  1. QUOTE(Stocking @ Dec 14, 2005 -> 08:34 PM) But if KW is turning around and trading for an OF, include BA rather than Young Yeah that's the thought I had in mind, if we were going to try and trade for an Abreu, otherwise if it's a Tejada, then they'd prob keep BA. And from that Trib article from the Roto snippet that I just posted; Seriously if Chris Young played CF for the Sox in 2006, would his numbers be all that different from BA's (besides the extra K's)? You saw the jump Jeff Francouer made from AA from the Braves, and Young had better AA numbers than him.
  2. QUOTE(Flash Tizzle @ Dec 14, 2005 -> 08:41 PM) I'd love Abreu, but let's just speculate what it would take: Garland + McCarthy? Garland + Cotts? Garland + Anderson + prospect? Does anyone believe it would cost anything less then the scenarios listed above? We're in no position to deal for Abreu. Our system has been drastically weakened this offseason. There aren't many trading chips left which allow us to forsake their services and yet still have SOME hope for the future. We're running thin on pitching and outfielders. Well Houston was looking at possibly trading for Abreu, and the only player that I heard besides prospects was Brandon Backe. I think if we offered up Jon, and maybe a prospect like Sean Tracey, Pat Gillick could actually take that. Remember pitching is now a HUGE issue for the Phillies, after what's happened with the starters at Citizens. And they want good YOUNG pitching. Jon's not a rookie, but if the Phillies could get him locked up, they'd jump at it. And I know Abreu's a hell of a player, but they have Jason Michaels who can fill in. And maybe if we dealt Jon, we'd have to have a situation like Tim Hudson from a year ago where the other team has 48 hours to negotiate a long - term deal with him.
  3. QUOTE(Flash Tizzle @ Dec 14, 2005 -> 08:35 PM) Yes, and HELL no. We'd be in the same position as now--without two bullpen arms (unless you count McCarthy, which I dont), but in addition we'd have no CF. I find that interesting though. By all reports Anderson is probably going to put up numbers from what we've seen of Jackass Jones for the past few seasons. But Young has that chance to be special, a Mike Cameron type, but better in the batters box. Would Jerry Owens be ready to play in CF splitting time with Mackowiak? If so, then the Sox could have kept Young, traded Anderson, and set Chris loose in CF from 2007 onwards, assuming he performs in Charlotte.
  4. QUOTE(Dam8610 @ Dec 14, 2005 -> 07:57 PM) Anyone else think an Abreu deal is forthcoming? I don't know why, I just have a feeling it might happen. The Sox are pretty much the only team that has what they want. That's actually starting to make quite a bit of sense. I guess it depends on whether the Phillies can sign a set-up man like Brandon Looper. If they do, Ryan Madson moves into the rotation and they don't need a starter. If they can't, then suddenly the trade market is a big option for them.
  5. BTW I'm just gonna pose another question. If Brian Anderson was included in this trade instead of Chris Young, would Arizona still accept this deal, and would you?
  6. QUOTE(Wanne @ Dec 14, 2005 -> 08:07 PM) Loaded?!? Besides Drew and Quentin I'm not really seein too much. There's some more besides those 2 though (although not signing Upton hurt); Conor Jackson Dustin Nippert Carlos Gonzales I think with the D-Backs farm system and now with Young, they've got a couple of guys in there who could quite easily be All-Stars some-day, and you can't say that about a lot of farm systems.
  7. QUOTE(Flash Tizzle @ Dec 14, 2005 -> 06:40 PM) Someone has to be willing to give up talent in exchange for pitching. Teams that come to mind, Baltimore, Seattle, Texas, the Dodgers and the Reds.
