Brief thoughts/notes. Austin Beck helium is real. McKay consensus is hitter over pitcher. Surprised to see Pratto this high. Ramos is an intriguing prep bat. I like Logan Warmoth and wonder if he could sneak into the top half of the 1st round.

Didn't watch it but that stat line doesn't scream out at me - thoughts?

Ha, he had a bad 4th inning but 1-3 was televised and he looked dominant. Stuff looks real good.

No Seth Beer?

Wrong draft.

He's not in this draft class. 2018. There really shouldn't be any Beer talk in here.

Can you help me? Why would Seth Beer not be part of this?

Because this is the 2017 draft discussion thread and he is eligible to be drafted next year. There's another thread for the 2018 draft.

I never knew that there were eligibility rules for American kids. I thought any HS Senior or College Kid of any year was eligible.

Found it. I never knew.

Players at four-year colleges and universities are eligible three years after first enrolling in such an institution, or after their 21st birthdays (whichever occurs first).

Junior and community college players are eligible to be drafted at any time.

I didn't know either until recently.

I keep forgetting to ask, but I propose we change that 2018 MLB Draft thread to Seth Beer thread with 2018 draft as the sub-headline. Then we can change it again in June to general 2018 Draft thread.

I'm curious about this guy from Puerto Rico.

And I wonder if Pratto is athletic enough to move to the OF

Brendan McKay is 100% going to be a pitcher at the next level. However, he still has a great bat that has Bumgarner potential at the plate. Brendan is the best college arm in this class. Yes I am biased because I know him, but I also know how hard he works every day and what kind of person he is. He is going to be special.

On a side note, I have also watched Jordan Adell a few times and I think he projects to be a corner OF. Ballard has him in center, but that wont stick IMO. As a Louisville student I wish he'd come (never in a million years) but as a life long Sox fan I would LOVE to see us draft him.

I can't believe that McKay would fall that far down to the White Sox. Getting him at 11 is a reach.

I don't believe he will either. I hope, but I think he'll be top 3 or 5.

No, I hope it's the best player available.

This. BPA always. Can trade pitching for bats later.

I agree with your premise, in that you should always take the BPA. However, I do not think you can just trade pitching for bats later. Hitters seem to be in higher demand these days than pitchers, mostly because of the injury risk.

Then how come all these position player prospects are off the table for Q?

Teams are just balking at Quintana. They landed Moncada in the Sale trade.

A guy who is intriguing to me (mostly because I favor advanced-feel college bats) is Pavin Smith, a left-handed first baseman out of Virginia. So far this year, he is batting .322 with a .390 OBP, .602 SLG with 10 HRs and only 3 Ks (that seems really low for a power hitter, but that was based on my last check of his stats off UVA’s athletic website). If that K number is correct, then he clearly is getting extremely unlucky hitting wise and you could presume that his batting average would steadily increase as the season goes along.

According to MLB Prospect Pipeline, he is the Number 14-ranked prospect in the Draft. Interestingly, he is rather athletic and while he is a “strong defender” at first base, he might be passable in the outfield.

Picking at 11, he might be there and I would be thrilled to have another advanced-feel college bat.
