I'm starting to get very excited about the possibility of Martinez in the middle of our lineup next season. It would be awesome if Boston does not give the QO since the Sox seem very hesitant to give up any draft picks.
I wonder if he opts out, if Martinez will sign pretty quickly since he might not want to wait around til March again. If Boras knows a deal is out there to be had, Martinez might want to get it early before someone pivots to, say Castellanos.
There is that goofy story about the White Sox giving a tryout for Urquidy...meanwhile the Astros scout was hiding behind some trees and then the Astros signed him. That might have to trump my Eaton dislike....GO Nats!!!
Really looking forward to this game 7 as well and just want to see a close, exciting game to finish it off. Everyone should be available off the bench so it will be interesting to see if the Astros go to Cole before Urquidy. I guess we will see tonight how big the trade for Grienke was. I have been finding myself disliking Adam Eaton more and more so I have been rooting for the Astros but I am really just hoping for a great finish to the season.
I agree that it is very possible that both have down years next year for that reason. That being said, I really love the combination of pure stuff and demeanor of Strasburg on the mound and so I would pick him.
By the way, I did not start this thread with any feeling that the Sox would realistically pursue either of them. I was just curious who others here would prefer for the Sox hypothetically. I was not meaning to suggest they would pursue the 2 whales of the pitching market this year.
With each of them dominating the last 2 nights I wanted to pose the question.
This is not asking whether the Sox would pay the market price for either guy but all things being equal, who would you choose to anchor the White Sox staff starting next year...Cole or Strasburg?
Can Martinez get a QO if he opts out?
I've read speculation that the Mets will tender Wheeler and in that case , I would guess the Sox would not pursue him.
But as you say, we will know soon. It should be an interesting off season.
I've got no axe to grind against Eaton but didn't that home run make the game like 10-2. Not exactly a clutch homer...he ran into one against one of the Astros lesser relievers. He was not the reason the Nationals won game 2 and he has not had a good post season otherwise. They can apologize to Eaton all they want...I will take Giolito, Lopez and Dunning.
That is what I was thinking...at least Robin was a great player for the Sox. Ross is one of the most overrated hyped up players ever to play baseball in this town. He is like a mythical creature because of his playoff home run, etc. It is like if the Sox would have hired Geoff Blum to manage the team.
