I don't even need to browse Oakland related threads anymore on Soxtalk. I hear any rumor relating to an Oakland player under trade consideration, and I assume Beane will swindle the opposition. He's so gosh darn smart. No playoff series victories will lend you that consideration.

I understand the frustration of Cubs fans. Remember, two season ago Sox fans were under similiar conditions--opposing team in Chicago had experienced playoff success, and followed up their success by acquiring several high profile players. Whereas our management did little in the free agent market to address pressing needs. Now, in 2005, just multiply Cub anguish four fold. Winning a World Series is bound to aggrivate their fan base further. It's difficult sitting by watching your quasi-modo looking general manager overpaying for setup men, while seemingly ignoring a vital position such as shortstop. He may still pull of his annual raping of Pittsburgh, but unless he does something which upgrades three positions (CF/RF/SS), things won't be cheerful in Wrigleyville. Oh, and don't forget The Dude is still employed. He's already been labeled scapegoat for failing to establish fundementals the last several seasons.

I was waiting for the CTA bus outside school today with some kid whom, for whatever reason, decided to wear khaki shorts. I don't know--perhaps he didn't notice the snow, or the bitter cold once he exited his residence, but it was ridiculous. What's funny is the bus took nearly 15 minutes to arrive where we were. I laughed, all snuggled up in a thermal jacket and thick black stocking hat.

Our team will become very expensive over the next few years, and unless our payroll increases accordingly, we'll have to rely on several cheap alternatives to defer larger contracts. This is where including both Haigwood and Gonzalez in the Thome deal hurts. Now, I realize pitching was our anchor in winning a World Series. I'd be more willing to adopt a Beane-philosophy if there was a pitching prospect in return who made it an absolute can't miss deal. Or if a prospect within our system was ready to accompany McCarthy in the rotation. Just a thought. Because Beane is a genius, and every organization within Major League Baseball should adopt his methods.

I agree, to an extent. Phillies were desperate to unload Thome. Why did we concede to Haigwood and Gio? Phillies should have eaten more of the contract for the package of Rowand/Haigwood/Gonzalez. Problem I have with this move is we've set ourselves back several years in the pitching department. Unless someone pulls a McCarthy and advances quickly, we're going to have problems in a few years when our starting pitchers command high salaries. Although if one, ideally two, of Young/Sweeney/Anderson/Owens steps up and contributes in the outfield it will help defer payments of large contracts.
