  1. I don't even need to browse Oakland related threads anymore on Soxtalk. I hear any rumor relating to an Oakland player under trade consideration, and I assume Beane will swindle the opposition. He's so gosh darn smart. No playoff series victories will lend you that consideration.
  2. QUOTE(Chisoxfn @ Dec 5, 2005 -> 07:56 PM) Someone pinch me, I'd deal Fields and a guy like Tracey for Crawford in a heartbeat. That's fine, but they're not asking for Tracey. McCarthy is their request. I doubt that "or" exists in trade negotiations. Too bad we don't live on the East Coast, where Fields could be boasted as the next great 3B of our generation. Only needless hype would convince teams to include him as a major part of any trade.
  3. I read in Trade Winds you didn't find this topic worthy of creating a thread. Admit it-- you believe a trade may go down, and changing McCarthy's number on the site is somehow an indication of this.
  4. I understand the frustration of Cubs fans. Remember, two season ago Sox fans were under similiar conditions--opposing team in Chicago had experienced playoff success, and followed up their success by acquiring several high profile players. Whereas our management did little in the free agent market to address pressing needs. Now, in 2005, just multiply Cub anguish four fold. Winning a World Series is bound to aggrivate their fan base further. It's difficult sitting by watching your quasi-modo looking general manager overpaying for setup men, while seemingly ignoring a vital position such as shortstop. He may still pull of his annual raping of Pittsburgh, but unless he does something which upgrades three positions (CF/RF/SS), things won't be cheerful in Wrigleyville. Oh, and don't forget The Dude is still employed. He's already been labeled scapegoat for failing to establish fundementals the last several seasons.
  5. Don't forget the title song of perhaps The Who's most underappreciated album, Quadrophenia: LOOOOVVVVEEEEE!! Reign O'er Meeee!
  6. I was waiting for the CTA bus outside school today with some kid whom, for whatever reason, decided to wear khaki shorts. I don't know--perhaps he didn't notice the snow, or the bitter cold once he exited his residence, but it was ridiculous. What's funny is the bus took nearly 15 minutes to arrive where we were. I laughed, all snuggled up in a thermal jacket and thick black stocking hat.
  7. QUOTE(Balta1701 @ Dec 2, 2005 -> 12:58 PM) I don't even know if it'd take that...they'd just need a good season from Morneau. If the Indians lose significant amounts of pitching and can't replace it, they could take a step back next year (They could also take another step forward if their offense becomes more consistent) Morneau's swing, unless changed, will never allow him to put together a good season. I've never seen a high fastball or inside slider he could hit.
  8. This is an example of forsaking players from a position of strength. Twins can afford to give up these arms. However, Florida should have asked for Rincon or Crain.
  9. So--is McCarthy slated for the bullpen? Or is Garland being shopped? Hopefully Guillen will change his tune after a talk with Williams. Why play this tired game of appointing favorites? Duque doesn't deserve placement in the rotation over McCarthy. Our goal is to win, not appease a veteran.
  10. QUOTE(qwerty @ Dec 1, 2005 -> 10:03 PM) I have about 1,000 other pictures to back up the claim that she is nasty... same with kirsten dunst... cheesus lice. I'm morbidly interested in these pictures. Post 'em. Or atleast cite the links.
  11. QUOTE(3E8 @ Dec 1, 2005 -> 07:39 PM) The problem is no one will give up much in terms of prospects for only one guaranteed year of Jon Garland. Nothing would surprise me. Perhaps the team trading for Garland, ideally Texas or Baltimore, can forsake a few prospects for a starting pitcher if they believe the move provides leverage for a contract extension.
  12. You all have to ask yourself this: WWBD? What WOULD Beane do in this situation? To properly place yourself within his mindset, just imagine you were yet again stomped out of the ALDS. Forget about advancing even one round. The playoffs are decided by hot streaks and luck--until statistics prove otherwise or Oakland wins. Then it's based on talent. Now, to the matter at hand. I'd be willing to predict Garland would be moved if Beane were at the helm. I'm certaintly not advocating that, but if a team is willing to assemble a package--one of which includes a stud pitching prospect projected for arrival within one, two years--do you approve it? Our team will become very expensive over the next few years, and unless our payroll increases accordingly, we'll have to rely on several cheap alternatives to defer larger contracts. This is where including both Haigwood and Gonzalez in the Thome deal hurts. Now, I realize pitching was our anchor in winning a World Series. I'd be more willing to adopt a Beane-philosophy if there was a pitching prospect in return who made it an absolute can't miss deal. Or if a prospect within our system was ready to accompany McCarthy in the rotation. Just a thought. Because Beane is a genius, and every organization within Major League Baseball should adopt his methods.
  13. --Cranberry Sauce --Pork-N-Beans --Olives --Corn Beef and Cabbage. Every St. Patricks Day I avoid the entire lower level of my house because the smell is nauseating. --Galumpki. Usually sits within my refrigerator for weeks before my dad (only person willing to eat it) finishes the entire meal.
  14. Not a big fan of David Lynch, but was surprised with Blue Velvet. Little strange, as are all movies involving Lynch. Anyone with Encore Mystery should tune in--it's shown about every week.
