QUOTE (Marty34 @ Jul 14, 2013 -> 06:58 PM) I think to do a rebuild right the bullpen should always be the first to go because of how difficult it is to get consistent high-level performance out of relievers from one year to the next. More to the point on Reed though, I want a closer with better stuff than he when this team is ready to contend for a championship. I agree on the relievers being a year in year out thing. But with Reed he has a fastball between 93-96 with a plus slider and a plus change up. Honestly, I think you're being a little greedy. You.don't need overpowering stuff to be a closer, just one who can step up in the 9th. Reed has done that with 24-28 save attempts and 2 of those the defense failed him. Personally, Reed has been tremendous in save situations and will only get better.

QUOTE (Marty34 @ Jul 14, 2013 -> 06:07 PM) Very much so especially if the sale extends to guys like De Aza, Dunn, and Reed which I hope it does. I wouldn't mind Dunn and De Aza to a lesser extent because he still is having a pretty good year offensively. Reed hasn't even hit arbitration yet, and that's not how you do a rebuild. He is controlled for 4 or 5 more years unless you're absolutely blown away with a deal.

QUOTE (BigEdWalsh @ Jul 14, 2013 -> 05:13 PM) That's what I'm thinking too. It's very realistic that the Sox can finish worse than the Astros. Hard to be worse than the Marlins, but even that could happen. Marlins have 35 wins. Astros have 33 wins. White Sox have 37 wins. We can very well be in contention for that number 1 pick considering were about to be major sellers at the deadline. Marlins and Astros will essentially have the same teams.

When will Jacobs make his debut? Still not listed on the Barons' roster yet.

Wells is squaring the ball up all night just can't find a hole. Has had good ABs -

I believe it was a change up -
Rios might be the best outfielder and hitter out on the market. Alexei has been tearing it up as of late. De Aza is also killing the ball. Peavy coming back soon barring his rehab start. Anyone else think we can actually get a decent haul for De Aza and Alexei?

QUOTE (Balta1701 @ Jul 13, 2013 -> 06:35 PM) I really wonder if they're willing to go with a 4 lefty rotation for a full year. I might well do it, but I wonder if they're unconventional enough to throw that out there. I think it can work. Why not? The pitching staff has been great this year as it ranks 3rd in the AL in ERA. -

Say what you want about John Danks with the contract and everything, but coming back from shoulder surgery. He has looked like the front end of the rotation John Danks we all thought of these last 5 starts. He has pitched real well this year in my opinion. Contract aside, I'm very happy to go into next year with Sale, RHP, Danks, Quintana, and Santiago. Hopefully we trade Peavy. -
QUOTE (fathom @ Jul 13, 2013 -> 02:33 PM) I would suggest the Tigers as a dark horse for him If that were the case, I would be asking for the world for Rios. Garcia, Castellous (spelling) and Crosby.
-
I think their having one of them alternate DH
-
Merlin just retweeted someone from MLB.com that handles the prospects saying Jacobs will be ranked 7th in Sox farm system
-
Rios brings a all 5 tools to the Pirates line up. Alexei brings more than what they currently have. Both would be huge upgrades to that Pirates offense and defense.
-
Rios' most likely destinations are the Rangers and Pirates in my opinion.

Here's an interesting take from a Boston writer. http://www.masslive.com/redsox/index.ssf/2...with_brand.html

QUOTE (Alpha Dog @ Jul 13, 2013 -> 12:45 PM) So far this is a typical Soxtalk thread regarding Sox player values. Our guys are all worth s*** until they get traded, and then its we never got enough. Lol couldn't agree more

QUOTE (beck72 @ Jul 13, 2013 -> 10:32 AM) Ken Rosenthal said back on June 30 that Rios could be a great get for the Pirates, as they had the lowest OPS in the NL there. But Tabata would seem to be the future there. If I were to trade Rios to the Pirates, I think a package of Dickerson, Kingham and Herrera would do well for both teams.

QUOTE (Knackattack @ Jul 12, 2013 -> 10:25 PM) I don't know if I'm in the minority here but I think this was a really good return for Thornton. Great value in my opinion. I know were in the minority, but what do people expect? We weren't getting a top 5 prospect. This kid has tons of offensive potential. Why not take the risk.

QUOTE (Buehrle>Wood @ Jul 12, 2013 -> 10:10 PM) I would assume AA right? What's our outfield there, Walker, Mitchell, Thompson? I guess we want all those guys getting at bats so perhaps some reshuffling. Make Mitchell the 4th outfielder? Move Thompson to right, Jacobs in left and Walker in center makes the most sense.
-
Anybody, that is complaining about this deal, what did you expect? Everyone wanted Thornton out of here and has been on the downside of his career as of late. Getting Boston's 11th rated prospect according to mlb.com is pretty good value. He's 22 in AA, has very high offensive potential while his defense is a work in progress. I like it.

This is what a Boston fan said on another board: "Hamate bone injury derailed him last year, he was starting to hit much better this year. Last 11 games, hit .410/.510/.718 with 6 doubles and 2 HR Since May 21, .291/.390/.517 with 13 2b and 7 HR in 43 games This does not include last night's game, his AA debut, where he went 2-3 with a 3B." He has been hitting well for the last 2 months. It'll be interesting where he'll be placed.

QUOTE (staxx @ Jul 12, 2013 -> 08:47 PM) If were getting Eaton, I'd like to see the sox get Holmberg/another pitcher instead of Ownings if were getting rid of peavy Owings is a SS. And Anderson is a pitcher
-
I forgot who mentioned it, but if we can get LHP Drake Britton and 3B Michael Almanzar from the Red Sox for Matt Thornton, that's a very good start. Trade Peavy and Crain to the DBacks for Eaton, Owings, Lamb, and Anderson. Trade Lindstrom to the Braves for Tommy La Stella, and a lower tier prospect. Trade Rios to the Rangers for Jorge Alfaro, Nick Williams and a lower tier prospect. That's what I want. I don't think that would be far off. Thoughts?

QUOTE (Marty34 @ Jul 12, 2013 -> 07:39 PM) I think Santiago has improved to the point where at the very least he can be considered an intriguing SP prospect. The screwball is a difficult pitch to control so he probably is going to be a guy who throws a lot of pitches which makes me worry most about his durability, but he has the stuff for top of the rotation. I agree. The kid has tons of potential.
