  1. QUOTE (GreenSox @ Oct 23, 2015 -> 03:48 PM) And LF, which is really a bigger problem than RF since the bad player in LF is immovable thanks to the love of declining veterans. (and, of course, the CW hereon that Melky is a good player and Avi is terrible is just daft). And to contend, 4/5 will need to be upgraded. Of course, more declining veterans may be the fix Hahn and Williams seek to upgrade these positions. Melky has succeeded in Major League Baseball before. Avi has not come close. Not that daft.
  2. QUOTE (greg775 @ Oct 23, 2015 -> 02:23 PM) He's the standard for an excellent all around catcher. Who is regarded as better than him? Who told you this? Buster Posey is the best in the game right now.
  3. He openly attacked their superstar - they want him out and pure statistical arguments have less sway here. Still some sway, just less. Fangraphs and B-Ref have conflicting info on what he's getting paid next year ($13 and $11 million, respectively), anyone know the true number there?
  4. QUOTE (OmarComing25 @ Oct 23, 2015 -> 01:37 PM) Is a 0.4 mph drop really that meaningful though? With the context that most pitchers throw harder in the playoffs, it might be.
  5. QUOTE (Y2JImmy0 @ Oct 23, 2015 -> 01:35 PM) Would anyone be willing to take Papelbon back in a deal for LaRoche? Would this even be something Washington would do or would they just pay Papelbon and release him? I'd be willing. I'm not sure if Washington would. They absolutely have to get rid of Papelbon and they'd rather make the trade and pay LaRoche than release Papelbon and pay nobody. But I wonder if Papelbon has more value than that.
  6. QUOTE (Leonard Zelig @ Oct 23, 2015 -> 12:33 PM) Alexei, Laroche, Garcia for Wong Sanchez plays SS for a season Melky to DH STL moves Peralta to 3rd, Carp to 2nd, Garica replaces Heyward Why would the Cardinals make that trade?
  7. QUOTE (ChiSoxFanMike @ Oct 23, 2015 -> 12:14 PM) That's what I figured, but I doubt that the Sox would eat $12 million to run LaRoche out of town and I don't know if Avi would accept a minor league assignment or a bench spot at this point. Avi doesn't have to accept a minor league assignment, they can option him. They won't, but they can.
  8. QUOTE (ChiSoxFanMike @ Oct 23, 2015 -> 12:03 PM) Where would Avi and Melky go? I know you weren't asking me, but I'd say you cut bait on LaRoche. Melky can DH on days Trayce is in the lineup and play left when he isn't. Avi can go to the bench, or the minors, or a gulag.
  9. Somebody took an intro creative writing class.
  10. QUOTE (whtsoxfan @ Oct 22, 2015 -> 07:28 PM) This guy seems salty : https://thenohustleblog.wordpress.com/2015/...white-sox-fans/ Published by Michael Ryne An aspiring sports journalist who knows a bit too much about baseball for his own good. wut lol
  11. QUOTE (Tony82087 @ Oct 22, 2015 -> 09:26 PM) I agree with basically all of this, but the entire front office could have been let go over Tyrus Thomas/LaMarcus Aldridge. Just want to be fair. Jury's still out on that one.
  12. Projections are fun, but obviously these need to be taken with a shaker of salt. Steamer's always kind of off with playing time estimates, especially before the rosters are complete... I don't expect Gordon Beckham to get 200 plate appearances with the Sox, for example. And how many seasons in a row has Jose Quintana beaten his projections now? Approximately 18? And also, Jeff Samardzija is listed there. That's humorous. But Steamer at least knows that Trayce ought to be ahead of Avi on the depth chart.
  13. QUOTE (scs787 @ Oct 22, 2015 -> 03:07 PM) I need ammo. Someone posted a picture calling the Cell ghetto. I replied to it with a comment stating "Fun fact, Wrigleyville has a higher crime rate than the area surrounding the Cell." A guy replied wanting proof. I got that info from some posters here but surely I can't just say "[insert posters name] said it on soxtalk". So where can I find said information? Last 30 days, see Bridgeport vs Lakeview - http://crime.chicagotribune.com/chicago/community
  14. ^^^ Pasting it three times means I agree a lot.
  15. QUOTE (OmarComing25 @ Oct 22, 2015 -> 02:38 PM) Pretty sure Votto would be OK here. This fear of getting absolutely anyone from the NL is starting to get out of hand. 16. I don't think the Reds would have to eat any money in a Votto deal. Even though his contract will be a burden, right now he could easily get something similar on the free agent market. He is one of baseball's top talents when he's healthy and if you want that guy on your team, you're gonna have to bid for him. Demanding that they eat a bunch of money isn't gonna get Joey Votto.
