March 11, 20197 yr Here's the deal: Now that the Sox can't get Machado, they need to use that money to get other quality free agents or else they risk losing much of their fan base. However, they don't seem interested in doing anything to improve the team free agent wise. The kicker is that Hahn, JR, and KW all give the impression that they are perfectly satisfied with the team as it is right now and don't see the need to do anything constructive.
March 11, 20197 yr Trying to use reason and logic to understand the Sox front office is a waste of time. They are clearly outmatched when it comes to free agency and trades. The Padres have both of the cornerstones that should be in Sox uniforms. Hahn should be embarrassed and go into hiding.

If 5 of them are simply "above average" combined with the FO's inability to acquire good talent in free agency, that 2021 team is an 82 win one.

At the same time, you have to give your young players time to develop, especially in a rebuild. You can't just give them one year at the MLB level and then write them off or pencil them in. If you do that, you're going to end up trading away stars and keeping bums because they looked good for their first season before the rest of the league caught up to them. You don't know what you have until a player has played at least 2.5 seasons in the bigs, and even sometimes that isn't enough. RE: Keuchel-Ask yourself if James Shields would have looked good in your uniform in March 2015. Then ask yourself the same question in August of 2016. You answered your own question. We're in Year 3 of the actual rebuild. The Process took 4 years before it showed dividends.

The Sixers were a bottom barrel team for like 5 years as a part of their "process". The Astros lost 100 plus games three seasons in a row! The Sox still have a few tank seasons left before this rebuild starts moving forward with any momentum. 2019 and 2020 should be all about letting the young kids develop and getting top 5 draft picks.

Except we don’t have Embiid or Simmons yet (unless it’s Robert, Jimenez and Cease). Fulmer can be Okafor and Moncada probably Markelle Fultz. Yolmer is the Sox version of Robert Covington with his Gatorade self-baths.

It takes at least 3 full seasons before I'll write a guy completely off. Of the 3 rebuild pieces that have reached the majors so far, none are lost causes. Fulmer is different. March 11, 20197 yr The White Sox were able to trade Sale,Q, and Eaton for what should have been king ransom hauls of prospects. To think they should be on the same timetable as a normal rebuild is just hoping against hope. My personal benchmark is 3 full seasons of suckage. March 11, 20197 yr It is a typical long one. It feels like forever because we never committed to the rebuild until a couple years ago. Spending money on aging vets does improve the current product but hurts your draft thus prolonging the rebuild. It would take us back to the late Kenny years of 70 some wins. IE limbo. Nothing is guaranteed so this may not work but we know limbo doesn't work. We should take this money and do everything we can to build up internationally and in our current minor leagues. Hell rival the Yankees under George where everything was "the best". Be so good structurally you become desirable as a location. It won't happen but I wish it would. Ive posted in the past on restructuring the minors from education, nutrition, sports science to coaching.

Like those you mentioned, they’ll all be a few seasons past their peak output and their contracts will be nearly underwater, which will limit further upgrades to some that look remarkably similar to what the Reds did to their pitching staff. And they’ll probably block a few prospects, too.
March 11, 20197 yr This rebuild has the KC blueprint all over it. It will heavily depend largely on the prospects all making an impact at the major league level. This is not a rebuild like the Cubs (referring to the Lester/Heyward signings). I don’t see the Sox adding impact talent via free agency. We’re going to get complementary players signed and talent via trade to fill holes.

This argument would make a lot of sense if you said top five instead of top ten, were completely unaware of the players’ ages, and didn’t realize that defense exists.
