Thank you all for helping me restore my sanity.

Did anybody see Brandon McCarthy's nonsense on Twitter tonight? He psted a link to an article stating the Royals were 30 games over .500 and commented, "bad math." He then stated that an 80-50 team is 15 games over .500, not 30, because they would be at .500 if you replaced 15 of their wins with losses. And a whole bunch of people agreed with him, and he was also really snarky and dickish towards anybody who disagreed. What?!? I've never in my life seen the phrase "over .500" interpeted that way. He's crazy, right? Or else he's trolling. The Sox are 62-70, 8 games under .500. Somebody put my mind at ease here.

QUOTE (Jerksticks @ Sep 3, 2015 -> 07:32 PM) I wonder if our DH position has struck out more in the last 5 years than any other team at any other position. We've had basically the same me-first type of guy for 5 years. Can somebody look that up? They're second. Since the start of 2011, Sox DH's have struck out in 24.3% of their plate appearances, which leads all AL teams except the Astros, at 29.5%. Houston hasn't been an AL team for all of that time, but that seems like a wide enough gap to give them the title. SOURCE

Our offense is middle-of-the-pack in terms of K rate. Same against lefties. I don't think Sale would be more likely to strike out 17 White Sox than most other teams.

Hats off to Jones and Robertson today. That's a formidable end of the bullpen if Jones is truly back. Samardzija salvaged his outing from the dumpster.

Thompson is 1 for his last 12.

QUOTE (Balta1701 @ Sep 3, 2015 -> 02:42 PM) Who plays when there's a lefty on the mound? Who plays when there's a righty? Shuck has reverse platoon splits, he'd take lefties.
-
QUOTE (pettie4sox @ Sep 3, 2015 -> 02:33 PM) Shuck is a competent defender and a decent bat. That's more that can be said about a few of the alleged starters RV throws out there. I wouldn't play him ahead of any of our outfielders. That includes Avi, who we perhaps still have to learn some things about. We know what Shuck is, and it's a 4th outfielder. A singles hitter. I'd be okay with him platooning with LaRoche.
-
QUOTE (greg775 @ Sep 3, 2015 -> 02:20 PM) Shuck probably should be playing every day. No.

QUOTE (Balta1701 @ Sep 3, 2015 -> 01:13 PM) Serious Q: what does it take for the White Sox to not offer him a QO? Is he there already? Not sure. To this point I've concluded that if he accepted a QO it wouldn't be that bad; we'd be getting a generally dependable veteran on a one year deal. I'm wavering though.

He didn't allow a run in the first inning.

Erik Johnson Starting Sunday, Sale Bumped to Monday

QUOTE (Harry Chappas @ Sep 3, 2015 -> 11:40 AM) I know nobody gives a crap about fantasy sports but I am playing against a guy with Chris Sale this week and the week ends Sunday thus he loses a start. Best White Sox news all season. It's the last week of the regular season for me and one of the teams competing with me for second place (and a bye week in the playoffs) has Sale, so I can relate. -
Colleen Kane @ChiTribKane 4m4 minutes ago Erik Johnson will start for the White Sox in Kansas City on Sunday. Chris Sale bumped to Monday.

QUOTE (Dick Allen @ Sep 3, 2015 -> 10:25 AM) Where do the nets stop? I would venture to guess the White Sox are currently being sued by someone hit by a ball in the upper deck. It seems more people are getting hit and injured now than ever before, and IMO, that has to do with cell phones. Email, pictures, internet...people aren't paying as much attention. I agree that phones are a huge problem, but I think MLB has to adapt to that reality and expand the nets down the foul lines. I don't know how far. I'm sure people armed with studies about the average child's reaction time or whatever could figure that out, but there's a good common sense solution. Net off the most vulnerable areas and you'll have fewer injuries and fewer lawsuits. That's a useful enough goal, we don't have to wipe the lawsuits out.
-
QUOTE (southsider2k5 @ Sep 3, 2015 -> 09:20 AM) The first step is to pay attention. Sure, but he's right. Most fans aren't catlike corner infielders who can react to a laser hit into the stands. The reality is that to a lot of people, the game itself isn't the only attraction at a baseball game. Now your effing phone shouldn't be one of them, but somebody could just as easily get hit while paying a beer vendor. There's no good reason the fans should be in danger. Just put nets up, it's common sense.

