You can get away with essentially two pitches if you vary speed, arm angles, location, etc.

Jose Contreras is the ultimate example, the run he was on in 2005/early 2006 with the forkball/split and 95-98 MPH fb.

Covey as well.  His fastball/slider combination is good enough 80-85% of the time (at least for right now), but he still has the change and curveball to throw that other 15%.  Of course, the main point with your secondary stuff is being able to get it over for strikes (or fool the hitter so much he expands outside of the zone)...and also that "pitching backwards" idea of getting ahead in counts early with offspeed stuff like Giolito did much more effectively last year.

  • Y'all are hilarious. A 22 year old has a month of bad-ish starts and everyone is like "I never liked him, why did we get him, Hahn got snookered."

We know he doesn't go by J-Rod.

  • Until he gets his command in order, keep him in AAA.  Proud of the Sox for being so patient with him

Tack on another wild pitch, and another walk. Yeesh. Just pull him at this point.

Kopech looks like a disaster. 6 walks and 2 HBP in 3 innings.

Kopech and Moncada going south at the same time...

ERA nearly at 5.  Escapes based loaded, 2 out situation, still gave up 3 runs.

4.91 ERA.   77 pitches to get through 3.

It would be abuse if he goes out for the 4th.

Cease might be passing Kopech...even though he's not Top 131 on the FG list.

We seem to need multiple sport psychologists for GIolito, Kopech/Fulmer and Anderson/Moncada.

Wake up, Grudz.

8 walks in 3+.  (But just two hits?)

5 ER, now at a not so sterling 5.20 ERA.   86 pitches to get just 9 outs.

they better not even think about bringing kopech up this year

Adolfo OPS under 800 but Basabe really picking it up again.

Looks like they're (still) bound and determined to protect Rutherford by giving him the best possible match-ups...

Kopech up to 5 BB’s in 2 IP tonight.

Laz Rivera is 2-4 so far on the way. Speaking of Kannapolis, did Luis Gonzalez get hurt? haven’t seen him in a box score in some time it seems

Gonzalez last played on 6/10 but I can’t anything about an injury

Unless you really want to plant seeds of doubt in the fanbase...he would absolutely be destroyed.  Maybe that's what he needs, a kick in the a--.  But we seem to have so many fragile psyches, how would he be able to handle that kind of adversity?  Would he simply fall apart?

Time to close the ole Charlotte box score.

Clearly Kopech needs to get back with Brielle.  He's closer to being a AA pitcher than major leaguer.  As for Grudz, he's a horrible manager.  Been saying that since last year when he would sit on his ass as his players were getting screwed over constantly by strike zones, etc.

83 thru 7 for Cease. Love how he's been limiting his pitches per inning of late

Getting people out without having to strike them out. He only has 2 K’s tonight.

Dunning hasn’t given up a hit through 3

Talk about a hot take...

Luis Robert not really pressing for a promotion to Winston Salem. Kid should be feasting on low a ball pitching.

Jose Rodriguez 3-4 with a 2B. This guy is looking legit... Somebody mentioned him yesterday in the minor league thread. Only 17 years old and plays SS.Hitting .413 in 11 games so far.

I mentioned him the first game because its rare a 17 year old bats 3rd even in the DSL.

Eloy in Charlotte a week from tonight, I would think.

Good catch man. I can't help but think of all the success the cubs have had with international prospects. Obviously this guy isn't a big signing like some of their guys, but he's balling. Those international signings are a crapshoot. Maybe we got the lucky side of the crapshoot

Cease went 8 innings. Threw 99 mph on pitch 101. Was getting a lot of swings and misses on his change up.

Great day for Cease.

So far, a great day for Eloy and Dunning

Should be interesting to read the comments after the game. Should be a good learning experience unless an injury is involved.

All hail Dane Dunning.

7 IP, 3 H, 0 ER, 9K.... Oh and most importantly 0 BBs
