A FIVE-year-old Northern Territory girl has been smoking cannabis, it was learned last night. A nine-year-old and a 13-year-old also smoke drugs and drink alcohol. The case is being investigated by Family and Children's Services. The department last night refused to confirm an inquiry was under way. But a former FACS officer said: "The child's case has been referred to an assessment team to follow up. "There have been no reports of physical violence towards the child - just drug abuse." The Northern Territory News has obtained photographs that show the five-year-old girl preparing to light a bong in a house in Palmerston. A 13-year-old is pictured lighting a bong while her 13-year-old friend pours herself a glass of sherry. The neighbour, who admits to being a drug user, said the five-year-old girl helped herself to the bong. "She lit it and correctly breathed the smoke in without any adult help," the woman said. The girl also smokes cigarettes. "This is serious stuff - she acts like an addict," the neighbour said. "If she doesn't get that ganja or tobacco then she chucks a tantrum - she throws herself on the ground and screams until she can get her hit. "I've worked with addicts my whole life but I've never seen a five-year-old addict. "I've seen teenagers and adult addicts and their stages of aggression - the behaviour that this child is displaying is exactly like that. "We're not talking about a one-off, it's not an accident. "If FACS tested that child tomorrow she'd have THC in her blood." Health Department spokeswoman Bernadette Keefe said last night: "If there is evidence of a five-year-old involved in drug use we would be immediately concerned and take action. "But that is not the information we have received." But when asked what information the department had received, Ms Keefe said: "I can't comment on that."

RESIDENTS of the outback town of Winton saw a flash 'like 50,000 spotlights' as a huge fireball crashed to earth somewhere in central Queensland late yesterday. Authorities are trying to track down the source of a large fireball seen in the sky over the state's north and central west. Speculation has ranged from space junk to a meteorite. "We only know it wasn't an aircraft," a spokesman for the Australian Search and Rescue Organisation said. But in Winton Elsa Nelms and her partner Graeme East had front row seats for the spectacular light show, sitting on their verandah at dusk talking business with a friend. "Suddenly there was this flash, it's the only way I can describe it – it was so bright it was a white flash and it lit everything up," Ms Nelms said. "It was like somebody had turned on 50,000 spotlights." "We all looked up in the sky and there was a white smoke trail coming from the north-east – like a firecracker smoke trail but it was too high to even be an aircraft." Ms Nelms said she had gone into her backyard to lock her dog in a pen when the house shook. "While I was putting him away there was a rumble like thunder a long way away. "I missed the action up in the house but my partner said the eaves shook and the roof rattled." She said the whole of Winton either saw or felt the event, with phones ringing all over town and people coming out of their houses to see what was going on. "The neighbours came over and they were white-faced," she said. Ms Nelms said she later spoke by phone to friends living 130km outside Winton who had seen the flash but not felt the rumble. "There's probably is a big hole somewhere – but had this fallen on Winton we probably wouldn't be sitting here talking about it," Ms Nelms said.

Most Iraqi's are glad that there is no more Saddam, but there is the still the minority that will always be his loyal supporters, and the U.S, British and Aussie troops jobs over there won't be finished, until Iraq can prove it can survive by itself.

Exactly they needed another big run stuffer to replace Big Ted.

Brian Anderson is a pure CF, eventually he'll become an asset in the outfield with his great arm and he's got pretty good speed and range as well I think.
-
There was a rumor in yesterday's Boston Herald about Maggs goin to Boston while Trot Nixon is out injured. The only otha team I could think would be interested in him would be the Dodgers.

From da Cubune, SCOTTSDALE, Ariz. -- Early in spring training, White Sox pitching coach Don Cooper said the contenders for the final spots on the pitching staff would reveal themselves and let Ozzie Guillen and his staff know who should go north. With four games left before the Sox head to Kansas City to open the season, they are down to three candidates for the final spot or two in the bullpen. None of the three has separated himself from the others, which isn't necessarily a bad thing. "They haven't separated themselves because they've all done well," Cooper said of Neal Cotts, Jon Adkins and Mike Jackson. Cotts and Jackson worked Monday, and Adkins pitched a perfect inning Tuesday against the San Francisco Giants. "Each guy brings some different ingredients to the table," Cooper said. Guillen has raved about Adkins, who has allowed one run in 102/3 spring innings. Cooper said Adkins has improved over last season primarily by slowing everything down. "He came in this spring and looked really settled in," Cooper said. "Each outing here he has looked better in his rhythm and his tempo." The way the bullpen is set up now, the Sox have several pitchers whom they would prefer to use for only one inning: Shingo Takatsu, Cliff Politte, Damaso Marte and Billy Koch. Specialty left-hander Kelly Wunsch may face just one or two hitters. That's not a problem as long as the starters are going deep into games. "If we don't get the bulk of the work from the starters, we're going to need innings to fill to keep us in the ballgame," Cooper said. "That's where Jon can help us, along with possibly a Neal Cotts." Adkins and Cotts have been starters in the minors, so they can provide the multiple innings the long-relief role requires. "Any role they want to use me in, I'm willing to do," Adkins said. "I always have an open mind on things. I just want to see this ballclub win and hopefully I can help out in some way." Of the three, Adkins may find himself the odd man out for two reasons: He's not left-handed like Cotts and he's not a 16-year veteran like Jackson. "Jackson fits in a lot of different ways," Cooper said. Jackson's spring numbers haven't been overly impressive — 5.14 ERA and nine hits allowed in seven innings — but he brings a veteran's stature and savvy to the staff. "He can do an awful lot of things off the field," Cooper said. "The other day we had a pitchers meeting and he got up and said a few things. Myself and some other people were impressed with the way he carries himself." At some point soon the Sox are going to have to make two decisions: whether to carry 11 or 12 pitchers and who among the trio of Cotts, Adkins and Jackson survives. "It's going to be a tough decision but I don't think we can go wrong because they all bring some good stuff," Cooper said. "Who knows how it's going to shake out? There might be a surprise or two." Bits: Mark Buehrle picked up the victory in his final outing of the spring, pitching 61/3 innings of a 10-3 Sox victory. Buehrle gave up three runs, five hits and two home runs, including a long blast by Barry Bonds. He also issued his only walk of the spring. Buehrle finished with a 3-1 record and a 2.77 ERA in 261/3 innings. … Magglio Ordonez, who was 4-for-4 Monday, had three hits in his first three at-bats Tuesday before grounding into a double play. … Willie Harris had three more hits Tuesday to bump his average up to .339. … Shingo Takatsu retired both batters he faced, giving him three-straight scoreless appearances. … The Sox entered play Tuesday leading the American League with a .306 batting average and collected 17 hits against the Giants.

I don't think Steinbrenner will settle for Lofton playin CF next year. Although I hope Beltran ends up on a team that really needs him like the Dodgers for the sake of baseball.
-
Don't worry he'll be wearin Pin Stripes in 2005 as their new CF. Don't think Ol Steiny will settle for Bernie Williams on his last legs.

There's been ads and previews out bout it, of course anythin with Johnny Depp is bound to be pretty good.

He's nothin but a 4th WR at best for da Skins though. Waste of a pick if u ask me, and Washington needs all that they can get.

Unless their play warrants it, Anderson and Sweeney will be in the minors for a while yet. The last thing we want is another Willy Mo Pena situation, where we hav one of our young stud outfielders rottin on da bench.
