7/5 Gamethread: Sox @ Rox Game 2
Noda has been a complete bust, let’s go with Sosa at third and Vargas at first the rest of the season, the coaches will have to do some intense work with Sosa but the Rays Junior Caminerro was pretty bad early this year but has worked like a dog and is now doing a super job at third while hitting the crap out of the ball.

7/5 Gamethread: Sox @ Rox Game 2
Saw a game there in 1978, it’s overrated and cramped with horrible sight lines down the right field line. They have really ruined it with all the advertising, for decades the only sign in the place was for the local Jimmy Fund. Back in the day both Fenway and Wrigley were each just another ballpark. The first guy I remember gushing over Fenway was Red Sox announcer Curt Gowdy who did the 1967 World Series on TV calling it Pinball Baseball, why people rave over Fenway and Wrigley now is because they’re old and represent a different era, neither come close to PNC Park which IMO is the best ballpark in MLB with Oriole Park a close second.

Colson Montgomery has arrived
To me Moncada had no idea what the word motivation meant, I wasn’t a fan of his from day one, in fact he was one of my least favorite Sox players ever.

You took the words right out of my mouth, I almost posted that on my rant about the 3 stooges. I think we might be able to add Colson and Baldwin to the group who want to play.

The big 3 of Moncada, Eloy and Robert have to be the biggest flops in MLB history for a trio of promising players. As Clint Frazier said they just didn’t want to play which didn’t surprise me, obviously when you don’t want to play you aren’t going to bust your butt working on trying to improve and get better, those 3 guys are IMO just plain losers and one of them is still with us.

True.

The Rockies have been on a little bit of a roll so when the season is over the 2024 Sox still might be the team with the most losses in one year, not the worst in the modern era, the 1962 Mets still have the worst record based on winning percentage.

Didn’t he play some 3B in the minors, I’m not sure but I thought I read that somewhere.

Sosa played first early in the year and botched up easy plays. He’s not a good fielder, period. DH might be his best position. Go with Vargas at 3rd, Colson at SS, Meidroth at 2B and I want Teel at IB, it will prolong his career, give Quero more time at catcher with Lee the backup. Why is Noda still here, OPS is under .500, bring Elko back up then if they want they can keep Teel behind the plate.

Like I said I could name many pretty average pitchers who still went out there and could give you a good start pretty consistently, just with the Sox we had Donovon, Horlen, Peters, Dotson not to mention Wilbur Wood who even though a knuckballer gave us 4 years in a row with over 300 innings pitched.

Not necessarily complete games but how about at least 7 innings. One thing is nowadays you need 13 man pitching staffs which cuts down on position players, you pick out McDowell but I have seen hundreds of pitchers who have had great careers pitching many many innings, ever hear of Nolan Ryan, Tom Seaver, Steve Carlton and our own Billy Pierce and Mark Buerhle plus so many more. Part of the problem is the money, they have to protect their investments in these guys.

Unfortunately you are probably right, I was hoping we could steal a game in LA and take 2 in Colorado for a .500 road trip, maybe they will shock us a win today but don't hold your breath.

Definitely a different game that I grew with. The players are without a doubt more athletic, I’m seeing defensive plays these days that are simply unbelievable, we’ve probably seen many catches now that have been better than Willie Mays’ great catch in the 1954 World Series. That being said, what drives me crazy about today’s game is guys are constantly swinging for the fences when all they need is a well placed single to win a game. Many outfielders have trouble hitting the cut off man on throws back to the infield, most teams wind up the year with more Ks than hits. Greg mentioned how pitching has changed, today pitching is entirely a different animal, just 20 years ago the Sox won the World Series with 4 complete game victories, now a team can go an entire year without a complete game. A starting pitcher now has a quality start if he goes 5 innings, give me a break. All that said, I still love Baseball, it’s a sport that if you are watching a game you will probably see something you’ve never seen before. I’ll be 80 soon and I still pull for the Sox, I still get nervous sometimes and if the Sox have a small lead going to the 9th inning I won’t watch, I didn’t stay up last night but that game is one I would have gone to bed and as it turned out that ninth inning would have caused me to lose sleep.

I thought that Sosa was decent at 3B last year, it’s becoming pretty clear that he’s not a good second baseman and is lousy at first base also. Going forward he might be the primary DH, he’s got the power and hopefully we will see him become a 20+ homer guy.

Baldwin's back ALL RIGHT
I wonder if they’re going to give him more than 3 ABs this time.

Colson Montgomery to AZ Complex
Rojas probably should stay as a utility infielder, who else is there.

“The 78” is alive and well for the Sox, Bears are 'advancing' Hammond development
Agree.

I don’t want Sosa at first, he botched a few plays there earlier in the year, I like your strongest infield scenario.