  8. QUOTE(hitlesswonder @ Dec 14, 2005 -> 06:35 PM) An ERA of 4.5 in the NL just is not good. Especially for 12M a year. You've got to remember, Chase Field is one of the best hitter's parks in all of baseball right now. And with the D-Backs pitching wise, no-one other than Brandon Webb really had much success there at all last season. They did bring in a new pitching coach this off - season, and we've seen what Coop has done to the likes of Contreras, I'd like to see if he can continue to work his magic with Vazquez. If Javier can get those HR's given up below 30, in my mind he'll probably have a sub 4 ERA, throw over 200 innings as usual, and record about 200 K's, which is about 50-70 more than Garland.
  9. QUOTE(SSH2005 @ Dec 14, 2005 -> 06:28 PM) I still hope the Diamondbacks are sending us the Yankees $3 million per season for Vazquez's contract. That would make Vazquez's contract a little easier to stomach. That CBS article made me a little worried on that, but hopefully that's what happens, especially since we're giving up Chris Young here. But now I'm going to propose something here with Jon Garland. Miguel Tejada. That's right, you can start calling me crazy right now. But if right now we offered, Jon Garland and Joe Crede or Juan Uribe plus a prospect (would have to be top 5) for Tejada, don't you think that's the best offer the O's would have received so far? And it's actually do-able payroll wise. Garland will make 7-8M in 2006 if he goes thru arbitration. Crede prob 3-4M, and Uribe makes about that, so we only take an extra 1 or 2M. I extremely doubt something like this will occur, but if you're looking at possible trade scenarios for Jon Garland, with the current market, and what teams have, Miggy Tejada looks like a pretty damn good fit. Now do I like the trade? Well it's going to depend on a number of factors. How good of a player Chris Young turns into (I'm guessing he could eventually be a monster at Chase Field), the reliever we're giving up (I think Baj or Munoz possibly), what we get for Jon Garland, and how Vazquez does for us over the next 3 seasons compared to Jon Garland for what they're making etc.
  10. QUOTE(Jordan4life_2005 @ Dec 14, 2005 -> 04:22 PM) I'm not worried about the depth at wr. We've got Moose, Gage, Berrian and Currie. I'm sorry but that just made me laugh, really.
  11. QUOTE(YASNY @ Dec 13, 2005 -> 11:29 PM) Very interesting. What this tells me, in all likelyhood, is the KW feels he has little or no chance of getting Garland to sign a multiyear deal, within what KW feels is a reasonable amount of $$$. So, he's trying to trade Garland for a quality pitcher with some cost certainty. Good thinking on KW's part. KW obviously thinks Coop can work some magic with Vazquez and hopefully get him back to his Expos form. He was wildly inconsistent in 2005, hopefully if he does come here, the factors will be here for a rebound, such as the Latino clubhouse atmosphere and having Ozzie and Freddy there to help. Kind of like El Duque with Contreras to a lesser extent.
  12. These were Vazquez's splits for 2005 for each month; April - 6.11 ERA May - 2.15 ERA June - 6.75 ERA July - 3.71 ERA August - 7.09 ERA September - 2.93 ERA October - 1.13 ERA Looking at the HR's he gave up, he only gave up 6 in the first 2 months, and then 28 from June to September. Put simply, for his good months, he didn't have a .BAA higher than .236. In his bad months, it wasn't lower than .316. He did pitch once at the Cell though in 2005, and that game is actually pretty easy to remember, he was getting that really wide strike zone all night long, but he had 10 K's that night and gave up 3ER in 8IP. Unfrotunately, he's got Freddy Garcia syndrome. Terrible at the start of games, 4.94 ERA from 0-15, 9.84 ERA from 16-30. When he was dominant in Montreal, he gave up about 10 less HR's than he did in 2005. But he's an innings eater, he's thrown over 200 innings in 4 of the last 5 seasons (and the only time he missed he threw 198 for the Yanks).
