That's fun. I started digging down another rabbit hole last year where I reviewed the payroll from season to season to see what the Sox spent on wastefully that year instead of if they had signed Harper or Machado (starting with 2019). It was frustrating and I quit after a couple of seasons because I didn't even need to pick out who we wasted money on the first couple of years. They would have just easily fit and been well below luxury tax.

Still gotta have a decent one to possibly trade. Especially if you grab a cheap veteran from free agency and hope for a good half season.

I don't understand how there isn't a work around. Like a team could promise to extend him a huge extension after his first year and no one could really prove that that was agreed to before he signed.

He didn't actually. He was traded during the season before he was a free agent so he wasn't eligible to receive one. It's part of why I liked the idea of signing him a year ago as well to a 1 year/high AAV deal. I feel like he would be a decent buy low, bounce back candidate, especially if you can get something interesting along with him. Would have the benefit of a regular Spring Training as well instead of signing late into March.

If he starts on the roster day 1 (any team he signs with is agreeing to do this) and never gets sent down, he will be a FA after 6 years. You are correct. And we would be awarded a draft pick if he would put him on the roster day 1 and he wins Roy right?

Yeah the only problem is I don't see these kind of moves happening with Jerry around. Jordan Montgomery is another guy I would like to see salary dumped with a prospect attached to us. If he pitches good, he can opt out after a year and you can offer a QO. Would check the box of having a lefty starter, veteran guy on a young staff. Plus, the D-Backs owner bashed him. Probably very available haha

And what Getz will probably have to do under Jerry

Maybe just good moves in general = trading Robert, signing someone decent to eat innings, etc