QUOTE (scs787 @ Sep 2, 2015 -> 11:17 AM) I was told when throwing out similar stats from John Danks last year that that type of cherry picking is silly. Not the same thing. 1, flavum's not trying to prove a point, he's just putting the info out there. 2, Sale is still having a fantastic season despite his handful of bad outings, whereas John Danks last year... wasn't.

QUOTE (whitesoxfan99 @ Sep 2, 2015 -> 11:14 AM) When every single one of your starting pitchers has an ERA that is higher (and that in some cases is significantly higher than) their peripherals would indicate it is a pretty damn good sign that your defense is f***ing terrible. It absolutely is, but I think it's been less of a problem for Sale. His K-rate has to signify that. Sale's ERA is a little higher because he's allowed big innings. His peripheral stats remain great because of how dominant he is when he pitches well.

Supreme Court to Decide Whether Gays Nationwide Can Marry
shysocks replied to StrangeSox's topic in The Filibuster
QUOTE (StrangeSox @ Sep 2, 2015 -> 11:10 AM) Makes you wonder how much of the religious-based homophobia is really more homophobia-with-religion-as-a-convenient-crutch. Most of it. Otherwise there'd be similar outrage against all other forms of sinning. Unless being gay is a worse sin than others, I don't know the degrees of sinning. -
Only a few hours into MGSV so I can't pass judgment, but I can already tell that the scope of the game is going to be unbelievable. Playing stealthily seems a lot more difficult than it was in other Metal Gears; I'm finding that guys will notice me where they definitely wouldn't have if it were Ground Zeroes, for example. Maybe you unlock stuff that helps out.

QUOTE (GreenSox @ Sep 2, 2015 -> 07:40 AM) There are three pieces to Sale's value: his quality as a pitcher, his cheap contract in terms of dollars, and the number of years. The problem with dealing with the Dodgers or Red Sox is that the cheap contract doesn't mean that much to them. To get full value you would have to look at teams for him that would mean a lot such as the Astros, Royals, or pirates, or even the Cardinals. I don't know that those systems are strong enough. The The Dodgers are Red Sox may be willing to take contracts as part of the value but I don't think that really Sox much and hopefully that's not what the Sox would be looking for. As for Quintana, I'm just not sure how big that haul would be That's a good angle, I hadn't really considered that before. QUOTE (Jose Abreu @ Sep 2, 2015 -> 08:02 AM) The return for Quintana should be similar to the return for Sale. They're both aces. Sale's return should only be slightly better. I love Quintana but this just isn't true.

QUOTE (SoxPride18 @ Sep 1, 2015 -> 04:11 PM) My buddy just tweeted at me saying he heard people discussing this on the radio (didn't say what station) and that that tweet was meant to be for a fan...... I don't know if I buy that. If you remove Castro from the equation, I can maybe see it reading that way. Especially if a caller used the word "bro" or something. Who knows.

QUOTE (Balta1701 @ Sep 1, 2015 -> 03:57 PM) A couple of those you've got me, but you also are pretty selective in what you bolded. For example, referring to $100 million, you bolded the line right next to this one but ignored this: That's because you put a hedge in everything you say. It's fine, I do the exact same thing. But I also pasted the entirety of the posts to avoid taking anything out of context, and like I said before, the tone is very evident. All those posts were around the same part of the season during which you're now doing it again. How about instead of analyzing ledgers we all just acknowledge that aside from the impossibility of the Sox spending $200+ million, we don't know what they're gonna do?
