  1. QUOTE (GreenSox @ Sep 6, 2015 -> 09:58 AM) Sale, Rodon, Samardzija (if he accepts QO or mid-priced free agent), Johnson, Danks One ace, one potential ace. Q trade should shore up holes. Minor league pitching (which is still in A ball) is protected. I don't think you count on Shark. If it is true of the rift between him and Coop then we are better off w a FA. I think Q fills 2 holes but that is a good start.
  2. QUOTE (Lip Man 1 @ Sep 6, 2015 -> 01:56 AM) Got nothing to lose on this but it does say something about the black hole in the organization at third base (and catcher...and DH...) Mark I think outfield is a bigger black hole than DH. Avi or Melky could be a DH if we had a competent outfielder to play LF or RF. Not sure why they don't throw Thompson in there on a regular basis just to be sure he is not the answer.
  3. QUOTE (SouthSideSale @ Sep 6, 2015 -> 12:41 AM) He's not had an excellent season. He's a good option at 4/5 back end of the rotation. He has not had an excellent season but he has had a very good second half. Depending on trades he could be our #3 ( by default) going into next year
  4. QUOTE (caulfield12 @ Sep 5, 2015 -> 11:19 AM) If Danks is our #3, good luck winning more than 72-74 games. I guess it doesn't matter how you slot Erik Johnson, Montas and/or Fulmer...but those rookie pitchers (and EJ's barely past the innings limit, so technically 2nd year) are going to have to pitch a lot better than Samardzija and Rodon this season. Not likely. It's hard to count on more than one of them having an ERA under 4, in all honesty. And it would seem insane to spend money on a FA pitcher (think Latos/Iwakuma level) to replace Samardzija when they need to pitch Johnson/Montas/Fulmer in order to prepare them all for THEORETICALLY trying to compete in 2017 (3rd year of the supposed window). They will probably win 72+ games this year. Danks has been better in the 2nd half than Shark who was our #3 this year. If they trade Q or Rodon and can improve from a terrible offensive team to just average, I think 80-82 wins is very possible next year. The 2nd half defense is much improved over the 1st half but still needs improvement in the outfield. Hopefully a new manager, a couple of solid bats and one + defensive outfielder and I think .500 is realistic.
  5. QUOTE (kitekrazy @ Sep 4, 2015 -> 11:11 PM) Danks is better than Shark. Danks has pitched well the 2nd half of this season considering the way the team has played. With Shark going and the strong possibility of Q or Rodon traded for offense, Danks could actually jump up from 5th to 3rd starter next season.
  6. QUOTE (elrockinMT @ Sep 3, 2015 -> 12:33 PM) I still adhere to the notion that teams win with pitching first and then defense and then a good offense. Get all three together and you have champions. Don't trade away a Cy Young type pitcher for three prospects, who you don't know will perform. I think we saw the preferred route in building a team and that's free agency (Cabrerea, Laroche and Robertson), or a swap of mid level talent for youth (Garcia for Peavy, A Reed for Davidson). There really is no one preferred route. I agree you don't want to trade a Cy Young pitcher for 3 prospects but you might for 3 solid ML players. Include in FA that the Red Sox got Ramirez and Sandoval and their GM lost his job for it. Ad to our FA Duke, Boni and Beckham and it is not preferred either. If we look at the mid level swap, we probably could have done better. We know we could w Avi instead of Iglesias. The preferred route is to use trades, FA and your system to build a team. This winter Hahn will get a chance to make trades and sign FA's that will hopefully improve this team. If it takes trading a stud starting pitcher so be it. The pressure is on him to get a return that betters the team while probably lessening the pitching strength
  7. QUOTE (Jose Abreu @ Sep 2, 2015 -> 04:54 PM) That's ridiculous. How can you call someone an average to good MLB player when he either A. Hasn't played in MLB, or B. Has played one MLB season or less? By your logic, Erik Johnson and Frank Montas are decent MLB players. You are totally lost in this discussion. We are not talking about minor league players. We are talking about players--Betts-Swihart-Bradley that all have played in the majors this season. Bradley has 200 games, Betts 150+ over two seasons and Swihart is a rookie who will play 75 this year. .Johnson and Montas are September call-ups.
  8. QUOTE (Jose Abreu @ Sep 2, 2015 -> 02:27 PM) Come on... you can't call these guys "solid" and whatnot when they've barely played. I'll give you Iglesias, Holt, and probably Bogaerts. The rest are overrated. Josh Reddick is better than Avi. Mookie Betts hit .275 has 13 Hr and 20 stolen bases in 100 games this year while playing CF. Bradley was a AAA allstar this year and has hit .330 since he was called up. Again, you have to trade at the right time before a guy explodes. Now Iglesias and Bogaerts are probably untouchable for us unless it is a "Sale". Bradley is also close to untouchable now w Dombrowski. I think the Boston ship has sailed for Hahn. hopefully he doesn't want Ramirez.