  15. QUOTE(Gene Honda Civic @ Nov 29, 2005 -> 11:00 PM) I bet he gets 2/$5M with a 3rd year option, small buyout The marketability alone is worth 5 million I've got to be the first person to realize Mike Myers shares the same name as horror icon Michael Myers, right? Or how both are similiar because they are murder on lefties? Seriously though, if Williams is considering Myers he needs to trade Marte immediately--and just as quickly pick up Mike. Teams aren't exactly wading out recent market trends. He'll be gone by next week if we're left waiting for Konerko to decide his destination.
  16. QUOTE(SnB @ Nov 25, 2005 -> 07:00 PM) how are miguel olivo and jeremy reed doing? Freddy garcia was a huge part of our WORLD SERIES team. Olivo and reed were both highly touted prospects as well and both have turned out to be big dissapointments. I'd do prospects for a guy like thome everytime. The past failures of traded prospects shouldn't be a compliment to Williams, but a detriment to our system. I'll admit now I was very upset Williams gave up Morse, Reed, and Olivo for Garica. But due to Garica's pitching in the playoffs, regardless of how those three finish their careers, it was worth it. In a few years, who knows? Perhaps Haigwood and Gonzalez are both fixtures in the Phillies rotation while we're inserting jobber 4th/5th starters from the waiver wire. I simply don't like how both prospects were included. The package Williams provided is one I'd expect from a HEALTHY Thome. Not one removed from a terrible, godawful, injury ridden season. Let's hope he's healthy this year.
  17. I agree, to an extent. Phillies were desperate to unload Thome. Why did we concede to Haigwood and Gio? Phillies should have eaten more of the contract for the package of Rowand/Haigwood/Gonzalez. Problem I have with this move is we've set ourselves back several years in the pitching department. Unless someone pulls a McCarthy and advances quickly, we're going to have problems in a few years when our starting pitchers command high salaries. Although if one, ideally two, of Young/Sweeney/Anderson/Owens steps up and contributes in the outfield it will help defer payments of large contracts.
  18. QUOTE(WHarris1 @ Nov 25, 2005 -> 06:04 PM) Rowand had his today. Can't wait to see Jim's. I watched several clips of Rowand's introduction today, and he did not appear happy. When his jersery was put on, he didn't even crack a smile. Rowand appeared shocked--perhaps the reality of the trade didn't fully hit him until that moment.
  19. QUOTE(KipWellsFan @ Nov 24, 2005 -> 01:29 AM) http://www.usmagazine.com/ more at link While their Newlywed show likely exaggerated Simpson's ignorance, I believe it must have been miserable for Nick to deal with her nonsense every day for several years. Her talentless sister and overbearing father probably didn't help matters. No where to go from here, Jessica. Playboy's next. You don't serve any other purpose in society.
  20. I believe it's obvious which trade will grab the Tribune's headlines tomorrow: CUBS BOLSTER BULLPEN WITH HOWRY Bottom of page: SOX IT THOME
  21. QUOTE(whitesoxfan13 @ Nov 23, 2005 -> 04:29 PM) Excellent trade, in my opinion. If we can resign PK our lineup is scary. IF is a huge word. Anaheim may be finalizing their offer to Konerko's agent right now. Then where would we be? Personally, I believe Williams doesn't make this trade unless he's absolutely certain signing Konerko is feasible. I wouldn't expect Konerko to promise Williams his loyalty, than in the event Anaheim adds a few more million, turn his back on Williams and accept LA's offer. Konerko probably realizes his options are short, and unless an organization presents a ridiculous contract, he'll stay where he feels comfortable.
  22. You wonder if Rowand would have won a gold-glove if one, perhaps both, of Haigwood or Gonzalez may have changed. Teams make irrational decisions based on hype (ie, gold gloves); it certaintly couldn't have hurt his value.
  23. QUOTE(Allsox @ Nov 23, 2005 -> 04:12 PM) Pods LF Pierre CF Dye RF Thome DH Konerko 1B Iguchi 2B Pierzynski C Crede 3B Uribe SS Against RHP, this lineup is deadly. Against LHP, I wouldn't expect Pierzynski or Thome to be of much assistance. Unfortunately, the American League Central is stockpiled with quality left-handed starting pitchers. If you expect Podsednik and Pierre to continue hitting LHP well, as they both did this season, then perhaps it won't much of a problem. It would be great if Anderson remained on the club, somehow, in the event a trade for Pierre was structured. He could always spell Pierre or Pods if either had trouble against a particular LH pitcher.
  24. For it's immediate impact, I approve this trade. Never really held much attachment to Rowand, so his departure doesn't hurt. Don't know why, but I was more upset emotionally when news broke of the White Sox trading Olivo. On Haigwood and Gonzalez's inclusion--Williams better be preparing himself to structure long term deals for Garland and Contreras (dependent on this season). Don't expect production from the minors in the pitching department for quite awhile.
  25. Not that their opinion matters, but Rotoworld is already chiming in and classifying this trade as "terrible." Almost as predictable is the upcoming Baseball America article which will further analyze this trade and criticize Williams.
