Borchard hit a 504-foot home run? Where?

Interesting Phil Rogers Article
let's see Valdez, but I'm not sold on him as a legit prospect. Why? He's got ZERO power -- 11 extra base hits (7 doubles) in 252 at bats in a great hitters park. And he also has only 10 walks. No wonder Ozzie likes him. That's precisely the kind of hitter he was. His speed is just OK, too, 11 steals while being caught 5 times while doubling into 5 DPs. Only other factor is: What kind of fielder is he? Range? Arm? He appears to be a guy who will have the bat knocked out of his hands by a good Major league pitcher.

Garcia missing another start
shut down Freddy -- and back off on Buehrle. He's pitched wayyyyy too many innings for a team that is going nowhere. back off on the dude. NOW

Interesting Phil Rogers Article
play Borchard every game. Play Harris every game. Play Uribe every game. play Crede every game. take a look at Valdez. start cotts the rest of the year. start Stewart/ Diaz or Munoz whenever possible. Keep Garcia and buehrle on light pitch counts. quit using Marte so much and look at a few young arms. this season is toast. Let's start planning for 2005

Jon Garland
Garland is arbitration eligible after the season. I like him as a 4 or 5 starter OK. But reading between the lines, it's obvious the Sox are starting to doubt if he has the right stuff to be a winning pitcher. Manuel never trusted him. Ozzie started out in his corner, but even he has gotten exasperated by what he has seen. And Ozzie is an optimist. I would not be surprised to see the Sox trade him because the guy has value. He's got a decent arm and a ton of experience for somebody his age. I could see Garland going to Atlanta, working with Leo Mazzone and becoming a really good pitcher.

Freddy scratched
Frankly, I'm more worried about Buehrle. He's thrown a s***pot of innings for three straight years. They need to back off on him, too. As for Grilli, his ERA is nearly 5 in Triple A. His control is similar to Danny Wright. I don't expect much.
-
Freddy scratched
allegedly tightness in his right forearm let's hope that is all it is -- and let's hope the Sox take it as a message not to abuse Freddy, Buehrle and Garland in a fruitless push for a division title. ease up on those guys, please. the season is toast. Save the wear and tear on elbows and rotator cuffs for another fight

Borchard
improving command of the strike zone is a start. After taking last winter off, the guy HAS to play winter ball and find a way to shorten his swing. Crede has many of the same problems.

8/26 Maggs a "risk"
better if the Sox kept their pie holes shut. Why get a reputation with ALL players as a management group that plays rough with players. What's to gain? If Maggs is leaving anyway, suck it up and go on. Don't try to hurt his value. Word gets out among players that it's not a place where you want to play because the GM talks too much. silly stuff

HOW 'BOUT DEM PADRES!!!
is ex-Sox catcher Humberto Quintero doing anything for San Diego? dude is better behind the plate than Olivo, but his stick work used to be real lite, with NO power

Bench Crede
I agree. Gload has several major plusses: He's cheap. He's left-handed. He can pinch hit. He can play -- nearly adequately -- in the outfield. And he does not complain (a la Daubach). Keep him around as a bench guy. If he's a starter at a power position, we're in big trouble.
-
Bench Crede
Play the following 1b -- Konerko 2b -- Harris ss -- Uribe 3b -- Crede LF -- Lee CF -- Rowand RF -- Borchard C -- Davis Sox need to make a solid determination of the strengths and weaknesses of all these players -- and then figure out the lineup for next season. There is NOTHING at Charlotte that can help this team win (don't say Valdez; he has 10 extra base hits total, eight walks and eight steals in 240 at bats. His batting average is OK, but he's got no power, no special ability to get on base and no ability to steal a base). Brian Anderson is at least a year away -- and he's not showing a ton of power. So we need to figure out if Davis, Borchard, Crede, Uribe and Harris have any chance of improving into winning big-league players. Forget benching Crede. And forget the four-man rotation. Save the wear and tear on our arms, the only above average asset we have.

Maggs new contract in 2005
Unless we sign Randy Johnson, Tom Seaver, Steve Carlton, Sandy Koufax and Bob Gibson, that lineup -- Valdez, Harris, Borchard, Crede, Davis -- won't win 70 games.

Twins trade
Dougie had gotten into Gardenhire's doghouse for b****ing about playing time and not being able to concentrate because of the trade. Dude was deadwood. Morneau is their future. So they dumped him for the Cubs' Number Two prospect. They get better at first base -- and get a pitching prospect. Not a bad deal. Almost as good as dumping AJ Motormouth and getting one of the best closers in the AL. I dislike the Twins immensely, but I have to give their GM props. They keep turning over that team -- Lawton, AJ, Dougie, Milton, Rick Reed, LaTroy, Kenny Rogers, Guardado, Hocking -- and they're still sitting in first place. Sad, but true.

JUL SOX evaluation thread, 2004
ARow, Shingo and Freddy are three of the few players who deserve any love.

Yo! It's August 3rd almost!
need the paper for the schedule, too
-
Frank Thomas sighting
yeah, but when is Maggs coming back? that's the bat we need.
-
Joe Mauer
I've heard one report that he is basically cooked as a catcher. There is serious talk that the Twins are going to have to turn him into a first baseman (unlikely with Morneau around) or third baseman (more likely because Koskie makes too much). Just what I've heard.

Yofu Throws a No Hitter; McCarthy K's 16
Isn't Yofu around 30? Wouldn't he be more helpful than Mike Jackson?
-
Jose Contreras
That's pretty funny. And did you know Rhondell White was once married to Jerry Manuel's daughter?
-
Who turned us down, Walker or Kendall?
my guess is Walker. We need a left-handed bat and a right fielder. had to figure Kenny went after him hard.

LETS GO BOSOX
Schedule didn't do much to stop them this week In six games against the Sox -- White and Red -- they went 5-1. We better have another plan beyond waiting for the schedule to stop them, folks.
