QUOTE (Baron @ Nov 29, 2015 -> 06:04 PM) They certainly dont need that 3.4 offensive WAR. Basically. I'm cool with either. I think Frazier can plug into the 4-hole while I'm not sure where they'd start Lawrie at.

QUOTE (Baron @ Nov 29, 2015 -> 02:53 PM) Honestly that's not a bad deal for a guy like Zimmerman. It's just Detroit has too much junk on their payroll that really dampens this signing. I agree with this. He had a down year last season but up until that point he was a front of the line starter.

QUOTE (Chicago White Sox @ Nov 29, 2015 -> 11:41 AM) Right or wrong, I still see us making a serious run at Cespedes. Our team desperately needs to add a power hitter to our lineup and he's perhaps the only option available that won't cost us a draft pick or prospects. Plus in a corner spot, he's a significant upgrade over Avi & Melky defensively. Agree. Having him hit behind Abreu would be a nice addition. I know people get on him for OBP, but if the guy is hitting 4th, swing the bat and drive in runs. Not saying OBP doesn't matter, but I think it matters more or less depending on the spot in the order.

Only 15 free agents left with QOs. Hope they all sign on different teams without protected protected first round picks (or the Padres with 2 comp picks before us).

QUOTE (BlackSox13 @ Nov 29, 2015 -> 06:11 AM) They meaning the Sox or Tribe? The Tribe can afford 20M annually with less holes to fill than the Sox which is why I think the Tribe signs Upton. I really wouldn't mind if he signed with the Indians. Upton seems like the kind of guy who will never live up to a big contract due to his injury history, k-rate and defense. With our luck, he'll be Adam Dunn 3.0. Out of the big 3 outfield targets, he's the one I want the least.
-
QUOTE (Baron @ Nov 28, 2015 -> 10:33 PM) Well that's a little unexpected I'm not really surprised. I expect them to sign 2 guys not in the top tier (guys like Zimmermann, Samardzija, Iwakuma, Leake, Cueto, etc.). Some combination of them.
-
QUOTE (ChiSoxFanMike @ Nov 28, 2015 -> 05:23 PM) Nothing, I was just curious because I thought I remembered him having a son. Don't have to have a wife to have a son.

QUOTE (BlackSox13 @ Nov 28, 2015 -> 11:17 AM) They really do need an ace and they could have gone after Jordan Zimmermann who should be cheaper than Price. Then again, I don't know much about the Jays finances either. I'm quite surprised they didn't go after Samardzija. Maybe Samardzija's asking price is too much? There's nothing impressive about that rotation when looking beyond Estrada and Stroman. The Jays offense will need to continue mashing to win games. I've always read that the ownership up there has a ton of money but seem unwilling to spend the big bucks.
-
QUOTE (ChiSoxFanMike @ Nov 28, 2015 -> 10:48 AM) I was thinking the exact same thing. If they blew $36 million on Happ, why didn't they try to save the money and then go after Price? Yes, I realize that $36 and $200+ million are very different contracts, but the Jays already have enough #4-#5 starter types. They need an ace. I hear that Marcus Stroman kid is pretty good.

QUOTE (SoxPride18 @ Nov 28, 2015 -> 10:59 AM) He might be a lefty, but he still has back end of the rotation potential. If anything, maybe he could be a valuable man out of the pen. Dietrich could very well play 2B instead of Sanchez. Dietrich is a poor man's Ben Zobrist, imo. He did hit pretty well last year, so it's not like he would be strictly on the bench Howie Kendrick has a draft pick attached to him, he's out of the question. You don't even have Sanchez listed at 2B. You have Cabrera there.

QUOTE (SoxPride18 @ Nov 28, 2015 -> 10:33 AM) Sign 2B/SS Asdrubal Cabrera 2 years/20 million Trade SP Chris Beck and SP Brandon Brennan to the A's for 3B Brett Lawrie Trade 1B Adam LaRoche (Balances the money), SP Frankie Montas, SP Myles Jaye, and OF Adam Engel to the Rockies for OF Carlos Gonzalez and 1B Corelle Prime Trade RF Avisail Garcia to the Phillies for SP Jesse Biddle Trade RP Zach Putnam and SP Thad Lowry for UTIL Derek Dietrich CF Adam Eaton (L) 2B Asdrubal Cabrera (S) 1B Jose Abreu LF Carlos Gonzalez (L) 3B Brett Lawrie DH Melky Cabrera (S) RF Trayce Thompson C Alex Avila (L) SS Tyler Saladino OF J.B Shuck, C Tyler Flowers, 1B/3B Mike Olt, UTIL Derek Dietrich SP Chris Sale (L) SP Jose Quintana (L) SP Carlos Rodon (L) SP Erik Johnson SP John Danks (L) RP Jacob Turner (long man) RP Jake Petricka RP Dan Jennings (L) RP Tommy Kahnle RP Zach Duke (L) RP Nate Jones CP David Robertson Thoughts? I wouldn't trade Putnam for a guy who's just going to be on the bench. He has a pretty solid arm and trading him for a bench guy I feel would be selling low. Especially when teams put a lot of stock on good bullpens now,

