QUOTE(knightni @ Dec 22, 2005 -> 09:18 PM) I mean, who's next though? Mike Piazza? Piazza - .251/.326/.452 Buck - .242/.287/.389 I do see your point though, but it's also just that some of their youngsters aren't performing, and right now you don't know if they can get to the level of their potential.

QUOTE(knightni @ Dec 22, 2005 -> 09:13 PM) Royals are finally spending $$. Too bad it's on players that were good in 1996 instead of 2006. But still at least those players will be better than what they threw out in 2005. Allan Baird's gotta do what he can to save his job I suppose.

The Dodgers and Angels have been the 2 teams most mentioned on here with trade talks for Jon Garland. But I think the Orioles would also be an interesting option, depending on who'd they be willing to give up. Take for example an offer like this, we trade Jon Garland for Eric Bedard, Chris Ray and another prosepct. Bedard only made $330,000 in 2005 and I believe he's eligible for arbitration for the 1st time, so he'd be under our control for 3 seasons. He's a bit injury prone for a starter, but he showed in April and May what he's capable of at his best. Daniel Cabrera could be another option, but I think they want to keep him and see how he does under Leo Mazzone. Chris Ray on the other hand had a 2.66 ERA in 41 games for the O's this season. He's only 23, and could be an excellent set-up man for us in the years to come. Of course Angelos does have a reputation for not trading for guys unless they can be signed long - term, but they're still an interesting option.
-
The Angels sure have a logjam in their infield right now don't they. I'm guessing another trade could be on the way, perhaps with the Red Sox with Erstad and Cabrera possibly being invovled. Will be interesting to see whether Finley can get back to his 2004 form in the NL. I know back then there were quite a few people here interested in him as that LH power hitter we needed in the middle of the lineup. Good to say, that need has been filled now.

QUOTE(redandwhite @ Dec 22, 2005 -> 04:54 PM) the red sox are heading down because they didn't throw out 13 million dollars per to johnny damon? i disagree, my friend. So who replaces Damon? And who do you have to trade to do so?

QUOTE(White Sox Josh @ Dec 22, 2005 -> 03:51 PM) never said he would but you never know. Chances are he makes it anyways. Ozzie loves the matchups. Would you of said Neal Cotts is going to be one of the best setup men in baseball before 2005? No you wouldn't. Remember Neal Cotts in 2004? That would be what Arnie Munoz would be like in 2006 most likely if he was in our bullpen. And don't forget, Cotts in the 1st month and a half, 3/4'ers of Soxtalk (you know who you are) wanted him gone. SAYONARA. But you know what happened. He made a simple adjustment, and the rest is history. But those 1/4 of the Soxtalk population who knew Cotts had that potential, stuck by him. Don't forget Munoz was a starter down at Charlotte in 2005, and did NOT have good numbers down there at all.

QUOTE(TLAK @ Dec 22, 2005 -> 04:33 AM) The New York Yankees. While we're at it, name me the last team that changed over 1/3 of the team and DID repeat. Cos you know those teams like the Boston Red Sox in 2004 and the Florida Marlins in 2003 did a fine job in standing pat in the next season didn't they. And the Yankees have a $200M payroll. Of course they can choose to stand pat.

QUOTE(timotime @ Dec 22, 2005 -> 04:26 PM) typical of you haters to be jealous of timo. you wish you could hit bloop singles in the clutch like timo does. keep hatin', haters. So Timo was worth $1M just for the bloop singles? How many of em were in his 29 singles in 2005? How many bloop singles were there in his .220 BA/RISP? Timo's Gross Production Average in 2005 was a whopping .190. To put it simply, .200 is lousy. Anything below that, is just plain out terrible.

QUOTE(Chisoxfn @ Dec 22, 2005 -> 06:05 AM) Roy Williams f***ing sucks. Most overhyped and over-rated player in the league. The guy can't cover s***. He can hit and boy can he hit, but he's not a great safety. Just ask Dbaho (well if he'll ignore his homerisms). He gets reamed in coverage all the time. Small example was the pathetic job he did in the Washington game earlier in the year where he got burned on consecutive bombs for TD's on plays that were his responsibility. Haha I read this at work today, made me laugh a little I gotta say. I'll say this about Roy Williams. I actually wish we would move him to OLB. It's kind of a weak spot for us at the moment, and it puts him closer to the line of scrimmage, where he can make more plays. Look I think Roy Williams is the best run stopping strong safety in the league, and I know a lot of people aren't going to agree with that. But no, he's not good in coverage. Jeremy Shockey beat him twice in the 4th quarter when we played the Giants earlier in the season. I don't think we have really done a great job at protecting this weakness though. For our secondary, we still play a bit of cover two, and putting Williams deep, just isn't a good idea. Look at Rodney Harrison, you wouldn't call him a good cover safety. But on the Patriots, they did an excellent job at hiding this weakness, and putting him into the position to make plays. And a lot of that has to do with the different defensive schemes they run. I think also with the Cowboys, FS is definitely going to be an area where we'll have to upgrade. We really do need a good covering FS in there besides Williams. Keith Davis is ok, but he's not that good. It's something we need to address. Of course we could just move Williams to OLB, and have him next to Bradie James (unlucky not to make the pro bowl in my mind), Kevin Burnett and DeMarcus Ware. -
So if they signed him as a starter, the Jason Marquis trade could be back on, or they could use him as a set-up man. I'm guessing by the contract there, it's the latter. EDIT: And now Rotoworld thinks it's the former. We'll have to wait and see.