  17. QUOTE (Alexeihyeess @ Oct 22, 2015 -> 12:49 PM) That's his reputation, but a lot of SS miss plays. You dont know if its focus or whether people think his cap isn't on right and just assume its focus. It's not secret the Cubs dont like him very much and I'm guessing Maddon is a part of that. If Theo's expecting a front-line starter in return for him he's getting laughed off the phone. Nobody is trading Quintana for a package built around Castro. But what if the price drifts lower? What if Theo's willing to sell him for Montas? Im not saying I take that deal, but I sure as hell think about it. With the rest of the Cubs players* they want Sale and I wouldn't give them more than Quintana for anyone other than Russell. Castro is the guy who's realistic and intriguing enough to make a phone call over. *who may be available, I dont think the Cubs are looking to send Bryant or Rizzo packing. I've always like Castro. I would give up Montas for him, no problem. His contract is long, yes, but it really isn't bad at all (4/$37, meh). I think he's as good a bet for a bounceback as anybody; I think luck has had a lot to do with his two bad seasons (look how he hit more ground balls those years yet had a lower BABIP); I think he's a prime example of the mythical Change of Scenery Guy. He's cheaper than Alexei Ramirez next year. He's, what, 10 years younger? I know who I'd rather have, and I'd give up some talent to do so. With the eternal caveat that it depends on price, Castro is exactly the type of guy we should be trying to trade for. I think more would agree if he wasn't a Cubbie. I've seen a lot of people posit that we'll pick up Alexei's option because the stopgap free agent shortstops aren't any good. That is true, but Castro could be a building block. He's no stopgap.
  18. QUOTE (caulfield12 @ Oct 22, 2015 -> 09:34 AM) So naturally we can get Rizzo, Bryant and Russell because Chris Sale is the greatest pitcher since Koufax and Randy Johnson, except when he's facing the Twins. That would still probably be an underpay by the Cubs because of the bargain contract. This is what's known as a straw man. There's a happy middle ground you aren't acknowledging. QUOTE (caulfield12 @ Oct 22, 2015 -> 09:36 AM) What did we get for Santos, Jenks, Humber, Crain, Floyd and Danks? Oh, that's right, pretty much nothing. Dude. Stop. What kind of debate is this? Stop f***ing naming random players. None of them have anything to do with Sale. Your original proposal was trash and that's why you're getting heat about it. That doesn't extend to "OH EVERYBODY THINKS WE SHOULD GET SEVEN TOP PROSPECTS FOR SALE WHOOOAAAAA YOU GUYS ARE DELUSIONAL." All it means is your original proposal was trash.
  19. QUOTE (LittleHurt05 @ Oct 22, 2015 -> 09:23 AM) To be fair, if Samardzija's name was Kyle Ryan and had the same salary, he wouldn't have finished 11th in innings pitched. Part of the reason he pitched so much was simply based on reputation and the cost to acquire/play him. True in general, but a reputation has to have been earned somehow. Also in Samardzija's case he saved most of his badness for August and after. Up to that point he'd been solid, if still a minor disappointment.
  20. QUOTE (KyYlE23 @ Oct 22, 2015 -> 09:11 AM) You somehow seem to fail to understand Sale's worth in your eagerness to list out all of the cubs minor leaguers that you know
  21. QUOTE (Jose Abreu @ Oct 22, 2015 -> 08:01 AM) Maybe that's because Erik Johnson made 6 starts and did not qualify as an MLB pitcher in 2015? There are definitely not 2+ pitchers per team who were worse than Samardzija. That's exactly his point. The very worst pitchers don't end up qualifying. Samardzija put up a stinker of a year, but he was also 11th in innings pitched, which has value because it means you're not turning the ball over to the Kyle Ryan's of the world instead. Also, since nobody's narrowed it to just starting pitchers and most relievers are just failed starters, I'll suggest that there are dozens of relief pitchers who would have fared worse than Samardzija if you had tried to stretch them out and given them 30 starts.
  22. We are nearing the end of Week 3 of this thread.
  23. QUOTE (Quinarvy @ Oct 20, 2015 -> 12:08 PM) Anyone know if Avi has any options left? He might need the Erik Johnson rehab program. Pretty sure he has options. He doesn't show up on this list of out-of-options guys from the start of 2015, and he didn't spend any time in Charlotte last year, so.