  9. QUOTE (ChiSox59 @ Sep 2, 2015 -> 02:19 PM) Unless the prospects you speak of are the headliners in the deal, that trade would be comically bad for the White Sox. You would be getting a young catcher who is hitting .280 in his rookie year and is considered above average defensively. Bradley tore up AAA this year, is hitting .330 since being recalled at the AllStar break, and is probably the best defensive CF prospect in baseball. That would give us 2 young stars so the prospects will not be the headliners. Again, I doubt the Red Sox will do it now that Dombroski is there. He will use the FA market to get his ace and keep Bradley and trade one of the young catchers, Ramirez + Holt neither of who I would want
  10. QUOTE (Jose Abreu @ Sep 1, 2015 -> 09:59 PM) The Red Sox have one of the most overrated systems in baseball, IMO. Any package for Sale would have to start with Bogaerts, and I doubt Boston would give him up. I don't think Boston's system is overrated. In the last few years they have promoted Bogaerts and Iglesias, two young and very talented shortstops. They have also produced Reddick, Betts and now Bradley as outfielders. They also have produced 2 solid young catchers in Swihart and Vazquez. I was not a Middlebrooks fan but they were able to trade him and they also have Brock Holt who is a super sub in the mold of Zobrist. That is quite a haul in a few years. Their problem has been getting young pitchers and that may change. They have 4 or 5 either in Boston or will be in SP. But my guess is it is a too late. Rumor is they want an ace and dombrowski has set his sights on David Price again. I have posted several times on this site that I was hoping for a Q for Swihart or Vazquez , Bradley + prospects but the way Bradley has exploded even that won't happen. I doubt Sale goes. But I think Q or even Rodon could bring back 2 solid ML players. I have been assuming Q but maybe a Sale/Q combo is better than a Sale/Rodon based on style of pitching.
  11. QUOTE (elrockinMT @ Aug 31, 2015 -> 01:27 PM) Robertson is not going anywhere IMO., However, Danks and Laroche could be. Might not be at waiver deadline but this off season is a strong possibility. Trading Danks will be difficult since he has trade restrictions in his contract.
  12. QUOTE (Flash Tizzle @ Aug 30, 2015 -> 09:00 PM) Ventura wouldn't have the courage to limit Shark's starts entering FA. He'll find Johnson a few starts though in place of Rodon. Those decisions are usally made by the GM. Hahn should have an idea what he wants to do w Shark and Danks for sept. I am sure he will also decide how Micah should be used.
  13. QUOTE (greg775 @ Aug 30, 2015 -> 12:48 AM) Melky is really a bad baseball player any way u slice it. He's another guy who should be a utility player. Sox roster is full of those guys. Not making 14 Mil
  14. QUOTE (ottawa_sox @ Aug 29, 2015 -> 03:31 PM) I'd just as soon have Melky at the plate with the game on the line, as anyone not named Abreu on this team. And his TV persona is easy to like. He seems to have fun, while giving maximum effort. Now, someone like Rios, with is smug, lackadaisical "I don't give a s***" attitude - there was someone to dislike. No excuses there. I wanted to make excuses for Gillespie - his pained, 'fear of failure' look was grating, but it made me give him a grace period. Like I was hoping his confidence or his power or a sports psychologist would show up FWIW-- Avi has 9 game winning RBI's compared to Abreu w 6. Melky has 12
  15. QUOTE (Jerksticks @ Aug 29, 2015 -> 02:21 AM) I think our rebuilding is going pretty well. So well that we took a shot at the WS this year, year 2. So well that alot of you are pissed we didn't do better. You're pissed because, well, damn it actually looked pretty decent on paper after only a one year core-flip. Stay the course fellas. Don't jump ship. We're getting better not worse. I am not so sure. We lost 89 games last year and are on pace to lose 85 this year. We finished 4th in the division last year and probably will this year. Not sure that is a lot of progress. I think we have brought in some younger players which is good but also we have also developed 2 more problems in 3rd and RF. On the plus side we did add Fulmer.

I would like to see them shift him around the outfield and see how he handles all 3 positions. That will give plenty of opportunities to see him hit as well. Then go to SP w some insight to his hitting as well as the position he most helps the team out in.
  17. QUOTE (GreenSox @ Aug 27, 2015 -> 01:15 PM) His bat is insufficient for 2b...probably. But if you go by the last 2 months only, he's okay there. But we do have Micah. And fine, trade him for a 3b, but jettisoning him to the minors in May doesn't max his value. He needs to play regularly over the next 5 weeks. I think Micah would have to be a throw-in as part of a trade for 3B. Now if he comes up and shows he can play ML defense, then his trade value changes. Even though offensive numbers in September can be skewed, defensive play is not.
  18. QUOTE (harkness @ Aug 26, 2015 -> 10:21 PM) The thing is if this team could have made a little winning streak they could have had a chance. tonight is a reminder of how much of a failure the coaching staff is. A game they really needed against a bad team. And this is what they produce. Boston lineup had a bunch of players that were not on the team in June. But they took 2 of 3.
  19. QUOTE (Jerksticks @ Aug 25, 2015 -> 05:23 PM) Yes. Plenty of pieces to get deals like that done. I doubt you get Longoria without including Q or Rodon.
  20. QUOTE (chitownsportsfan @ Aug 26, 2015 -> 01:08 AM) Sanchez is now into positive WAR territory. He's absolutely earned the starting role at 2B headed into spring. If the ORG can bring in someone on the cheap that is a 4 WAR player well hell in that case forget Sanchez, but when that doesn't happen, start him. He's earned it. If he was more highly touted we'd be ecstatic about a slick fielding 23 year old 2B that seems to have a little pop in his bat as well. He's never gonna hit more than 270/320/400 but with his glove at 2B that's an above average starter in today's game. .270 is good but he could also be .230 ish
  21. Everyone in lineup has a hit. What an offense......................
  22. QUOTE (BigHurt3515 @ Aug 25, 2015 -> 09:27 PM) How Thompson isn't starting every game is beyond me With 3 OF spots he should be.
  23. QUOTE (soxfan2014 @ Aug 25, 2015 -> 09:22 PM) Yep. Gotta blame Robin for calling it. FWIW---Red Sox Remy said it was a good bunt, better play by the pitcher, dumb call in that situation.
  24. Trayce-Alexei-Soto= Moe Larry Curley so far.
  25. Kelly is awful. The White Sox will get runs against him.