QUOTE(SSH2005 @ Dec 21, 2005 -> 08:28 PM) I wish we could trade Chandler and his $60 million contract for someone who isn't a complete wussy loser. Is that the Erick Dampier / Shawn Bradley syndrome?

QUOTE(SoxFan101 @ Dec 21, 2005 -> 06:34 PM) Why would we make a trade and lose some of our young talent and future of the franchise on a season we aint going anywhere anyways. In the offseason we will have plenty of money to sign anyone we want probably 2 impact players right now im hoping Al Harrington and Nazr Mohammed. Add that with what looks like a top 3 pick from the knicks and a middle of the road pick for us we should have some serious talent going into the 06 season. I still think the Bulls could do some damage if they actually had a decent center in there, Hinrich and Duhon seem to have lifted their games this season, and from what we've seen Tyson is just much more suited to coming off the bench. Al Harrington will definitely be in demand this off-season that's for sure. Still, it'd be interesting to see if he would play SF when you already have two SF's in Luol Deng and Nocioni, unless you trade one, or whether he would start at PF which is what he is doing now. Mohammed would be interesting, but the Bulls could choose to go after Nene instead. And yes the draft will be very good for you guys (don't you think Isiah wishes he put some top 3 protection on that pick now ). LaMarcus Aldrige or Andrea Bargnani are the 2 best bigs in the draft, and are slated to go top 5 right now.

QUOTE(knightni @ Dec 21, 2005 -> 08:17 PM) Teh Mariners fail @ baseball. It's Bill Bavasi's fault. That guy's probably one of the worst, if not the worst GM in baseball right now, and that's saying something. Still, if he sticks to his guns in trading Reed, after what happened with the Red Sox today, he should end up with more than Brandon Arroyo, but this is Bavasi we're talking about.

QUOTE(JimH @ Dec 21, 2005 -> 01:05 PM) Looks like Jeff Davanon is about to sign with the Dbacks. They lost out on Lofton and turned their attention to Davanon. For the money it looked like they were going to sign him for (although apparently his agent denied that), doesn't look like a good move for the D-Backs. Frankly and I know they need a CF, but wouldn't you rather have Green in CF and Quentin in RF, or have an open competition at spring training b/w Chris Young and Carlos Quentin for that 1 OF spot? Of course they could still try to trade Troy Glaus and get a CF back, so they can move Chad Tracy to 3rd.

QUOTE(AddisonStSox @ Dec 21, 2005 -> 09:53 AM) Regardless, I'm done with the Japanese smoke-and-mirrors pitching experiment. Once these guys are seen by the majority of the league, they're toast in the MLB. So you wouldn't try to sign Daisuke Matsuzuka if you could?
-
I wonder if there's any bad blood b/w Bradford and us, from when we traded him. Hopefully that isn't the case, but I think a team more desperate for bullpen help (e.g Cincinatti) will offer him a better deal.
-
San Diego's bullpen is really not going to be that good in 2006. They've lost this production; Chris Hammond; 5-1, 3.84 ERA Akinori Otsuka; 2-8, 3.59 ERA Rudy Seanez; 7-1, 2.69 ERA To replace them, so far they've only signed Doug Brocail who had a 5.52 ERA for Texas. They'll really need Scott Linebrink to have another really damn good season (8-1, 1.83 ERA), otherwise it could be worse. I do like the Gonzalez acquisition for them though. He should fit well in that park, as he's not a major power hitter, but he'll hit for a very good average with about 15-20 HR's. That's of course if they decide to keep him, or trade him for David Wells. Getting Chris Young for Adam Eaton was another good move in this current market for starting pitching. But Texas fills another bullpen need, and they may decide to try and lock up Eaton on a 3 to 4 year deal possibly. So it's a pretty even trade IMHO.
-
And yet at the beginning of the off-season, it looked like he was going to be the Padres opening day catcher for 2006. I mean yeah he had a really bad winter league performance, but I gotta say I'm suprised with this. Rotoworld is saying it came down to Olivo wanting a little more money then David Ross. I know who'd I want at catcher b/w the two.

QUOTE(fathom @ Dec 21, 2005 -> 04:34 PM) How about the part of the article that says the White Sox are currently over budget? What are we currently at, for the moment? I know it's probably going to end up somewhere b/w the $85-90M mark.
-
Willie Harris will easily get a bench job somewhere around the league. For example, here are the OBP's of the bottom 5 qualified 2Bmen in 2005. Cano - .320 Cantu - .311 Soriano - .309 Reyes - .300 Perez - .298 Mark Grudzielanek gets $4M from the Royals in 2006. Sure he hit .294 this past season, but he only had an OBP of .334. Willie had an OBP of .343 in 2004 and .333 in 2005. Just saying that compared to other teams who had to put up with the likes of Luis Rivas for a few seasons, Willie would actually be more valuable to another team, even though we all know he's got (here's a Soxtalk favorite) "the NOODLE arm". Timo, well we were all hoping for this move for really the last 2 seasons. Let's hope Borch can hit at least .200, with a bit more power and hopefully be a good pinch hitter with a good BA/RISP. Felix Diaz, well the Sox handled him terribly, and a team looking for a 5th starter e.g the Dodgers may take a little look at him. He'll definitely get at least a MLC from someone though.

Did they even bother trying to double team him? That's insane what he did though.
