? I don't constitute a 5.71 ERA with a 76/63 K/BB ratio as being "that bad". In fact it's pretty brutal. -
And I was just about to post that Romo got game. Still better than Frankenstein though.

Good to see Frankenstein doing well.

Maybe Billy should just name himself manager.

QUOTE(Rowand44 @ Oct 23, 2006 -> 05:03 PM) So I got my first ever speeding ticket today coming back to school down 57. What's the damage done, and the speed you were doing?

I'm no expert (hence you probably shouldn't listen), but maybe call her and ask her out again, but this time go somewhere a bit nicer and see where things go from there.

There was an article this morning in one of the Washington papers saying that Cora was now out of the race for the Nats job. Don't think he was ever considered one of the favorites anyway. But now putting him in as the bench coach would be an interesting proposition. Wonder how people on here feel about that (and I feel sorry for the poor guy who has to come in an replace him as the 3rd base coach, if indeed it is going to happen).

So we all agree that Ware >>> Merriman now?

QUOTE(Soxy @ Oct 23, 2006 -> 04:50 AM) I thought you guys called it "candy floss" or is that only in the UK? We actually call it Fairy Floss down here (you were close), but in order to not create confusion, I just called it Cotton Candy. Have to say it really doesn't look too appealing though.

Get a room you 2.

I went to the Australian equivalent of Home Depot today. They were giving away free Cotton Candy, and I instantly thought of you Steve.

QUOTE(beck72 @ Oct 22, 2006 -> 12:14 AM) Or another decent position player prospect, like OF Carlos Gomez, a 20 yr old in AA who hit like .280/.350/.438 with 40 SB's who skipped high A. http://www.thebaseballcube.com/players/G/C...s-Gomez-2.shtml Gomez and Humber for Garcia I would probably do. Mets fans rate Gomez pretty highly because he's pretty toolsy IIRC.
-
QUOTE(beck72 @ Oct 21, 2006 -> 11:27 PM) I'd center on Humber in a Garcia trade. Maybe a SS prospect as well with Reyes a fixture there Carillo had some elbow issues this yr. Not sure how bad it is or what the prognosis is. With a trade of Fields, the sox should expect a sure thing rather than an injury risk. Emmanuel Garcia could be that guy possibly, but he hasn't hit well above rookie ball (albeit he's just turned 20). He was #6 on John Sickels Mets Top 20 prospects list before this season.

QUOTE(TLAK @ Oct 21, 2006 -> 10:35 PM) More like 9 freaking years of this. Up and down, good games and disasters. How can a guy with his arm and stuff be 100-105 life time? Because he is a dog. He managed to be a sub .500 pitcher for a team that won 90 games. You can explain away one season, but he has been mediocre for 9 years, how can you expect him to magically morph into a different guy? He's a loser. Maybe because he has trouble getting run support? For example in the 3 seasons Vazquez had sub 4 ERA's for the Expos he only won 39 games in those 3 seasons. After what he showed in the 2nd half of the season, the Sox aren't going to trade him you'd have to think. -
Here are Carillo's AA numbers from 9 GS this season FWIW; 1-3, 3.02 ERA, 43 K's, 15 BB's, 5HR. He'd easily have the best stuff of any White Sox prospect if he came into our system. Also the Freddy Garcia to the Mets rumors are starting to heat up a little again. Writers for various newspapers are tossing around the Heilman and Milledge for Willis, Peavy etc. talk again. My question is, Humber and Milledge is probably too much to expect, would you do Milledge + fringe prospect for Garcia, if you couldn't get a better offer for Freddy elsewhere?

QUOTE(VAfan @ Oct 21, 2006 -> 02:04 AM) All the talk about Ichiro is misguided IMO. First, Seattle is not trading him. He puts fans in the seats. Seattle is owned by a Japanese businessman. It's not happening, period. Second, why spend $12.5 million a year on Ichiro AND trade away valuable prospects to make it happen?? If the Sox want a prominent lead-off hitter who can play LF, then bid for Alfonso Soriano. He may end up costing even more than $12.5 million/year, but he won't cost any prospects, and he'll hit 40 more HRs. To take on either Ichiro's or Soriano's contract will probably require us to move one of our big-5 starters, but why not get something else in return for such a trade? I wouldn't say it's a given Soriano hits 40HR's for whoever he plays for next season. He screams out Adrian Beltre v2.0 all over again IMHO, so I'd be wary for whoever gets him that they don't put unrealistic expectations on him.
-
Ok how China is only on that list once I do not know. Actually it's quite frightening for those other 9 places really.
-
My thoughts on Fields are pretty well known, I'd like to see him dealt right now while his value is so high. I look at a team like the Padres as a perfect trading partner. You could get a Cesar Carillo and Scott Cassidy type of deal quite easily I would have thought, and maybe even more. There are a lot of teams out there like the Padres, Phillies (Scott Mathieson, Michael Bourne), the Giants, Mariners (if they dealt Beltre to the Pads), that if the Sox made Fields available, they'd get a pretty nice offer for him. Over the long - term I really have doubts over Fields plate discipline and his defense. I don't really want a guy who could have around 130-150K's in the lineup unless he's really going to produce very well in his other numbers like a guy like Jim Thome does with his OBP and BA etc.

QUOTE(Tony82087 @ Oct 21, 2006 -> 01:12 PM) Well, that was the worst loss I have seen from the Hawks in a long, long time. Give up 3 goals in 5 min, and lose Havlat... Yeah for 55 minutes it was looking rosy and then the last 5 mins weren't good at all. At least they said the X-Rays in Havlat came up negative.

I see Hammer wasn't going to miss out on Deron Williams this time.