  13. I SOOOOO called this about a month back (and don't worry I'm going to bump that thread), if it's indeed Jon Garland that we are trading. Obviously, the Sox have seen what has happened with Jon's contract negotiations etc. and the market for starting pitching. Arizona needs groundball pitchers in their ballpark. Garland had a 1.50 G/F ratio in 2005. Vazquez will be under our control after next season, which will be important when El Duque's deal finishes up, because if we kept Jon and he bolts after 2006, we only have 4 starters. Vazquez's more of a flyball pitcher 1.28 G/F ratio, so he may give up some more HR's than Jon at the Cell (he gave up 35 in total in 2005). But he's more of a strikeout pitcher as well. EDIT: Oh and can we trade Brian Anderson for Carlos Quentin (or Chad Tracy) while we're at it?
  14. QUOTE(greasywheels121 @ Dec 13, 2005 -> 01:54 PM) The Texans have hired former Atlanta head coach Dan Reeves as a consultant for 6 weeks. http://sports.espn.go.com/nfl/columns/stor..._len&id=2256872 Speaking of the Texans, this Bang Cartoon is a good one; http://www.bangcartoon.com/firstpick.htm
  15. QUOTE(Jordan4life_2005 @ Dec 13, 2005 -> 01:31 PM) Nene is a lot more than just potential. He's a legitimate center who's been stuck behind guys like Marcus Camby and Kenyon Martin. The guy has got a lot of skills. I'd love to have him. You could move Chandler back to the 4 where he's much better. Then you could move Sweetney to the bench where he can really put up some numbers against other team's reserves. But why would you trade for him now when he's out for the season with a bad knee and he'll be a FA at the end of this season anyways? I'm assuming you didn't know that bout Nene.
  16. Have a great one Mike!!!!!!
  17. QUOTE(Chisoxfn @ Dec 12, 2005 -> 11:39 AM) They aren't a good team We'll see Jason, we'll see.
  18. QUOTE(SoxFan101 @ Dec 12, 2005 -> 06:45 PM) Maybe you should worry about making the playoffs at all b4 you start to worry about who your playing Yeah it's getting pretty tight up there, but today's win was huge and most importantly, our O-Line was a lot better. But a couple of teams are going to miss out, but at least the NFC has actually been a lot more comptetitive this season.
  19. Seattle should probably go for him over Everett, but as for the reasons outlined above, mainly the sub-par OPS, no I don't want him.
  20. QUOTE(White Sox Josh @ Dec 12, 2005 -> 09:58 AM) Orton had a good game. The Offensive line was awful and the Receivers didn't help either. He went out and threw for 207 yards and no interceptions. Was he perfect? No, but this should've been good enough to win. The Defense crapped their pants today. So 9 points is good enough to win a lot of football games now? Tell me on how many teams in the NFL would 9 points be enough to win consistently in the NFL. So now one week he throws for 69 yards, and now 207. But did it make a difference? No, in fact they scored more when he threw for 69 yards. In the playoffs, are you going to win by scoring in single digits? No, you're not. And that's why the Bears need to make this switch, but after today, it probably won't happen, and as a Cowboys fan, I do hope we play you guys in the playoffs with Orton behind center.
  21. QUOTE(Chisoxfn @ Dec 11, 2005 -> 06:11 PM) From whats been hinted, it sounds as if Fields is going to start the season in AAA, which means Schnur will be at 3rd in AA. Yeah Dave Wilder in a recent article said that they thought Fields had done enough to start 2006 in Charlotte.Fields should at least hit around what he hit in B-Ham, he just really needs to work on that plate discipline. As for Schnurstein, if he can improve defensively, I think he'll suprise some people, but I know Jason and I rate him a little higher than others (but we have our favorite prospects now don't we).
  22. QUOTE(3 BeWareTheNewSox 5 @ Dec 11, 2005 -> 10:08 PM) They've been scouting Ben though, they want him, especially after that story the NY media made up that Gordon and Skiles were fueding Can you see the Pacers wanting Gordon though when they already have Jamaal Tinsley, the Lithunian Dude, Fred Jones and Stephen Jackson? Plus the Pacers are a very good defensive team, and we all know defense isn't Ben Gordon's strong point. Can you show me where it says they've been scouting Gordon FWIW? I can't really see a fit, but hey stranger things have happened.