QUOTE (Balta1701 @ Nov 28, 2015 -> 09:15 AM) Even when he was really bad last year he still put up a .666 OPS against righties. The bulk average for catchers in the AL was .676. Even if he's not healthy that can still be an upgrade over Flowers out there against righties. Exactly. Hard to hate on this signing. They will be an adequate platoon and for about $6.5 mill.
-
QUOTE (BlackSox13 @ Nov 28, 2015 -> 04:10 AM) So who do you suggest the Sox should have picked up that's actually available? It's not like the league is full of catchers that can hit and play defense. Agree. And honestly if this guy's healthy, I think it's a great signing at $2.5 million.
-
QUOTE (Balta1701 @ Nov 28, 2015 -> 08:37 AM) Well the good news is, we didn't go after him aggressively and then have something like that happen. True
-
QUOTE (Balta1701 @ Nov 28, 2015 -> 08:45 AM) Looking at his numbers over the last several years, his offense being better than Alexei et al is almost entirely driven by his slugging percentage, he's had OBP of .299, .307, and .315 the last 3 years. His slugging seemed like it has been trending down since 2011, bottoming out in 2014. Last year his HR rate bumped back up a bit, but at the same time he also was hitting a lot more weak infield fly balls & similar hits like that, so from his numbers I question whether a .744 OPS is what you'd get from him on a 3-4 deal. I certainly can't rule out the .700 OPS/.694 OPS he put up in 2013 and 2014 being more representative of what you'd get from him going forward. I'd take him on a 2-year deal 3 at most and flip him next off-season when Anderson is ready (or move to second if Sanchez/Johnson is struggling).
-
Literally only way I'd take him now is if he was just given to us.
-
QUOTE (BlackSox13 @ Nov 27, 2015 -> 05:19 PM) Very true but will the Sox be willing to wait another year? A player like Lawrie coming off of a down year is the type of trade Avi would fit into so if Oakland showed interest then roll with it. Both teams would be banking on each players potential upside. What would be the plan after that deal then? Thompson in right? Acquire another outfielder making LaRoche and Thompson platoon partners (Thompson in left, Melky DH against lefties)?

QUOTE (WhiteSoxLifer @ Nov 27, 2015 -> 05:55 PM) #Royals, #Angels, #WhiteSox, #Mets and #Yankees have shown interest in Asdrubal Cabrera, according to Venezuelan journalist @EfrainZavarce. https://twitter.com/MaxWildstein/status/670371550370000896 Los dos equipos de Nueva York, además de @whitesox, @Royals y @Angels, se han interesado por Asdrúbal Cabrera, asegura una fuente. #MLB https://twitter.com/EfrainZavarce/status/670279920954777600 Not sure who this guy is I'm not too surprised. No way are they going to trot two first full year players as our starting double play combo.
-
QUOTE (GreenSox @ Nov 27, 2015 -> 02:15 PM) They usually do. They fixate on a player, get all ga ga. But how about the Sox actually get a paper premium on a trade. The bottom line is that Lawrie hasn't done squat. He was a .6 WAR last year He's still young and could improve. Avi was worse, but you can't trade much for Lawrie and certainly no real prospect. I don't think it'd take much but more than just Avi.
-
QUOTE (Knackattack @ Nov 27, 2015 -> 01:36 PM) You know I'm thinking a route I haven't seen on the thread yet: Brett Lawrie for Avisail Garcia. Both teams swap young, cheap, underperforming players. We would need to add a piece or two.
-
QUOTE (SouthSideSale @ Nov 27, 2015 -> 02:57 AM) That's fine with me. Me too but it seems like most posters on here want us to sit on our hands and keep all of them and make no improvements.
-
QUOTE (SouthSideSale @ Nov 26, 2015 -> 12:18 PM) Because he's a .6 WAR compared to 2.2 Valencia. I'd take Valencia over him. That said, I'm not dipping into the farm for either. Yeah I want either but not at too high a cost. Articles I've read had mentioned they'd been calls on Lawrie from AL teams. Would have to imagine we're one.
-
What do you guys think it would take to get Lawrie?
-
QUOTE (GreenSox @ Nov 25, 2015 -> 10:44 AM) Jed Lowrie traded back to As. Astros and As love that guy. He was superfluous with Astros. Probably trying to free up salary to bring in good 1B. I recommend Adam Laroche. I read a fan on another message board say this may mean they dfa Valencia soon. I would scoop him up.
-
QUOTE (pettie4sox @ Nov 25, 2015 -> 09:22 AM) He looks like a good base runner and defender. Yeah he definitely looks like a ball player.
